This wall hanging is one of my personal projects that I usually just post on my private sewing blog. But I quilted it on the longarm machine, and since it is so beautiful I decided to show it here as well. If you are a Canadian quilter, then you are probably aware of this pattern, and chances are you bought the kit yourself. It is very popular here, and rightfully so. It is a pattern by BC designer Shania Sunga, and I fell in love with it instantly. In my opinion it’s the most beautiful interpretation of the Canadian flag ever. Adding the Canada geese was just genius. For quilting, I free motion stitched around the edges of all the pieces, taking care of appliqué and quilting at the same time, and then decided that the piece didn’t need much more. I just added some texture and motion to the white background and maple leaves to the red panels.


Dieser Wandbehang ist eines meiner privaten Projekte, die ich normalerweise hier nicht poste, dafür habe ich meinen privaten Blog. Aber ich habe es auf Millie gequiltet, und es ist so schön und kanadisch, dass ich es hier doch zeigen möchte. Das Muster ist von der Designerin Shania Sunga aus British Columbia, und für mich war es Liebe auf den ersten Blick. Und das ging nicht nur mir so, das Muster war im letzten Jahr ein großer Hit, die Fertigpackungen gingen weg wie warme Semmeln. Kanada feiert in diesem Jahr seinen 150. Geburtstag, und dies ist die schönste Interpretation der kanadischen Flagge, die mir je begegnet ist. Gequiltet habe ich zunächst freihändig um die einzelnen Teile herum, Shania macht Applizieren und Quilten gern in einem Arbeitsgang, was mir auch ganz recht ist. Dann habe ich nur dem weißen Hintergrund ein bisschen Struktur gegeben und Ahornblätter in die roten Seitenteile gequiltet.

April Easter Egg

I can’t believe another month has come and gone and it’s already April. This means Easter is around the corner, so this month’s free pattern is an Easter egg. I know that Easter is not always in April but this year it is, so it will have to do. It was fun to work with spring colours although it wasn’t easy to find the right fabrics in my stash. Luckily I came across some hand-dyed fabrics from a while ago that were just the right tones. For quilting, I just stitched in the ditch around the blue/green/yellow decoration parts. The purple egg background is quilted in a continuous free motion flower design, and for the white background I tried free motion Easter eggs. I was quite surprised how well those turned out. PPP-023 April Easter Egg

Ich kann kaum glauben, dass schon wieder ein Monat vorbei ist und wir schon April haben. Das bedeutet, dass Ostern vor der Tür steht, daher gibt es diesmal ein Osterei zum Download. Ja, ich weiß, dass Ostern nicht immer im April ist, aber in diesem Jahr ist das so, und das ist gut genug für mich. Es war sehr schön, zur Abwechslung mal mit frischen Frühlingsfarben zu arbeiten, obwohl es nicht ganz einfach war, die richtigen Farbtöne zu finden. Zum Glück bin ich dann auf ein paar gut abgelagerte selbstgefärbte Stoffe in den richtigen Farben gestoßen. Gequiltet habe ich im Nahtschatten um die blauen, gelben und grünen Quadrate herum (das sollen die Dekorationen auf dem Osterei sein). Der lila Ei-Hintergrund erhielt ein Free Motion Blümchenmuster, und für den weißen Hintergrund habe ich mich an Free Motion Ostereiern versucht. Ich war selbst ganz überrascht, wie gut das geklappt hat.

Free Pattern: Tulip Time

I am so ready for spring. I live in a part of Canada that usually doesn’t get much snow but this winter has just been crazy. It is finally getting a little warmer, and we had a couple of days of sunshine. I have to admit that I don’t care much for gardening. But give me a quilt pattern with flowers, and I am all for it. For today I found an adorable little wall hanging with tulips and pinwheels. It is just the right project to get into spring mood. “Tulip Time” was designed by Paintbrush Studio, a division of Fabri-Quilt, and posted on their blog “Inspired by Fabric”.

Meinetwegen darf der Frühling jetzt gern kommen. Wir sind hier ja in einem Teil von Kanada, der nur selten Schnee sieht, aber dieser Winter war ziemlich verrückt. Jetzt wird es aber langsam wärmer, und wir hatten sogar ein paar Sonnentage. Mit Gartenarbeit habe ich es ja nicht so, das gebe ich gern zu, aber Blumen nähen, das mache ich doch immer gern. Und daher gibt es heute ein freies Muster für einen Wandbehang mit Blumen und Pinwheels (auf English und in Inch, aber reichlich bebildert). Es ist genau das richtige Projekt, um in Frühlingsstimmung zu kommen. “Tulip Time” wurde entworfen von Paintbrush Studio, einer Abteilung von Fabri-Quilt, und auf dem Blog “Inspired by Fabric” veröffentlicht.

