Happy dance, my new pattern is finally ready and has been released. And I have also quilted the “Gems & Daisies” top in the meantime and will make an effort to edit the pattern quickly. “Under The Stars” features the traditional Friendship Star block in cheerful, bright colours. The quilt has no appliqué and only fairly easy piecing but I have decided to label it as intermediate anyway. The pieced borders require very accurate piecing to make everything fit which makes this project not suitable for beginners. The pattern will be available with a discount until April 20, 2018, enter the code STARS during checkout for 20% off.
Pünktlich zum Wochenende habe ich es gerade noch geschafft, die neue Anleitung zu veröffentlichen. Und das “Gänseblümchen” Top habe ich in der Zwischenzeit auch schon gequiltet und gebe mir Mühe, die Anleitung so schnell wie möglich zu überarbeiten. “Sternenhimmel” ist ein Baby-/Kinderquilt mit dem traditionellen Friendship Star Block in bunten, fröhlichen Farben. Der Quilt enthält keine Applikationen, und die Blöcke sind auch recht einfach zu nähen. Ich habe ihn trotzdem als “mittelschwer” eingestuft, da die gepatchten Ränder sehr exaktes Nähen verlangen, ansonsten passt es am Schluss nicht aneinander. I am sure that all of you know about the tragic accident that happened last week when the team bus of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team was in a collision with a semi-truck trailer in rural Saskatchewan. The local quilters in Humboldt will be making quilts for the victims/their families and would also like to provide all the first responders, RCMP etc., with a quilt. They think they will need approx. 200 quilts and are asking for help to make all the blocks. They have chosen a very simple block called “Take Five” in the team colours of the Humboldt Broncos. They are quick and easy to make, it took me maybe fifteen minutes to choose the fabrics, cut and sew. If anyone would like to contribute a block or two, more information can be found on the website of theSaskatoon Modern Quilt Guild.
Wie Ihr vermutlich alle aus den Nachrichten wisst, hat sich am letzten Freitag in Saskatchewan ein schrecklicher Unfall ereignet, bei dem der Teambus des Junior Hockey Teams Humboldt Broncos mit einem Lastwagen zusammengestoßen ist. Die Quiltgilde in Humboldt hat jetzt beschlossen für alle Opfer bzw. deren Familien Quilts zu nähen, und sie möchten auch gern allen anderen Beteiligten einen Quilt zukommen lassen, z.B. den Ersthelfern, der Polizei usw. Quilt Canada is coming to Vancouver this year in late May/early June, and one of the projects for this show is the Quilted Postcard Challenge. The theme is “Inspired by Nature”. The postcards will be displayed at the show and are available for purchase by donation. All proceeds will go to the BC Children’s Hospital. I dug up two of my old designs, I just didn’t have time to come up with something new, and made two postcards with flowers, one with pansies and one with snowdrops. Ende Mai/Anfang Juni diesen Jahres findet Quilt Canada in Vancouver statt. Das ist die jährliche Show der Canadian Quilters’ Association. Eines der Projekte für die Show ist eine “Quilted Postcard Challenge” zum Thema “Inspired by Nature”, also “Von der Natur inspiriert”, an der auch Nicht-Mitglieder teilnehmen dürfen. Die Karten werden dort ausgestellt und können gegen eine Spende erworben werden. Die Einnahmen werden dann an das BC Children’s Hospital weitergeleitet. Am Wochenende habe ich mich ans Werk gemacht und zwei ältere Designs ausgegraben, für neue hat die Zeit einfach nicht gereicht. Es sind zwei Karten geworden, eine mit Stiefmütterchen und eine mit Schneeglöckchen.
Yes, I know that I still haven’t published the “Under The Stars” pattern. I am double- and triple-checking the math but I am hoping to be done next week. In the meantime I finished the Gems & Daisies top and will start editing the pattern as soon as I am done with the other one. I will be at a show in early May and would like to have both done by then. I think Gems & Daisies is my favourite, the colours are so bright and cheerful, and there is lots of space for quilting, this will be a fun one to do.
Ich weiß, ich weiß, die “Sternenhimmel” Anleitung ist immer noch nicht fertig. Ich bin immer noch dabei, alles nachzurechnen, um sicherzugehen, dass es auch stimmt. Ich hoffe, dass ich nächste Woche endlich damit zufrieden bin. In der Zwischenzeit habe ich immerhin das “Gänseblümchen” Top beendet und mache dann gleich mit der nächsten Anleitung weiter. Anfang Mai bin ich hier bei einer Quilt Show mit meinen Patterns dabei, und bis dahin hätte ich beide gern fertig. Ich glaube, dieser Quilt ist mein Favorit, die Farben sind so schön fröhlich und leuchtend, und es gibt große, freie Flächen zum Quilten, da kann ich mich richtig austoben.
