Free Pattern

Today’s free pattern has been around for a while, it was published in a quilting magazine in 2000 and is now available online. There wasn’t much information given about the designer, it just says “inspired by quilt design of Sandy Bonsib”. A quick online search pointed me to Sandy’s website, and it turned out that she isn’t far from me… she can be found at Pike Place Market in Seattle several times a week. But I digress… I liked the pattern right away although personally I would probably choose different colours. For my drawing I stayed with the muted colours of the original design, and it looks quite good. A wonderful quilt that would also look great in a different colourway.

Das freie Muster, das ich für heute gefunden habe, wurde bereits im Jahre 2000 in einer Zeitschrift veröffentlicht und ist jetzt online verfügbar. Leider sind die Informationen über die Designerin etwas spärlich, es wird nur lapidar erwähnt, dass das Muster auf einem Design von Sandy Bonsib beruht. Durch eine Online-Suche fand ich schnell Sandys Website und entdeckte, dass sie gar nicht weit entfernt von mir tätig ist, man kann sie am Pike Place Market in Seattle finden. Aber ich schweife ab… das Muster hat mir gleich gut gefallen, obwohl ich persönlich vermutlich andere Farben wählen würde. Für meine Zeichnung habe ich aber versucht, bei den Originalfarben zu bleiben, und ich finde es gar nicht mal schlecht. Ein schönes Muster, das sicher in vielen Farbvarianten gut aussieht.

“Geese Migration” is a free pattern designed by Cynthia Brunz of Quilting is more fun than Housework (great name by the way). Cynthia combined squares and flying geese to an unusual block that I find quite interesting. And I also like her use of colour and value. The quilt is not that difficult to make, it looks worse than it actually is, and the result is just stunning. The pattern can also be used for a scrappy quilt but as much as I like using up scraps, I think this particular pattern looks better the way Cynthia designed it.

Cynthia hat Quadrate mit Flying Geese kombiniert, und dabei kam dieser ungewöhnliche Block heraus, den ich sehr interessant finde. Sehr gelungen finde ich auch, wie sie für ihr Layout mit Farben gespielt hat. Der Quilt ist nicht wirklich schwierig zu nähen, es sieht schlimmer aus, als es ist. Das Muster eignet sich auch zur Resteverwertung, aber in diesem speziellen Fall denke ich, dass der Quilt besser wirkt, wenn die Farben mit Methode plaziert werden, wie es die Designerin vorgemacht hat.

Here is another scrappy quilt that I would really like to make. “Film At Five” was created by Deanna of “Wedding Dress Blue”, and it uses 2 1/2″ squares. When I am done with my 2″ projects, I can move on to the next size and empty that drawer. Be sure to check out Deanna’s tutorial and scroll all the way down. This project has been around for a while, and Deanna has updated the post with pictures that quilters around the world sent to her of their finished projects. Many of them are scrappy but some quilters limited their fabric choices to just a few colours with stunning results.

Hier ist ein weiterer Scrap Quilt von meiner To-Do-Liste: “Film At Five”, entworfen von Deanna/Wedding Dress Blue. Sie hat 2 1/2″ Quadrate verwendet, und das kommt mir sehr entgegen. Wenn ich mit meinen 2″ Projekten fertig bin, kann ich zur nächsten Größe wechseln und eine weitere Schublade leeren. Deannas Tutorial (auf Englisch mit vielen Bildern) ist auch deshalb sehenswert, weil sie am Ende des Posts Bilder eingefügt hat von fertigen Projekten, die ihr Quilter aus aller Welt geschickt haben. Sie hat das Tutorial schon vor mehreren Jahren gepostet, so dass sie zwischenzeitlich jede Menge Feedback bekommen hat. Und wer keine Scrap Quilts mag, findet dort auch Anregungen, wie man das Muster mit weniger Farben nähen kann.

Here is another scrappy quilt pattern to use up all those leftovers that keep piling up. Amber Johnson of Gigi’s Thimble wrote a tutorial with lots of pictures. Her version uses only red, blue and aqua but it works equally well with scraps of all colours. For the centres you will need 2″ squares, and the half-square triangles for the star points use 4 1/2″ squares. Or you could also change the pattern a little and make a four patch from 3 1/2″ squares for the centre of the star… that’s what I would have to do since I am *really* running low on 2″ squares after all my scrappy projects this year. It is a very versatile pattern, so be sure to check it out.

