A while ago Cynthia made the quilt“Gossip in the Garden”while teaching herself how to do hand appliqué. She liked the process so much that she chose another pattern with lots of handwork, Gail Pan’s “Sopwell Ladies Basket Society Quilt”. Isn’t it just beautiful? Cynthia’s sewing is very accurate, in fact when she brought me her Gossip in the Garden quilt I couldn’t believe that this had been her first attempt at hand appliqué. I know that she likes outline and echo quilting, and I threw in a few feathers here and there to stabilize larger areas, and we were both quite happy with the result.
Vor einiger Zeit hatte Cynthia mir ihren Quilt “Gossip in the Garden” zum Quilten gebracht, ein Projekt, das sie sich ausgesucht hatte, um das Applizieren von Hand zu erlernen. Diese Technik hat ihr soviel Spaß gemacht, dass sie inzwischen den nächsten Quilt vollendet hat, Gail Pans Design “The Sopwell Ladies Basket Society Quilt”. Ist er nicht toll geworden? Cynthia näht immer super exakt, als sie mir den Gossip in the Garden Quilt gebracht hat, konnte ich gar nicht glauben, dass das ihr Übungsprojekt war. Ich weiß, dass sie Outline und Echo Quilting gern mag, zum Stabilisieren größerer Flächen habe ich Feathers verwendet, und mit dem Ergebnis waren wir beide sehr zufrieden.
Elaine from BC faithfully sent me a picture of her completed Barnyard Bash block every month. It was so much fun to see what she came up with as she made small (or sometimes not so small) changes to the patterns. She managed to finish her quilt before I finished my sample, I was still stitching on the binding when she emailed me the picture of her version. Great job, Elaine! Who else has made the blocks and not just collected the patterns? I am still willing to set up a gallery but I need more pictures. Send them to me, and your quilt might be featured in a future Show and Tell post.
Barnyard Bash – made by Elaine from BC
Elaine aus BC hat im letzten Jahr den Block des Monats mitgenäht und mir jeden Monat ein Bild ihres fertigen Barnyard Bash Blocks geschickt. Ich habe mich immer gefreut zu sehen, wie sie mit dem Design gearbeitet hat und welche Details sie verändert hat, um ihrer Version einen eigenen Charakter zu geben. Und sie hat es sogar geschafft, den gesamten Quilt fertigzustellen, bevor ich mein Musterstück beendet hatte. Ich habe noch am Binding gestichelt, als sie mir das Photo schickte. Ist er nicht toll geworden? Hat sonst noch jemand fertige Blöcke oder gar einen fertigen Quilt? Ich würde gern eine Gallerie einrichten, aber dafür brauche ich mehr Bilder. Brenda made this cozy flannel quilt as a Christmas gift for her son. The pattern is called “Hopscotch”, the cat is not part of the original design but Brenda’s own addition. Can you believe I never even saw it until I looked at the picture? I must have been blind while quilting it but then again it is easier to see from a distance. The modern design “Bauhaus” worked well for this quilt. This is the only picture I could find of the quilt, so there won’t be any detail pictures today, sorry.
Diesen kuscheligen Quilt aus Flanellstoffen hat Brenda nach dem Muster “Hopscotch” als Weihnachtsgeschenk für ihren Sohn genäht. Die Katze gehört nicht zum Originalmuster, sondern wurde von Brenda hinzugefügt. Es ist kaum zu glauben, aber die Katze habe ich erst auf dem Photo gesehen, während des Quiltens ist sie mir nicht aufgefallen. Da stand ich wahrscheinlich zu nah dran, aus der Entfernung ist sie einfacher zu erkennen. Das moderne Quiltmuster “Bauhaus” passte perfekt zu diesem Quilt. Detailbilder gibt es heute leider nicht, aus unerfindlichen Gründen habe ich von diesem Quilt nur das eine Photo.
Wendy made this quilt as a last minute birthday gift for her sister. It is not really obvious from the pictures since there is no reference but this is a kingsize quilt! She did a wonderful job on this project, especially since she put the whole top together in a just a few days, and I quilted it with the pantograph “Fleur de Swirl”.