This is Gail’s version of a Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilt. The blue hexagons add an interesting element to the design. I have only found one other version online that looked similar. It had green hexagons instead of blue ones to represent leaves. Gail wasn’t particularly excited about her work, and I have no idea why, I think it’s a wonderful quilt. And she didn’t know how she wanted it quilted and said a simple meander would be just fine. Luckily Gail is not only a customer but also a friend, so I could tell her that a simple meander would be just awful and that her work deserved something better. I do understand that not everyone wants to spend a lot of money on custom quilting, so for Gail’s quilt I tried to come up with something that I could do without starting and stopping all the time. I did a meander in the background and figured out how to quilt my way through all the flowers without having to stop. I am quite happy with the result, and so was Gail when she picked it up.
Diese Variante eines Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilts hat Gail genäht. Die blauen Hexagons, die die einzelnen Blumen verbinden, sind eine interessante Abwandlung. Ich habe online danach gesucht und nur noch einen weiteren Quilt gefunden, der allerdings grüne Hexagons statt der blauen hat, und diese sollen Blätter darstellen. Gail war nicht wirklich begeistert vom Ergebnis ihrer Arbeit, und ich konnte nicht herausfinden, woran das lag, ich finde, das ist ein toller Quilt. Sie wusste auch nicht, wie sie ihn gequiltet haben wollte und meinte, großflächiges Stippling würde es wohl tun. Zum Glück ist Gail nicht nur eine Kundin, sondern auch eine Freundin, so dass ich mein Entsetzen nicht verbergen musste, sondern ihr sagen konnte, dass ihr Quilt ein besseres Muster verdient. Nun will ja nicht jeder ein Vermögen für Custom Quilting ausgeben, daher habe ich versucht, ein Muster zu finden, dass ich ohne ständig Abzusetzen freihändig quilten konnte. Und es ist mir auch gelungen, mich durch die einzelnen Blüten zu quilten und nur den Hintergrund mit Stippling zu füllen, ohne ständig absetzen zu müssen. Ich bin mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden, und Gail war es auch, als sie den Quilt abholte.
When Joanne picked up her last quilt, she already had the next top ready. This one was made from a Jelly Roll in 1930’s reproduction fabrics. I love the bright colours and the creative pattern that creates an interesting secondary design. The pantograph Joanne chose is called “Wandering Daisies”.

This is Joanne’s version of the Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt. Most of you are probably familiar with the story/the book behind this quilt but for those of you who are not, here is a short recap: In 1922, “The Farmer’s Wife” magazine asked its readers if, based on their own experience, they would have their daughter marry a farmer. They received over 7,000 letters answering the question. 55 of those answers are included in the book “The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt: 55 Letters And The 111 Blocks They Inspired”. Joanne’s quilt was quilted with the design “Swirling Feathers”, we thought the traditional look required something with feathers. While writing this post I suddenly realized that the quilt is upside down in the pictures, sorry about that.

Für diejenigen, die von diesem Quilt noch nichts gehört haben, hier ist die Geschichte dazu: Im Jahre 1922 startete das “Farmer’s Wife” Magazin eine Umfrage unter den Leserinnen, ob sie, basierend auf ihren eigenen Erfahrungen, ihre Töchter ebenfalls mit einem Farmer verheiraten würden. This is Ginger’s version of the Tula Pink City Sampler. In retrospect Ginger thinks she should have chosen a different fabric for the sashing, she finds the black with white polka dots too dark but I honestly can’t see anything wrong with it. This is a good reminder that we are always our own worst critic and that we shouldn’t point out the “flaws” we see in our work to others because they might have a completely different perception. Ginger put a lot of work into this and fussy cut many of the fabrics. Don’t you just love the strawberry print? For quilting we went back to “Turbulence”, a curvy, flowing design that complements the blocks but stays in the background.

Rückblickend betrachtet ist Ginger der Meinung, dass sie nicht den richtigen Stoff für das Sashing gewählt hat, sie findet den schwarzen Stoff zu dunkel. Ich sehe da ehrlich gesagt überhaupt kein Problem, ich hätte bei dieser Farbkombination vermutlich sogar auf die weißen Punkte verzichtet und ganz schwarzen Stoff genommen. Das zeigt wieder mal, das wir mit unseren eigenen Arbeiten immer sehr kritisch umgehen, und wir sollten solche Bedenken nicht sofort erwähnen, da die meisten Leute gar nicht nachvollziehen können, warum uns das so stört. Ginger hat eine Menge Arbeit in diesen Quilt investiert und viele Stoffe detailgenau zugeschnitten. Sind die Erbeeren nicht einfach zum Anbeißen? Zum Quilten haben wir auf “Turbulence” zurückgegriffen, fließende Kurven, die im Hintergrund bleiben.
