Heute ist Show and Tell Day beim Row Along, und hier ist die Übersicht über die teilnehmenden Blogger. Ich habe leider nichts zu zeigen, ich stecke bis über beide Ohren in den Vorbereitungen der Quilt Show, und dann war auch noch Thanksgiving-Wochenende in Kanada, so dass ich weniger zum Quilten kam, als mir lieb war. Es gibt auch noch einen letzten Preis zu gewinnen, einen Einkaufsgutschein für den Fat Quarter Shop, es lohnt sich also, bei den teilnehmenden Bloggern vorbeizuschauen und zu kommentieren.
This is another of Salli’s Improv Quilts using Japanese fabrics, this time in blue. She made this as a gift for her husband and asked me to quilt several sayings on the borders, otherwise she was fine with whatever I would come up with. A modern quilt and a gift for a man, I had to think about that for a while. I ended up choosing two different designs for the blue background and the feature fabrics and quilting them, pretending they were all over designs. That was much harder than it sounded, and I managed to thoroughly confuse myself from time to time but I double-checked everything before taking the quilt of the frame, and in the end it was all correct. For the background filler, I did a random line of circles and then echoed around it. For the feature fabrics I chose two geometric designs, and especially the placement for the curved one was rather difficult to figure out in the half and quarter parts of what I determined to be one block. The writing on the borders seemed to be really easy compared to that. Now that it is done I am very happy with the result, and Salli was delighted when she saw it.
Auch diesen Quilt hat Salli nach der Improv Quilt Methode aus japanischen Stoffen genäht. Er ist ein Geschenk für ihren Mann, und sie bat mich, verschiedene Sprüche in die Ränder einzuquilten. Für den Rest des Quilts hatte ich freie Hand. Ein moderner Quilt für einen Mann, da musste ich eine Weile nachdenken. Ich habe mich dann schließlich entschieden, zwei verschiedene Designs für den dunkelblauen Hintergrund und die gemusterten Stoffe zu wählen und beim Quilten diese dann so zu überlagern, als ob die Muster “all over” wären. Das war deutlich schwieriger als es sich anhört, und ich habe mich manchmal ganz schön selbst verwirrt. Ich habe dann zweimal alles überprüft, bevor ich den Quilt vom Rahmen genommen habe, und letztendlich hat alles gestimmt. Für den Hintergrund schlängeln sich Kreise mit Echo-Quilting über den blauen Stoff, auf den gemusterten Stoffen wechseln sich zwei geometrische Designs ab. Besonders das kurvige Design hatte es in sich, es war nicht einfach, das korrekt auf den halben und Viertel-Blöcken zu platzieren. Die Schriftzüge auf den Rändern kamen mir im Vergleich dazu richtig einfach vor. Aber mit dem Endergebnis bin ich sehr zufrieden, und Salli hat es auch gut gefallen.
Michelle made this quilt as a gift for a friend’s baby, using a modern fabric line. Instead of putting a label on the back, she embroidered the details onto one of the blocks, what a great idea. The back is cuddly Fireside and shows off the quilting design called “Celtic Scroll”.
Dieser Quilt ist ein Geschenk für das Baby einer Freundin und wurde von Michelle aus einer modernen Stoffserie genäht. Sie hat anstelle eines Labels auf der Rückseite die Informationen auf einen Block gestickt, eine sehr kreative Idee. Für die Rückseite hat sie kuscheligen Fireside gewählt, der das Quiltmuster “Celtic Scroll” sehr schön zeigt.
Our guild is organizing a pincushion swap, and I was thinking of making a pumpkin but then I came across a tutorial for this funny guy – The Happy Hedgehog. Isn’t he the cutest? I liked how the pins I put in created his spines, it felt so much better than poking any other kind of animal pincushion… 😉 If you would like to make your own version, I have included the link to the tutorial at the bottom of the post.
Unsere Gilde organisiert gerade einen Nadelkissentausch, und ich wollte eigentlich einen Kürbis nähen, aber dann bin ich über die Anleitung für diesen lustigen Gesellen gestolpert – The Happy Hedgehog. Ist er nicht knuffig? For this modern improv quilt, Salli cut up fabrics that she bought on a trip to Japan and mixed them with what she had in her stash. The pantograph I used is called “Cinnamon Swirl”. I am not really a modern quilter but I quite like this quilt. The colours, the pattern, somehow it speaks to me.