Diesen Quilt hat Wendy als Last Minute Geschenk für ihre Schwester zum Geburtstag genäht. Auf den Bildern ist das nicht so deutlich zu erkennen, aber das ist ein Kingsize Quilt, also nicht gerade klein. Wendy hat das Top innerhalb weniger Tage zusammengenäht und dabei trotz des Zeitdrucks tadellose Arbeit geleistet. Gequiltet habe ich mit dem Muster “Fleur de Swirl”.
Happy New Year and welcome to 2019! I have a brand new BOM for you this year called “Tuxedo Cats”. There are twelve blocks, each featuring a tuxedo cat in a different pose. The quilt is mostly black and white. The directions are for fusible appliqué, and the finished block size is 10”. The black part of the cat is usually cut in one piece, with additional pieces for the white paws, face, breast and sometimes the tip of the tail. The details are mostly embroidered. I use a very small satin stitch and do my embroidery by machine. I opted for a larger block size than last year but some of the pieces are still quite small (e.g. the eyes and the nose). I don’t mind working with tiny pieces but if that’s not your cup of tea, feel free to embroider them instead.
Ein frohes und gesundes neues Jahr 2019! Auch in diesem Jahr biete ich einen Block des Monats an, den ich „Tuxedo Cats“ getauft habe, wörtlich übersetzt „Katzen im Frack“, aber im Englischen einfach eine Bezeichnung für schwarz-weiße Katzen. Es gibt wieder zwölf Blöcke, jeder mit einem Katzenmotiv. Der ganze Quilt ist überwiegend schwarz-weiß. Die Anleitung ist für Applikationen mit Klebevlies (Vliesofix), die Teile werden also aufgebügelt. Die Blöcke haben eine Größe von 26 cm (ohne Nahtzugabe). Der schwarze Teil des Katzenkörpers wird immer als ein großes Teil geschnitten, die weißen Flecken im Gesicht, an der Brust, den Pfoten und manchmal an der Schwanzspitze sind Extra-Teile, während die weiteren Details dann aufgestickt werden. Ich mache das mit der Maschine in einem ganz engen Zickzackstich. Die Blöcke sind in diesem Jahr schon größer als im letzten, aber einige Teile, z.B. die Nase und die Augen, sind immer noch relativ klein. Mir macht das Arbeiten mit so kleinen Teilen nichts aus, aber wer das nicht so gern mag, kann diese Details natürlich auch aufsticken.
Ich veröffentliche die Blöcke jeweils am Ersten eines Monats, und zwar um 9 Uhr morgens in meiner Zeitzone, also Pacific Standard bzw. Daylight Time. Mitteleuropa ist uns in der Regel neun Stunden voraus. Ich bitte daher um Geduld, wenn die Blöcke erst abends mitteleuropäischer Zeit veröffentlicht werden. Automatische Veröffentlichungen mitten in der Nacht mag ich nicht so gern, im letzten Jahr gab es einmal ein Problem mit den Dateien, und das konnte ich innerhalb weniger Minuten beheben. Das ist mir lieber, als morgens schon Dutzende von Emails vorzufinden, in denen über Probleme geklagt wird. Falls es jedoch irgendwo Probleme gibt, bitte ich um eine Nachricht, damit ich sie umgehend beheben kann.
A new block will be published on the first day of every month at 9 am Pacific Standard/Daylight Time. This means it will already be the second day of the month for some of you. Please be patient and please don’t email me asking when the next block will be published. I don’t like to schedule posts to be published in the middle of the night. Last year there was a problem with one of the pattern files, and I was able to fix it within minutes instead of waking up to dozens of messages complaining about the bug. If you find an issue, then please don’t hesitate to contact me, so I can fix it ASAP.
Each block will be available for free download during the month of its publication. It will be moved to the store section when the next block is published. If you miss a block, you can still purchase it for a small fee. Please do not email me asking me to email you the pattern for free. I will ignore these requests. I only charge $2 per block (and that’s Canadian dollars, so it is even less for you in the US), and I will make bundle packs available again for three or six blocks, once we get there, that will give you an additional discount. Please respect my copyright and don’t pass your copy of the pattern on to your friend who might have missed the free download. This will just result in designers not offering free patterns anymore.
