It is August already, and we are melting in the heat. To help you cool off, here is an ice cream cone for this month’s 2″ scraps project. And the quilting was the easiest part, I didn’t have to think much about the ice cream cones that fill the background, they just popped into my head, and I knew how to quilt them in a continuous design. Another great practice project!
Nun haben wir schon August, und wir schmelzen hier seit Wochen vor Hitze. Aus Deutschland höre ich nur Klagen über den vielen Regen… wir tauschen gern ein bisschen Regen gegen ein paar Hitzegrade! Aber Eis schmeckt ja auch bei Regen, und in diesem Monat gibt es als 5cm-Reste-Projekt eine Eiswaffel. Den Hintergrund habe ich auch mit Eiswaffeln gequiltet, und da musste ich gar nicht lange drüber nachdenken, ich wusste sofort, wie ich das ohne Abzusetzen quilten kann. Das sind gute Übungsprojekte.

Yes, you read correctly, your rotary cutting mat likes moisture. I didn’t know that either for the longest time, and when I first read about giving a cutting mat a cold bath I thought it was a joke. But then I decided it couldn’t hurt to try it, and I liked the result. Soak the mat in a tub with COLD water and vinegar for a while and clean with dish soap and a soft brush afterwards. Leave flat to dry. I have been doing it maybe twice a year, and I think it really makes a difference. Nein, das ist kein Scherz, Rollschneidematten mögen ab und zu ganz gern eine Feuchtigkeitskur. Ich wusste das lange Jahre auch nicht, und als ich das zum ersten Mal gelesen habe, dachte ich, das könne unmöglich ernst gemeint sein. Aber dann habe ich es probiert, und das Ergebnis hat mich überzeugt. Einfach die Matte in KALTEM Wasser mit einem Schuss Essig einweichen, dann mit Geschirrspülmittel und einer weichen Bürste reinigen und trockentupfen oder flach trocknen lassen. Ich mache das vielleicht zweimal im Jahr, und ich finde, man merkt den Unterschied deutlich. This adorable quilt called the “Splendid Sampler” was made by Lynne. It has a little bit of everything – piecing, appliqué, hexagons, embroidery. I took lots of pictures of all the cute blocks and had a hard time deciding which ones to post, so there will be quite a few today. The pantograph Lynne chose for her project is called “Fleur de Swirl”.
Dieser Quilt heißt “Splendid Sampler” und wurde von Lynne genäht. Es ist von allem etwas dabei – Patchwork, Applikationen, Hexagons, Stickerei. Ich habe jede Menge Bilder von den Blöcken gemacht, und es fiel mir sehr schwer zu entscheiden, welche ich hier posten soll, daher gibt es heute noch mehr Bilder als sonst. Das Pantograph Muster, das Lynne für ihren Quilt gewählt hat, heißt “Fleur de Swirl”.
Yes, I know, I am late… I am very late. The show in Langley was a month ago. But I didn’t have time to look through all the pictures before, so better late than never. There were lots of wonderful quilts, and I came home with many ideas. The challenge theme was to create a small wall hanging picturing what Canada means to the quilter. One of the entries showed a Mountie playing hockey, and while we were looking at it, the real officer who had been the model for the quilt, showed up and let us take his picture with the quilt. Great fun!
Ja, ich weiß, ich bin spät dran… sehr spät sogar, denn die Quilt Show in Langley ist schon wieder einen Monat her. Aber ich hatte einfach keine Zeit, mich durch die ganzen Photos zu wühlen, daher zeige ich sie heute erst. Besser spät als nie. Es gab jede Menge tolle Quilts zu sehen, und ich habe viele Anregungen mitgenommen. Es gab auch eine Challenge, und passend zu Kanadas 150. Geburtstag in diesem Jahr sollte auf einem kleinen Wandbehang dargestellt werden, welche Bedeutung Kanada für die Quilterin hat. Auf einem Wandbehang war ein hockeyspielender Mountie dargestellt (Mountie ist eine umgangssprachliche Bezeichnung für einen kanadischen Polizisten; die Polizei heißt hier RCMP, das steht für Royal Canadian Mounted Police), und als wir uns diesen gerade ansahen, tauchte plötzlich der Polizist auf, der dafür Modell gestanden hatte, und ließ sich von uns mit dem Wandbehang photographieren.