Das Quiltmuster, das ich verwendet habe, heißt “Cinnamon Swirl”. Ich würde mich ja nicht wirklich als Modern Quilter bezeichnen, aber dieser Quilt spricht mich sehr an. Die Farben, das Muster… das hat was.
June made this quilt as a gift, using modern fabrics. We didn’t have to think about a pantograph very much, the modern design “Bauhaus” was just perfect for her project. It was also a good compromise since June wanted “something with squares” to match the top while I always think that a very geometrical top needs some curves. “Bauhaus” brought it all together, and we were both very happy with the result.

Über ein Quiltmuster mussten wir nicht lange nachdenken, das moderne Design “Bauhaus” war perfekt für ihr Projekt. Es war auch ein guter Kompromiss, da June gern “etwas mit Quadraten oder Rechtecken” wollte, während ich ja immer der Meinung bin, dass ein sehr geometrischer Quilt ein kurviges Quiltmuster braucht. “Bauhaus” war da genau richtig, und wir waren beide sehr zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis.
I finally finished the top of the square dance quilt. It was the sheet music border that took forever, first it was my EQ program crashing on me and losing all my work, then it was figuring out how to actually do it. And I wouldn’t want to attempt it again, it took a lot of time to get it right. My biggest problem was how to create the five line staff all around the border. I didn’t want to cut narrow strips of fabric and I didn’t want to embroider them either… doing inches and inches of satin stitch didn’t really appeal to me. I was experimenting with couching and hand embroidery thread when I came across some black 1/8″ wide ribbon and it occurred to me that this might just be what I needed. It was still a lot of work to sew on yards and yards of ribbon (and getting it all as straight and parallel as possible) but it worked well and I am happy with the result. Now I just need to find the time to actually quilt one of my own projects.
Ich habe es endlich geschafft, das Top des Square Dance Quilts fertigzustellen. Es war der zweite Rand mit den Noten, der mich so ewig aufgehalten hat, und ich würde das ehrlich gesagt auch nicht noch einmal in Angriff nehmen wollen. Zuerst war ja mein EQ-Programm abgestürzt, und ich musste neu zeichnen, und dann musste ich eine Methode finden, die Musik auch tatsächlich auf meinen Quilt zu bringen. Es waren vor allem die Notenlinien, die mir Kopfzerbrechen bereitet haben. Ich wollte ungern so schmale lange Streifen schneiden und applizieren, und aufsticken wollte ich sie eigentlich auch nicht… stundenlang meterweise Satin Stich mit der Maschine, das erschien mir nicht sehr verlockend. Ich habe dann mit Handstickgarn und Couching mit der Maschine experimentiert, und das war gar nicht mal so schlecht. Dann bin ich eher zufällig auf 1/8″ schmales schwarzes Schleifenband gestoßen und dachte plötzlich, dass das vielleicht eine gute Lösung wäre. Es war zwar immer noch eine Menge Arbeit, meterweise Schleifenband aufzunähen (und zwar möglichst gerade und parallel), aber es hat gut funktioniert, und ich bin mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden. Jetzt muss ich nur noch die Zeit finden, mein eigenes Projekt zu quilten.
Aspen Ridge is the name of the fabric line by Northcott that Charlene used to make this beautiful autumn quilt. The “Deer in the Woods” pantograph was just perfect for this project, featuring elk, moose and bears, picking up the animal designs from the panels.

Ginger made this quilt for her little granddaughter, using her baby clothes to make the blocks. It was designed to fit Hudson’s “big girl” bed. I couldn’t quilt over some of the elements, for example the button tabs and embellishments, therefore we couldn’t use a pantograph. We decided to go with a free motion allover design, this way I could avoid areas that would give me trouble and quilt around them. I was trying to go with a heart pattern at first but it just didn’t look right, and I finally settled on flowers.