Jeder Block steht für einen Monat zum kostenlosen Download zur Verfügung. Wenn der nächste Block veröffentlicht wird, zieht der vorherige Block in den Pattern Shop um. Wer also einen Block verpasst, kann ihn dort gegen eine geringe Gebühr erwerben. Bitte schickt mir keine Emails, in denen um kostenlose Übersendung eines verpassten Blocks gebeten wird. Diese werden unbeantwortet gelöscht. Ein Block kostet nur $2 (kanadische Dollar, der Kurs ist deutlich günstiger als US Dollar, zum heutigen Tageskurs wären das ca. 1,28€). Es wird auch wieder Bündel mit drei bzw. sechs Blöcken geben, die jeweils noch günstiger sind als die Blöcke zum Einzelpreis. Ich bitte darum, mein Copyright zu respektieren und die Muster nicht an Freunde weiterzugeben, die den kostenlosen Download verpasst haben. Das führt nur dazu, dass niemand mehr freie Muster anbietet.
Jedes Muster enthält die Materialberechnung und Zuschneideanleitung für den gesamten Quilt. Die Anleitung für Block #12 enthält die Anleitung für die Zwischenstreifen und das Zusammennähen des Quilttops. Die Zwischenstreifen (Sashing) sind über Papier genäht und vor allem aus Flying Geese-Einheiten zusammengesetzt.
Each pattern contains fabric requirements and cutting instructions for the whole quilt. Block #12 will have the instructions for the sashing and construction of the top. The sashing is foundation pieced this time and mostly made up of Flying Geese units.
I love to see what others do with my designs. So if you actually make the blocks right away and don’t just collect the patterns for later, please send me a picture. My email address can be found on the last page of every pattern file.

This cute little baby quilt was made by Susan. I love the bright colours and the feature fabric with the birds. The pantograph Susan chose is called “Quackers”, and although the birds in the fabric are not ducks, we thought it was close enough and were both happy with the result.
Diesen süßen Babyquilt hat Susan genäht. Mir gefallen natürlich die bunten Farben sehr gut und auch der Stoff mit den Vögelchen. Das Quiltmuster, das Susan gewählt hat, heißt “Quackers”. Die Vögel auf dem Stoff sind zwar keine Enten, aber wir fanden, das macht nichts, und das Ergebnis gefällt uns beiden sehr gut.
Karen made this reversible quilt as a gift for a boy in her family. The top has baseball themed fabrics, and the back is all about music. And even the quilting design she chose, Turbulence, has a special meaning for her and the recipient. For some reason I only have one picture of the front, and it is quite blurry, sorry about that.

Und auch das von ihr gewählte Quiltmuster, Turbulence, hat eine besondere Bedeutung für sie und den Empfänger des Quilts. Irgendwie muss ich versehentlich Photos gelöscht haben, jedenfalls habe ich von der Vorderseite nur noch eins, und das ist leider ziemlich unscharf, sorry.
“Gift Basket” is a pattern by Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts, and this quilt was pieced and appliquéd by Lisa. She prefers quilting that isn’t too dense, and my focus was on stabilizing the bigger pieces and connecting them with a continuous swirly design.
“Gift Basket” ist ein Muster von Edyta Sitar/Laundry Basket Quilts, und diese Version hat Lisa genäht und appliziert. Beim Quilten mag Lisa es lieber, wenn die Muster nicht zu klein und eng sind, daher habe ich mich bemüht, vor allem die großen Flächen zu stabilisieren und die einzelnen Blöcke mit einem Swirl-Muster miteinander verbunden.
This cute quilt in pink and grey was made by Debbie as a gift for a little girl. Yes, you guessed correctly, the girl’s name is Charlotte, and she will receive this quilt for Christmas. We went all the way with the girly theme by choosing a pretty flower pantograph called “Daisy Duo” and pink thread. The back is soft pink minky.

This cute baby quilt was made by May using the “Hello Baby Elephant” panel. It is a gift for her new granddaughter. The heart pantograph is called “P.S. I Love You” and was just right for this quilt.
