Frogland Friends

Irene made this quilt using the “Frogland Friends” fabric line. It will be a gift for a friend’s baby, and quilting it was a lot of fun. I find panels rather difficult to quilt. You don’t want to take away from the motif but you have a lot of space that you can’t leave unquilted. I mostly followed the outlines of the print and filled the background. Quilting the pieced border was so much easier, one look, and I knew what I wanted to do. The characters are just adorable. My favourite is the turtle on the left. And the little bee reminds me of Willy from the 1970s cartoon series “Maya the Honey Bee”. I have no idea if this show even ran in North America but it was a big hit in Germany back then, and we watched it every week.

Frogland Friends

Rugby Quilt

Patricia’s grandson is a rugby player and has collected a huge assortment of jerseys over the years. She tackled the task of turning them into a quilt for him, and I admire her patience and workmanship. The material is quite slippery, even with stabilizer on the back, but she managed to put it all together perfectly. Quilting it was also a different kind of adventure. There seem to be different materials that are used to manufacture the jerseys, and some of them are more slippery than others. I ended up moving the machine with one hand while smoothing out the fabric with the other. Quilting around the button tabs and other bulky parts was rather easy compared to keeping it all flat without pleats sewn in. I think quilting this on a domestic machine would be close to impossible, you would need at least two more hands to keep it all flat and straight.

Rugby Quilt

Out of the Blue

This quilt in lovely blues and greys was made by Cathy, and she asked me for light custom quilting. The quilt is essentially made up of half-square triangles in two different sizes, and I challenged myself to come up with different designs for the two sizes and the light and dark areas that could be quilted continuously without starting and stopping all the time. The more I do this, the more I realize that this is the part I enjoy most. The back is Fireside, and I love the secondary pattern that the quilting created.

Out of the Blue

Chance of Showers

I named this quilt “Chance of Showers” because it reminded me of a quilt I posted about before, although it is not exactly the same. (Click here to see Alex’s project on Teaginny Designs). Jackie made this version, and she used a pattern by the Missouri Star Quilt Company called “Keyhole”. She raided her friends’ scrap bins for all the different blues, and it turned out lovely. It was quilted with the design “Peacock Feathers”.

Chance of Showers

Christmas is Coming

“Christmas is Coming” is a pattern by local designer Barb Cherniwchan of Coach House Designs. This is Brenda’s version, and she wasn’t happy with the nutcracker’s face and made some changes along the way. Didn’t he turn out adorable? The quilt is assembled in rows, from snowflakes in the top row to wrapped gifts at the bottom. I tried to echo these designs in the background quilting and added a little texture to the motifs themselves. I don’t really need Christmas to come just yet but Brenda will sure be ready this year.

Cranberry Chutney

Sharlene made this quilt from all batik fabrics. I love the name, isn’t “Cranberry Chutney” just perfect? For quilting, we chose the design “Flourish”. The back is a lovely purple in reality, not that weird bluish colour that my camera decided to show.

Cranberry Chutney

Coastal Bliss

“Coastal Bliss” is a quilt by Canadian designer Shania Sunga, you might remember her “Canadian Mystery Quilt” for Canada’s 150th anniversary last year. It uses a combination of patchwork, appliqué and fabrics that Shania designed for this project. This version was made by Naida. When I saw the wavy pattern of the border fabric, it reminded me of my “Fantasy Flames” pantograph, and that’s what we chose for Naida’s quilt. With a little imagination the flames could also be waves, and they pick up the border fabric design nicely.

Coastal Bliss

Light and Shadow

Mary made this stunning quilt from batik fabrics. Lots and lots of small pieces, and she patiently put them together over a period of six months. For the outer border she used the same pattern but switched the values, and I love the result. For quilting Mary chose the pattern “Feathered Curls”.

I am taking next week off, see you all when I get back!

Light and Shadow

Quilt Patch Flowers

This pretty quilt was made by Brenda, using a pattern from the Quilt Patch Pattern Company. I figured out a design for the checkerboard panels that I could stitch without starting and stopping. This always requires a little planning but is actually not as difficult as it sounds. For the flower panels, I filled the background with several designs and only quilted the flowers as much/little as necessary which gives them a nice three-dimensional look. I am very happy with the way this quilt turned out.

Quilt Patch Flowers

Summer in the Park

Last year I quilted Linda’s “Picnic Quilt” with a strawberry design called “Very Berry”. Marilyn is Linda’s neighbour and friend, and she made a similar quilt and thought the strawberries were perfect for her project as well. “Summer in the Park” is a Missouri Star Quilt Company pattern that uses Jelly Roll strips to piece the blocks.