Free Pattern

Free Pattern: Coffee and Cream

Today’s free pattern uses a neutral colour palette similar to Darlene’s “Chip Off The Old Block” quilt. While I associated it with chocolate and caramel, others apparently think of coffee and cream. I won’t deny that I love chocolate more than I love coffee, especially since I have been a tea drinker all my life. But no matter what you associate with browns and tans, this easy project alternates Shoo Fly and Snowball blocks and leaves lots of room for quilting. And did I mention that it also offers a chance to use up some scraps? Instructions were published on allpeoplequilt.com, and they are free to view online, you only need an account when you want to download the instruction file.

Coffee and Cream

Für heute habe ich ein freies Muster gefunden, das eine neutrale Farbpalette verwendet, die mich an Darlenes “Chip Off The Old Block” Quilt erinnert. Während ich an Schokolade und Karamell denken musste, fällt anderen dazu Kaffee mit Sahne ein. Ich persönlich mag Schokolade deutlich lieber als Kaffee, zumal ich schon immer Teetrinkerin war. Aber egal, ob Schokolade oder Kaffee, der Wandbehang verbindet Shoo Fly und Snowball Blöcke miteinander und bietet jede Menge Platz zum Quilten. Und zumindest für einige Teile kann man auch wieder Reste verwenden. Die Anleitung (auf Englisch und in Inch) gibt es bei allpeoplequilt.com, sie ist online kostenlos verfügbar. March Shamrock

It took me a while to realize that a pattern for March was actually not that difficult with St. Patrick’s Day coming up. Once I had that idea drafting the pattern was easy. I just didn’t have time to make a sample but in a mad rush finished everything yesterday. I put a hint of an Irish Chain into the corners of the wall hanging and quilted the background in diagonal lines. Scroll down for the link to the free download. Now on to April’s pattern, I am determined to finish a little earlier next month.


Es hat eine ganze Weile gedauert, bis ich die zündende Idee für März hatte. Dabei war das eigentlich gar nicht so schwierig. Aber St. Patrick’s Day ist in Deutschland ja im Gegensatz zu Nordamerika keine große Sache, daher hatte ich das zuerst gar nicht auf der Rechnung. Das Pattern selbst war dann kein Problem mehr, ich hatte bloß keine Zeit zum Nähen und habe dann gestern einen flotten Endspurt hingelegt und alles gerade noch rechtzeitig beendet. In den Ecken findet sich die Andeutung einer Irish Chain, daher habe ich den Hintergrund in diagonalen Linien gequiltet. Wie immer steht die Anleitung zum Download zur Verfügung. Und ich werde gleich anfangen, mir Gedanken über das Pattern für April zu machen, noch so eine Last Minute Punktlandung möchte ich lieber vermeiden.

Free Pattern: Star Burst

I love bright colours, and it will probably not come as a surprise that I love batiks too. As pretty as printed fabrics can be, batiks are often more versatile as they put less emphasis on the pattern than the colour. “Star Burst” is a wall hanging designed by Kimberly Einmo, and her choice of bright batiks caught my eye right away. The centre star looks more complicated than it actually is, and four patches and flying geese complete the charming design.

Ich bevorzuge ja meist kräftige, knallige Farben, und daher dürfte es auch nicht weiter überraschend sein, dass ich Batikstoffe besonders gern habe. Druckstoffe sind auch schön, aber bei Batikstoffen liegt die Betonung meist mehr auf dem Farbton als auf dem Muster, und daher lassen sie sich (zumindest für meine Zwecke) universeller einsetzen. “Star Burst” ist ein Wandbehang, den Kimberly Einmo entworfen hat, und die knalligen Batikstoffe, die sie verwendet hat, sind mir sofort ins Auge gesprungen. Das Sternenmotiv in der Mitte sieht schwieriger aus als es ist, und Four Patch Blöcke und Flying Geese geben dem Design den richtigen Rahmen.

February Heart

Wow, it’s February already! Time to replace January’s Snowman! February means Valentine’s Day, so I played around with hearts and flower designs. But there is only so much you can do with 2″ squares and limited space, and I quickly abandoned any complicated ideas about roses and such. I ended up with a basic heart in red and pink on a tan background. Sometimes less is more, and in this case I agree. I enjoyed playing with all my pretty pink and red scraps, and I had fun quilting. I love free motion feathers as a background filler, they are much more satisfying than just meandering. I hope you enjoy this little pattern too, once again it is available for free download. Now keep your fingers crossed that I can come up with something for March!

