Patricia’s grandson is a rugby player and has collected a huge assortment of jerseys over the years. She tackled the task of turning them into a quilt for him, and I admire her patience and workmanship. The material is quite slippery, even with stabilizer on the back, but she managed to put it all together perfectly. Quilting it was also a different kind of adventure. There seem to be different materials that are used to manufacture the jerseys, and some of them are more slippery than others. I ended up moving the machine with one hand while smoothing out the fabric with the other. Quilting around the button tabs and other bulky parts was rather easy compared to keeping it all flat without pleats sewn in. I think quilting this on a domestic machine would be close to impossible, you would need at least two more hands to keep it all flat and straight.

Damit sie nicht im Schrank ihr Dasein fristen müssen, hat Patricia sie an sich genommen und in einen Quilt verwandelt. Ich bewundere ihre Geduld und ihre Nähkünste. Das Material ist sehr rutschig, sie hat zwar alles mit Stabilizer hinterlegt, aber es erfordert trotzdem viel Geschick, die Nähte so passend hinzubekommen. Und das Ganze dann zu quilten war auch ein kleines Abenteuer. Rugbyshirt ist nicht gleich Rugbyshirt, offenbar werden hier auch verschiedene Materialien verwendet, und manche sind rutschiger als andere. Letztendlich habe ich die Maschine mit nur einer Hand bewegt und mit der anderen gleichzeitig alles glatt gestrichen, um das Einnähen von Falten zu verhindern. Um die Knopfleisten und andere Erhebungen herumzunähen war dann eine relativ einfache Übung im Vergleich mit dem Rest. Ich glaube, mit einer Haushaltsnähmaschine hätte man das gar nicht quilten können, dazu braucht man mehr als zwei Hände, um alles glatt und gerade zu halten.