Der Quilt enthält einige Elemente, über die ich nicht quilten kann, z.B. Knopfleisten, daher kam ein Pantograph-Muster nicht in Frage. Wir entschieden uns dann für ein Free Motion Allover Muster, so dass ich um diese Stellen herum quilten konnte. Zuerst wollte ich Herzen quilten, aber irgendwie sah das nicht richtig aus, und ich bin schließlich bei Blümchen gelandet.
When I heard the theme for this year’s Row Along I didn’t have to think about it at all. Yellowstone National Park is my happy place and has been for over a decade. I especially enjoy watching the geysers and observing the changes in geothermal activity from year to year. And I also love the wildlife, the hikes, the beautiful views and the general peaceful feeling of the park. With millions of visitors every year Yellowstone might not feel very peaceful to the average visitor but you just need to get off the beaten path. As soon as you get away from the big crowds it is a wonderful place to visit with lots of things to see and do.
Über das Thema des diesjährigen Row Along musste ich nicht lange nachdenken. Yellowstone National Park in den USA ist mein “Happy Place”, und das schon seit Jahren. Besonders gern beobachte ich die Geysire, es ist interessant zu sehen, wie sich die geothermale Aktivität von Jahr zu Jahr verändert. Aber auch die Tiere, die Wanderwege, die schönen Ausblicke und die friedliche Stimmung im Park haben es mir angetan. Mehrere Millionen Besucher kommen jedes Jahr in den Park, die meisten davon im Juli und August, und in den Hauptbereichen, besonders um den Geysir Old Faithful herum, ist es dann natürlich nicht gerade friedlich. Aber man muss sich nur ein wenig von den Massen und den Hauptattraktionen entfernen, und schon ist es eine ganz andere Welt, in der es viel zu sehen und zu erleben gibt.
Für mein Design habe ich mit dem Geysir Old Faithful und mit den Wasserfällen des Yellowstone River im Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone begonnen. Am schwierigsten fand ich, den Übergang im Hintergrund hinzubekommen, da habe ich ziemlich lange herumgepuzzelt. Einen Bison und ein Bisonkalb wollte ich auch hinzufügen, aber dann fehlte irgendwie noch etwas, und links war noch Platz für Grand Prismatic Spring. Grand Prismatic Spring ist die größte heiße Quelle in den USA, und die bunten Farben werden durch thermophile Bakterien gebildet, die in den verschiedenen Temperaturzonen der Quelle leben.
I started my design with Old Faithful Geyser and the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River. The most difficult part of the whole process was trying to set up the background just right, to make it go smoothly from the geyser area to the canyon view. I knew that I wanted to add a bison and bison calf but then thought there was something missing and added Grand Prismatic Spring on the left. Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest hot spring in the US, and the colours are created by mats of thermophile bacteria.

Northcott Fabrics generously offered their fabrics to all the designers, and we could choose anything from their current collections for our projects. Their “Naturescapes” lines were exactly what I needed for my row, and I chose four fabrics for the background. The sky, trees and rocks were just perfect for Yellowstone’s rugged landscape. Thank you, Northcott, for your beautiful fabrics. I turned my row into a wall hanging and registered it for our quilt show in October. The pattern for the row will be available for free download for a week. Afterwards the pattern for the complete wall hanging will be available for purchase. If you know me, you know that I am fond of tiny appliqué pieces, and I appliquéd every piece of my design that isn’t marked as embroidery. Some of those pieces are very small, and if you don’t enjoy working with them, you can always embroider the details.

Der Himmel, die Bäume und die Felsen waren einfach perfekt für meine Yellowstone-Landschaft. Ich habe aus meiner Reihe dann einen Wandbehang gemacht und ihn für unsere Quiltshow im Oktober registriert. Wer micht kennt, der weiß, dass ich sehr gern mit winzigen Fitzelteilen appliziere, und ich habe alle Teile, die nicht als aufgestickt gekennzeichnet sind, auch tatsächlich appliziert. Einige Teile sind aber wirklich sehr klein, und wem das zu kompliziert ist, der kann auch gern diese Details aufsticken.