PPP-021 February Heart

Und schon ist es Februar! Und es wird Zeit, den Januar Schneemann von der Wand zu nehmen. Februar bedeutet Valentinstag, und daher habe ich mit Herzen und Blumen herumgespielt. Aber mit 5 cm großen Quadraten und begrenztem Platz kann man der Phantasie nicht wirklich freien Lauf lassen, und ich habe ziemlich schnell meine komplizierten Ideen von Rosen und ähnlichen Dingen verworfen. Herausgekommen ist nun ein recht einfaches Herz in rot und pink auf beigem Hintergrund. Manchmal ist weniger eben doch mehr, und in diesem Fall war das so. Ich hatte viel Spaß, mit all den schönen Resten in pink und rot herumzuspielen, und auch mit dem Quilten bin ich zufrieden. Ich liebe Free Motion Feathers als Füllmuster für den Hintergrund, das sieht viel schöner aus als nur Meandering. Das Muster steht wieder als freier Download zur Verfügung. Und jetzt bitte die Daumen drücken, dass mir auch für März etwas einfällt.

Block/Pattern of the Month

January Snowman

Hello, 2017! Happy New Year! I am sure you are all determined to finish your UFO’s this year and not start any new projects until you do so… right? I have a few projects that I need to finish but I am still pretty good in the UFO department. And a new small project here and there doesn’t hurt. Remember the Dancing Garland wall hanging I made before Christmas? I have just the right wall spot for it, it covers up some weird little nook in our hallway, I have no idea what that is for. So now that Christmas is over I thought it would be nice to have a different wall hanging there. And I also liked that I could use all my 2″ scraps for this project. I wondered if I could come up with a design for January that would also use 2″ squares and ended up with this funny snowman. I called it “January Snowman”, hoping I will be able to come up with a design for every month this year. I already have an idea for February but after that… who knows. I have uploaded the pattern and made it available for free download. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Frohes Neues Jahr 2017! Ich bin mir sicher, dass alle meine Leser fest entschlossen sind, in diesem Jahr ihre UFOs abzuarbeiten und keine neuen Projekte zu starten, bevor nicht alles fertig ist, oder? Ich habe zwar auch eine Handvoll Projekte, die noch nicht vollendet sind, aber nach wie vor habe ich kaum UFOS. Und ab und zu ein neues kleines Projekt kann ja auch nicht schaden. Vor Weihnachten hatte ich ja den Dancing Garland Wandbehang genäht. Und für diesen hat sich auch gleich der richtige Platz an der Wand gefunden. Im Flur haben wir so eine seltsame winzige Nische, mit der wusste ich nichts anzufangen, und die wird von dem Wandbehang wunderbar verdeckt. Nachdem Weihnachten nun vorbei ist und mir auch gut gefallen hat, dass ich für das Projekt meine Reste verwenden konnte, überlegte ich, ob mir nicht für Januar ein anderes Design einfallen würde, das sich ebenfalls aus 2″ Quadraten herstellen lässt. Dabei kam dieser lustige Schneemann heraus. Ich habe ihn großspurig “Januar Schneemann” genannt und hoffe, dass mir für jeden Monat des Jahres ein Design einfallen wird. Für Februar habe ich schon eine Idee, aber danach… wir werden sehen. Die Anleitung steht als kostenloser Download zur Verfügung. Ich hoffe, der fröhliche Schneemann gefällt Euch auch so gut wie mir.

Free Pattern: Dancing Garland

I can’t believe it’s been a week since I posted here. Time sure is flying by, and I have been quilting up a storm. I had no time left to edit my patterns, and I haven’t sorted the pictures I took either. I managed to get through most of my work load but there are still people calling to see if they can get their projects finished before Christmas, so I am sure there is more quilting to do in the near future. But for today I found the cutest little Christmas wall hanging. It is small and not difficult to make and it uses scraps. It’s all squares and half square triangles. Be sure to check out the original picture as my little drawing doesn’t do it justice.

Ich kann gar nicht glauben, dass schon wieder eine Woche vergangen ist. Die Zeit rennt wirklich, und ich habe wie verrückt gequiltet. Ich hatte keine Zeit, weiter an meinen Patterns zu arbeiten, und ich habe auch die ganzen Photos noch nicht sortiert, die ich gemacht habe. Im Moment habe ich wieder ein bisschen Luft, da ich die meisten Auftragsarbeiten abgearbeitet habe, aber ich bekomme immer noch Anrufe von Leuten, die ihre Projekte gern noch vor Weihnachten gequiltet haben möchten, so dass ich mich noch nicht entspannt zurücklehnen kann. Aber zumindest habe ich für heute noch ein hübsches Projekt gefunden, einen weihnachtlichen Wandbehang. Er ist klein und nicht kompliziert und lässt sich leicht aus Resten herstellen. Es werden nur Quadrate und Half Square Triangles verwendet. Meine Zeichnung wird dem Original nicht wirklich gerecht, ein Blick auf das Photo lohnt sich.
