Wall Hanging

Technically I am still working on the square dance quilt. I just need one more border but this one has a complicated design, and I worked on it all weekend in EQ (Electric Quilt 8 = quilt design software). And on Sunday night I was finally done, saved the project one last time and closed it. And when I opened it again I received the “unreadable polygon” error. All my work is just gone, and I have to start over. Yes, I did back up the file but this error message means that there was some kind of drawing error somewhere that the program can’t resolve when loading the project file, and everything that would be loaded after the drawing error is just gone forever and cannot be recovered. And what annoys me most is that this error has been around for a long time. Of course I contacted EQ Tech Support, and they are telling me they are trying to fix this but it is extremely difficult. Well, I have never personally encountered this error before but a quick search online shows posts from 2007 about wiped out projects with unreadable polygon. That’s 11 years! Sorry, but you can’t tell me that you can’t fix a major error that wipes out a whole project in more than a decade. It seems to me that this is just not important to them because it so rarely happens.

Anyway, sorry about the rant but I was really upset about losing all my work. I was planning on actually sewing the border this week but had to come up with a backup plan. I remembered the postcards I made for Quilt Canada, with the pansies and the snowdrops. Back then I thought it would be really nice to turn these into wall hangings. They are both lovely designs but I am sure no one wants to fiddle with dozen of very tiny pieces. I had already worked on the designs and “just” needed to actually make the samples. I started with the pansies and put the block together, it just needs stitching around the pieces. And I thought it would be more efficient to assemble the snowdrops as well and then sew both blocks at once. Guess what happened when I tried to open the snowdrops design file in EQ… yep, you are right, another “unreadable polygon” error. This one is not as bad as I still have the original postcard file and just need to resize and add the borders but still… I have been using EQ for 18 years without any issues, and now I lose two files in one week? If you read this far, thank you for listening to my rant, and if not, I don’t blame you but I needed to get it out of my system. I hope that you at least enjoy the pretty pansies, they will be available as a pattern as soon as I find the time.

Eigentlich arbeite ich immer noch an meinem Square Dance Quilt, es fehlt nur noch ein Rand, aber der ist ein bisschen komplizierter. Ich habe das ganze letzte Wochenende am Entwurf gearbeitet, und zwar in EQ (Electric Quilt 8 = Quilt Design Software). Am Sonntagabend war ich dann endlich fertig, speicherte ein letztes Mal und beendete das Programm. Und als ich die Datei dann wieder öffnen wollte, erhielt ich eine Fehlermeldung, die Datei wäre aufgrund eines „unreadable polygons“ nicht mehr zu lesen. Das bedeutet, dass all meine Arbeit umsonst war und ich wieder von vorn anfangen kann. Und ja, ich habe natürlich immer auch ein Backup gemacht und die Datei unter mehr als einem Namen gespeichert. Aber diese Fehlermeldung bedeutet, dass irgendwo ein kleiner Fehler in einer Zeichnung ist, den das Programm nicht laden kann, und alles, was danach zu laden wäre, wird auch nicht mehr geladen. Da der Fehler ja auch in den Backup-Dateien ist, helfen diese mir leider auch nicht weiter, es ist alles nicht mehr rekonstruierbar. Was mich aber am meisten ärgert, ist, dass dieser Fehler schon ewig existiert. Natürlich habe ich den EQ Tech Support kontaktiert, und sie haben mir versichert, sie arbeiten daran, aber es wäre nicht so einfach, eine Lösung zu finden. Mir selbst ist dieser Fehler vorher noch nie begegnet, aber eine Online-Suche findet Posts aus 2007, in denen es um genau diesen Fehler geht. Das ist 11 Jahre her! Es tut mir leid, aber ich kann nicht wirklich glauben, dass man es in über 10 Jahren nicht schafft, einen Fehler zu finden und zu beseitigen, der die komplette Datei unbrauchbar macht. Es dürfte wohl eher der Fall sein, dass das Problem für nicht so wichtig gehalten wird, da es ja nur relativ selten auftritt.

Ich entschuldige mich für diese Tirade, aber ich musste mir mal Luft machen. In dieser Woche wollte ich den letzten Rand eigentlich nähen, aber da mein Design sich ja nun in Luft aufgelöst hat, musste Plan B her. Mir fielen dann die Postkarten ein mit den Stiefmütterchen und den Schneeglöckchen, die ich im Frühjahr für Quilt Canada genäht hatte. Damals hatte ich beschlossen, die Motive zu vergrößern und als Wandbehänge zu gestalten, da sicher niemand Lust hat, sich mit all den kleinen Fitzelteilen abzugeben. An den Designs hatte ich schon gearbeitet, ich brauchte „nur“ noch die Musterstücke. Also legte ich mit den Stiefmütterchen los, aufgebügelt ist schon mal alles und muss nur noch umnäht werden. Dann wollte ich die Schneeglöckchen auch aufbügeln und dann beide Blöcke auf einmal umnähen. Und nun dürft Ihr raten, was passiert ist, als ich die EQ-Datei für die Schneeglöckchen öffnen wollte… genau, auch hier präsentierte sich mir wieder der „unreadable polygon“ Fehler. Ich habe zum Glück noch die Originaldatei von den Postkarten, so dass hier die Rekonstruktion relativ schnell gehen dürfte, aber ärgerlich ist es trotzdem. Ich benutze EQ seit 18 Jahren ohne Probleme, und jetzt verliere ich gleich zwei Dateien innerhalb von einer Woche? Wer bis hierher tatsächlich gelesen hat, dem danke ich für’s Zuhören, und wer schon lange aufgegeben hat, dem mache ich absolut keinen Vorwurf, aber ich musste das mal loswerden. Ich hoffe, dass zumindest die Stiefmütterchen gefallen, sie werden als Anleitung verfügbar sein, sobald ich die Zeit dafür finde.