Today’s free pattern has been around for a while, it was published in a quilting magazine in 2000 and is now available online. There wasn’t much information given about the designer, it just says “inspired by quilt design of Sandy Bonsib”. A quick online search pointed me to Sandy’s website, and it turned out that she isn’t far from me… she can be found at Pike Place Market in Seattle several times a week. But I digress… I liked the pattern right away although personally I would probably choose different colours. For my drawing I stayed with the muted colours of the original design, and it looks quite good. A wonderful quilt that would also look great in a different colourway.
Das freie Muster, das ich für heute gefunden habe, wurde bereits im Jahre 2000 in einer Zeitschrift veröffentlicht und ist jetzt online verfügbar. Leider sind die Informationen über die Designerin etwas spärlich, es wird nur lapidar erwähnt, dass das Muster auf einem Design von Sandy Bonsib beruht. Durch eine Online-Suche fand ich schnellSandys Website und entdeckte, dass sie gar nicht weit entfernt von mir tätig ist, man kann sie am Pike Place Market in Seattle finden. Aber ich schweife ab… das Muster hat mir gleich gut gefallen, obwohl ich persönlich vermutlich andere Farben wählen würde. Für meine Zeichnung habe ich aber versucht, bei den Originalfarben zu bleiben, und ich finde es gar nicht mal schlecht. Ein schönes Muster, das sicher in vielen Farbvarianten gut aussieht.
Doris made this quilt top using 1930s reproduction fabrics about five years ago. She used to own a longarm machine and was a little reluctant to have somebody else quilt for her. I am glad she decided to trust me, and together we came up with the custom design for this quilt. She wants to quilt the borders herself by hand, so I only basted those areas for her. I am not particularly drawn to 1930s fabrics but I thought the one with the little black dogs was just adorable. And the back is amazing as well, Doris used all the leftover fabrics and blocks to piece the backing which makes this a reversible quilt. A wonderful project, and I can’t wait to see it when Doris is done with the borders.
Dieses Quilttop aus 1930s Reproduction Fabrics hat Doris schon vor fünf Jahren genäht. Sie hat selbst einmal eine Longarmmaschine besessen und konnte sich nicht so recht überwinden, den Quilt von einer anderen Person quilten zu lassen. Ich freue mich, dass sie sich letztendlich entschlossen hat, mir ihr Werk anzuvertrauen, und gemeinsam haben wir dann das Quiltmuster entwickelt. Die Ränder möchte sie selbst mit der Hand quilten, daher habe ich diese nur geheftet. 30er Jahre Stoffe sind nicht unbedingt nach meinem Geschmack, aber der mit den kleinen schwarzen Hunden ist einfach nur knuffig. Für die Rückseite hat Doris übrigens alle Stoffreste und überzähligen Blöcke verwendet, somit hat der Quilt jetzt eigentlich zwei Vorderseiten. Ein ganz tolles Projekt, und ich freue mich schon darauf, das Endergebnis zu sehen, wenn Doris die Ränder gequiltet hat.
I am back but not up and running again… Windows Updates decided to crash my computer this weekend. I am quite diligent about backups, so I haven’t lost much data but it takes some time to reinstall all the programs. So for today here is a little gallery of pictures from our road trip to BC and Alberta National Parks. We were quite lucky with the weather and the fires, there was some smoke along the way but mostly it was okay. Beautiful scenery, and I especially liked the less crowded parks of Yoho and Kootenay.

Ich bin wieder da, aber noch ist alles etwas chaotisch… Windows Updates haben mir am Wochenende meinen Computer zerschossen. Zum Glück nehme ich das Sichern der Daten sehr genau, so dass ich kaum etwas verloren habe, aber es dauert, bis alles wieder installiert ist. Daher gibt es heute ein paar Bilder von unserem Road Trip in die Nationalparks von British Columbia und Alberta. Wir hatten Glück mit dem Wetter und auch mit dem Rauch, in großen Teilen BCs wüten zur Zeit heftige Waldbrände. Manchmal war es recht dunstig, aber größtenteils war es okay. Die Landschaft hier ist sehr sehenswert, und am besten haben mir die weniger bekannten und daher nicht so überlaufenen Parks Yoho und Kootenay gefallen.