“Bugsy” is the second quilt I quilted for Carol and the name of the RJR fabric collection (designed by Kids Quilts) that she used for the project. It is also a gift for one of her granddaughters. We didn’t have to think about the quilting very long either, the bug theme of the fabrics helped us choose “Butterfly Tango” as a suitable design right away. A cheerful quilt and a wonderful gift for a little girl.
“Bugsy” ist der zweite Quilt, den Carol mir im Januar brachte und der Name der RJR Stoffkollektion (entworfen von Kids Quilts), die sie für diesen Quilt verwendet hat. Auch dieser ist ein Geschenk für eine ihrer Enkelinnen. Über ein passendes Quiltmuster mussten wir nicht lange nachdenken, das “Bug”-Thema der verwendeten Stoffe ließ uns sofort zu den Schmetterlingen des “Butterfly Tango” greifen. “Bug” ist hier nicht wörtlich als “Käfer” zu verstehen, sondern als Sammelbegriff für alles, was da so kreucht und fleucht, ein Stoff hat z.B. auch Schnecken. Das Ergebnis ist ein farbenfroher, fröhlicher Quilt, ein schönes Geschenk für ein kleines Mädchen.
Today it’s my turn to talk about UFO’s, not the easiest task since I don’t have any. UFO’s in my opinion are projects that you don’t work on anymore, that exist in a drawer or corner or bin in your sewing room, and when you happen to come across them they make you feel guilty for abandoning them. When I started quilting 20 years ago, I only worked on one project at a time, and I finished everything within weeks. I ended up doing a lot of hand quilting and later on also hand appliqué, and since these projects always take a while, I started having two projects on the go at the same time. But I was still focused and had a plan and finished them all within a reasonable time frame.
Heute bin ich an der Reihe, über UFOs zu sprechen. Da ich keine UFOs habe, ist das keine einfache Aufgabe. Als UFOs qualifizieren sich meiner Meinung nach nur die Projekte, an denen nicht mehr gearbeitet wird, die irgendwo in dunklen Ecken oder Schubladen im Nähzimmer schlummern und die ein schlechtes Gewissen hervorrufen, wenn sie zufällig ans Tageslicht gelangen. Als ich vor 20 Jahren mit dem Quilten begonnen habe, habe ich immer nur an einem Projekt gearbeitet und alles innerhalb weniger Wochen fertiggestellt. Dann habe ich eine Weile viel mit der Hand gequiltet und später auch appliziert, was ziemlich zeitaufwendig war, und ich hatte meist zwei Projekte gleichzeitig in Arbeit. Aber ich war immer noch auf mein Ziel konzentriert und beendete alles kontinuierlich.
Und dann kam der erste Swap, an dem ich teilnahm. Und der war eine riesengroße Enttäuschung. Als Perfektionistin hatte ich tagelang sorgfältig an meinen Blöcken genäht, und was ich zurückbekam, war ganz offensichtlich innerhalb von 30 Minuten lieblos zusammengehauen worden. Danach habe ich mich von Swaps möglichst ferngehalten, aber nun hatte ich plötzlich ein unfertiges Projekt in einer Schublade, das mir nicht uneingeschränkt Spaß und gute Laune brachte. Nach einem Jahr des schlechten Gewissens hatte ich genug. Frei nach dem Motto „Wenn es nicht glücklich macht, muss es verschwinden“, habe ich sie alle entsorgt, die häßlichen, schiefen Blöcke. Und zu dieser Entscheidung stehe ich immer noch, und ich kann es nur empfehlen. Es hat keinen Sinn, sich mit Projekten zu belasten, die einem nicht (mehr) gefallen. Man muss sie ja nicht gleich wegwerfen, es findet sich meist ein Abnehmer für ungeliebte Blöcke.
And then there were swaps. I never participated in many because the first one I ever joined was such a disappointment. Being a perfectionist, I had laboured over my blocks for days, and the ones I got back had obviously been slapped together in just half an hour. This not only kept me away from many swaps, it was also my first experience of having something unfinished in a drawer that I didn’t wholeheartedly love. I have always been big on decluttering, and after a year or so of feeling guilty for not finishing the swap project, I decided that it was time to move on. If it doesn’t make you happy, it needs to go. I threw them all out, those crooked, ugly blocks that I couldn’t stand. And I still stand by that decision and highly recommend it. If you don’t love it, get rid of it. Give it to a friend, put it on your guild’s “free” table. Just don’t let it drag you down.