Hier ist ein weiteres Tutorial für einen Scrap Quilt, um all die Reste zu verwenden, die sich immer ansammeln. Amber Johnson/Gigi’s Thimble hat die Anleitung geschrieben, auf Englisch, aber mit vielen Bildern. Für ihre Version hat sie nur rot, blau und türkis verwendet, aber das Muster eignet sich wunderbar für Reste in allen Farben. Für die Mitte werden 2″ Quadrate verwendet, die Dreiecke für die Sternenspitzen entstehen aus 4 1/2″ Quadraten. Oder man könnte auch aus vier 3 1/2″ Quadraten ein Four Patch für die Mitte nähen, das würde ich vermutlich tun, da ich mittlerweile kaum mehr 2″ Quadrate herumliegen habe, nach all der Resteverwertung in diesem Jahr. Es ist ein vielseitig verwendbares Muster, Abspeichern lohnt sich.

Jodi Nelson made this sweet little baby quilt and wrote a tutorial for Moda Bake Shop. She used a charm pack to make her pinwheels but of course using up leftovers from your stash works equally well. Jodi came up with a very creative detail that makes this quilt special: she added Prairie Points to an inner border. Prairie Points, in case you are not familiar with the term, are folded fabric triangles that are usually added to the outer border of a quilt instead of traditional binding. But of course they can go anywhere on a quilt, as Jodi’s Pinwheel Baby Quilt shows.

Dieser süße Babyquilt wurde von Jodi Nelson genäht, und die Anleitung gibt es als Tutorial beim Moda Bake Shop (auf Englisch, aber gut bebildert). Sie hat für die Blöcke ein Charm Pack verwendet, aber wie immer lassen sich natürlich auch eigene Reste dafür gut verarbeiten. Jodi hat das einfache Muster mit einem sehr kreativen Detail aufgepeppt, indem sie Prairie Points in einem inneren Rand verarbeitet hat. Wer mit Prairie Points nicht vertraut ist, das sind gefaltete Dreiecke aus Stoff, die sonst eher außen herum einen Quilt verschönern, anstelle eines traditionellen Bindings. Aber wie Jodi hier zeigt, können Prairie Points selbstverständlich überall in einem Quilt verwendet werden.

If you are looking for an easy pattern to showcase a pretty large scale print, then Shelby Morris’s “Spring Splash” might be a good choice. It only uses two fabrics (well, three if you include the binding), and the centre star block is 24″. The nine patch blocks in the border are strip-pieced, so the quilt should come together fairly quickly. I am thinking it would also look good in batiks with a dark background, that would really make the colours pop.

Wer auf der Suche ist nach einem Muster, das sich für großgemusterte Stoffe eignet, der könnte mit Shelby Morris’ “Spring Splash” fündig werden. Für diesen Quilt werden nur zwei Stoffe benötigt (okay, drei, wenn man das Binding mitzählt), und der Mittelblock hat mit 24″ eine schöne Größe. Die Nine Patches im Rand werden mit der Strip-Piecing-Methode genäht, so dass dies ein relativ schnelles Projekt sein dürfte. Ich denke, das würde auch gut mit Batikstoffen und schwarzem Hintergrund aussehen, da leuchten die Farben sicher schön.

This quilt by Sedef Imer of Down Grapevine Lane measures only 9″ x 12″ but the interesting design caught my eye right away. Sedef wrote the instructions for Caroline Fairbanks-Critchfield’s Monthly Mini Quilts series on SewCanShe. Sedef’s version uses soft, delicate colours and fabrics while Caroline used bright and bold solids for her mini quilt. I love how she used the areas left and right of the bolt to try out different quilting designs. Be sure to check out her other Monthly Minis.

Dieser Quilt von Sedef Imer/Down Grapevine Lane misst nur 9″ x 12″ (ca. 23 cm x 30.5 cm), aber das interessante Design ist mir sofort aufgefallen. Sie hat die Anleitung für die Monthly Mini Quilts von Caroline Fairbanks-Critchfield auf ihrer Website SewCanShe geschrieben. Sedefs Mini Quilt ist in zarten Frühlingsfarben gehalten, während Caroline für ihre Version zu kräftigen Uni-Stoffen gegriffen hat. Besonders gut gefällt mir, wie sie die einzelnen Teile rechts und links vom Blitz in der Mitte genutzt hat, um verschiedene Quiltmuster auszuprobieren. Es lohnt sich auch, einen Blick auf die anderen Monthly Minis zu werfen.