Mary made this quilt as a graduation gift for her granddaughter. The pattern is called “Just Can’t Cut It” and was designed to be used with large scale prints that are just too pretty to cut into small pieces. Mary chose the pantograph “Wandering Daisies” to finish her project. For the back she used Fireside which is always great to work with and it shows the quilting nicely.
Diesen Quilt hat Mary für ihre Enkelin genäht, als Geschenk zum Schulabschluss. Das Muster heißt “Just Can’t Cut It” und ist besonders geeignet für großgemusterte Stoffe, die zum Zerschneiden fast zu schade sind. Als Quiltmuster hat Mary “Wandering Daisies” ausgewählt, und für die Rückseite gab es leuchtenden Fireside. Der verarbeitet sich immer sehr gut und zeigt das Quiltmuster dann besonders schön.
Und das war der vorerst letzte Post für etwa zehn Tage, wir sehen uns Mitte Juli wieder.

This beautiful quilt top was made by Pattie, I love the soft, feminine colours. Pattie was looking for a floral design, and we chose “Daisy Duo” for her project. I am always happy when customers choose a thread colour that doesn’t completely blend with the background and was delighted when Pattie went for “Willow”, a lovely light green, instead of cream or another neutral colour. It goes well with all the fabrics but makes the quilting stand out a little more.
Dieses hübsche Quilt Top hat Pattie genäht, die hellen Pastelltöne gefallen mir sehr gut. Als Quiltmuster wünschte Pattie sich etwas mit Blumen, und wir haben “Daisy Duo” für ihr Projekt gewählt. Ich freue mich immer, wenn sich eine Kundin für eine Garnfarbe entscheidet, die nicht im Hintergrund untergeht, und Pattie wählte “Willow”, ein helles, frühlingshaftes Grün aus, das wunderbar zu ihren Stoffen passt und das Quiltmuster ein bisschen mehr betont als eine neutrale Farbe.
And there I thought July would be easy. July 1 is Canada Day after all, so my first idea was a maple leaf. But then again, does the world really need another maple leaf quilt? And it would have been all red and white, and I couldn’t figure out how to make one big maple leaf look exciting. It took me a long time to come up with another idea but I finally put a cupcake together for Canada’s birthday, rainbow sprinkles and all. And I added the maple leaf as a decoration but it can easily be left out or replaced by another nine patch block since not everybody celebrates Canada Day. For quilting I tried to add texture to the cupcake and filled the background with cupcakes and meandering. The quilted cupcakes are my own design too, it’s amazing what happens when I just start to doodle. Happy Canada Day!
Eigentlich hatte ich gedacht, dass der Wandbehang für Juli einfach sein würde. Am 1. Juli ist Canada Day, der kanadische Nationalfeiertag, da lag es also nahe, ein Ahornblatt zu nähen. Aber dann fragte ich mich, ob die Welt wirklich noch einen Ahornblatt-Quilt braucht, und einen weiteren rot-weißen Quilt wollte ich eigentlich auch nicht nähen. Und da es mir nicht gelangt, das Ahornblatt irgendwie ansprechend aussehen zu lassen, habe ich den Gedanken dann verworfen. Aber die Inspiration wollte nicht wirklich kommen, und es hat ewig gedauert, bis schließlich ein Cupcake zu Kanadas Geburtstag entstand, einschließlich bunter Zuckerstreusel. Ein Ahornblatt habe ich als Dekoration trotzdem hinzugefügt, aber das kann man auch einfach weglassen oder durch einen anderen Nine-Patch-Block ersetzen, da ja nun nicht jeder Canada Day feiert. Beim Quilten habe ich dem Cupcake Struktur gegeben und dann im Hintergrund Cupcakes gequiltet und mit Stippling miteinander verbunden. Das Cupcake-Quiltmuster ist auch meinem Gehirn entsprungen, manchmal wundert es mich selbst, was da so alles rauskommt. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Kanada, zum 150. Geburtstag!
