Heart Pillow Project Update 2017
It is time for another update on the Breast Cancer Heart Pillows. I have collected 195 pillows so far which is amazing. This means we have enough pillows to be able to supply all Chilliwack patients for more than a year. Quite a few of those pillows unfortunately were a little understuffed. This was my mistake and a cultural misunderstanding. Although Canada is officially metric, imperial measurements are still around in everyday life, and a weight in grams doesn’t mean much to many people. And German recipes usually list ingredients by weight, so most people have a kitchen scale. In North America, ingredients are measured by volume, that’s why people have measuring cups and spoons but very often not a kitchen scale. Being used to the German way it never occurred to me that figuring out the correct amount of fibrefill to go into a heart pillow could be a problem.
Hier kommt ein weiteres Update zu den Herzkissen für Brustkrebspatientinnen. Ich habe inzwischen 195 Stück gesammelt und bin immer noch ganz begeistert von der Unterstützung. Damit haben wir genug Kissen, um alle Patienten in Chilliwack für mehr als ein Jahr zu versorgen. Leider waren viele der Kissen nicht fest genug gestopft. Das war mein Fehler und basiert auf einem kulturellen Missverständnis. Kanada ist zwar offiziell metrisch, aber im täglichen Leben finden sich die Imperial-Maße doch noch häufig. Besonders beim Gewicht sagt den meisten Kanadiern die Einheit Gramm gar nichts. In Deutschland listen die meisten Rezepte die benötigten Zutaten nach Gewicht auf, so dass viele eine Küchenwaage besitzen. In Nordamerika hingegen geht es nach Volumen, es werden Messbecher und -löffel benutzt, so dass kaum jemand eine Waage besitzt. Mir ist überhaupt nicht die Idee gekommen, dass das Abwiegen des Füllmaterials ein Problem darstellen könnte.
Es ist aber zum Glück ein Problem, das sich leicht beheben lässt. Ich habe mittlerweile nachgeschlagen, wieviel 170 g im Imperial System sind (6 oz), und ich nehme meine Küchenwaage jetzt zu jedem Treffen mit. Die Damen wissen jetzt, wo das Problem liegt, und sie wissen auch, dass sie einfach das letzte Stück der Naht offen lassen können, wenn sie sich nicht sicher sind, das macht es dann einfacher für mich, noch etwas nachzufüllen. Aber im ersten Schwung bekam ich eine Menge Kissen, die viel zu weich waren. Westland Insurance hat netterweise eine kleine Summe gespendet, von der ich eine Menge Füllmaterial kaufen konnte, so dass ich nicht alles selbst bezahlen musste. Sie haben dafür auch keine Gegenleistung erwartet, aber ich habe mich sehr über die Unterstützung gefreut und finde, sie hier zu erwähnen ist das Mindeste. Lyn R. kam dann an einem Tag zu mir, und gemeinsam haben wir dann im Akkord die Herzkissen nachgestopft. Anfang Januar hatte ich dann einen Check Up Termin im Abbotsford Cancer Centre und habe bei der Gelegenheit die Herzkissen dort vorgestellt. Sie hatten auch dort noch nie von diesen Kissen gehört, waren aber sofort begeistert von der Idee. Eine der Sekretärinnen ist auch Quilterin und hat sich sofort das Muster heruntergeladen. Jetzt bin ich gerade dabei, mit der Gilde in Abbotsford Kontakt aufzunehmen, um zu sehen, ob dort auch Interesse besteht, das Projekt zu unterstützen.
Of course this is a problem that can be easily fixed. I converted the amount that is needed to imperial measurements (6 oz = 170 g), and I now carry my kitchen scale with me to every meeting. People are aware of the problem, and they know that if they are not sure they can just leave the final part of the seam open. This makes it easier if an adjustment is needed. But I ended up with a lot of pillows that needed more fibrefill. Westland Insurance kindly donated some money so I didn’t have to pay for all of it myself. They didn’t ask for any kind of recognition but I really appreciate their generosity, so I think it is only fair to mention them here. Lyn R. came over one afternoon, and together we fixed the pillows. I had a check up appointment at the Abbotsford Cancer Centre in early January, and after the heart pillow success in Chilliwack I decided to introduce the project there. They had never heard about those pillows but loved the idea and would be more than happy to pass them out to their patients. One of the secretaries is a quilter herself and downloaded the pattern right away. I am currently looking to introduce the heart pillows to the Abbotsford guild to see if they would be interested in supporting this cause.