So today I am going to show you my longterm WIP. It has been around since 2009, and I work on it on and off, I still love it, and there is no guilt involved, it will get finished whenever I am ready. A very long time ago, maybe in 2005, I had a few quilting friends over at my house, and one of them showed us a picture of a quilt that was made mostly with hexagons received as a birthday gift. Well, back then I carelessly said I would take hexagons as a birthday gift, too. And you all know you should be careful what you wish for, right? Of course my friends remembered what I had said, and when I turned 40 four years later they gave me a big box full of basted hexagons in all colours. I think there were around 800 1/2” hexagons in that box.

Heute zeige ich daher mein Langzeit-WIP (Work in Progress, also ein Projekt, an dem noch gearbeitet wird). Begonnen habe ich es 2009, und ich arbeite in unregelmäßigen Abständen immer noch daran, ich liebe es noch genauso wie am Anfang, und ich habe kein schlechtes Gewissen, dass es noch nicht fertig ist. Wenn die Zeit reif ist, wird es beendet. Vor langer Zeit, ich glaube, es war 2005, hatte ich ein paar Quiltfreundinnen zum Kaffee eingeladen, und eine von ihnen zeigte uns ein Bild von einem Quilt, der vor allem aus Hexagons bestand, die die Näherin als Geburtstagsgeschenk erhalten hatte. Damals habe ich leichtfertig geäußert, als Geburtstagsgeschenk würde ich Hexagons auch nehmen. Man soll ja immer vorsichtig sein mit den Wünschen, die man so äußert, und das war auch hier der Fall. Meine Freundinnen vergaßen nicht, was ich da gesagt hatte, und vier Jahre später erhielt ich zu meinem 40. Geburtstag eine große Kiste voller gehefteter 1/2“ Hexagons in allen Farben. Es waren ca. 800 Stück, wenn ich mich richtig erinnere.
Und ich hatte wohl in der Zwischenzeit auch immer wieder daran gedacht, denn ich wusste genau, was ich machen wollte, der Entwurf war längst fertig. Ich wollte möglichst viele Farben verwenden und einen Farbkreis nähen. Noch am selben Abend habe ich die Hexagons sortiert (unter tatkräftiger Hilfe meiner beiden Quiltinspektoren, die sofort in der Kiste sitzen mussten). Und am nächsten Morgen habe ich die ersten Hexagons zusammengenäht. Danach habe ich immer mal wieder daran gearbeitet bis 2012. Wir verkauften unser Haus und bereiteten den Umzug nach Kanada vor. Damals verschwand das Projekt in einer Umzugskiste, und ich sah es erst zwei Jahre später wieder. Rückblickend betrachtet war das ein Fehler, in diesen zwei Jahren hätte ich viel Zeit zum Handnähen gehabt.

And I must have been thinking about it too, because I had a design all ready. I wanted to use as many colours as possible and turn them into a colour wheel. I remember that I sorted the hexagons the day I received them (with the help of my trusted quilt inspectors who had to sit in the box right away) and started sewing the very next morning. I worked on them on and off until 2012 when we sold our house and prepared for our move to Canada. I put them in a box and didn’t see them again until two years later. Looking back this was a mistake. They would have been a good project to have with me, I would have had a lot of time for hand sewing during those two years.
My goal now is to finish them before I turn 50. This gives me a little over a year, until May 2019. I hope that is a reasonable time frame. I have no idea yet how to quilt it but I know inspiration will come when the top is finished.

You will receive a tracking number except for overseas shipments. All shipping will either be at priority mail rates this year (due to weight of gifts, none of the giveaways are less than 14 ounces. Paypal fees are added to that amount to cover that fee.
Please note, every effort is made to protect the prizes. They go into a plastic bin when I receive them, and it is covered by an airtight cover. I have a dog in my home and I have a smoker in my home, so I do everything possible to protect the prizes.
Most companies are very good about getting prizes off to customers quickly also, but some companies are overseas, so please allow all sponsors a 2-week time period before you report to me that you still haven’t received your prize. When the company is overseas, it can take 6 weeks to 90 days for an item to also arrive.
Whether or not you read the above, the rules for giveaways are in place to protect everyone. I do not want to hear you didn’t read them, they will be posted on my blog daily during each featured day. There is no excuse for not reading them.
