Custom Quilting

Ginger made this Modern Sampler using a duvet cover fabric with pussy willows as her feature fabric. The blocks all have different sizes and are randomly scattered across the white background. For quilting, Ginger asked for a free-motion filler design on the white background and something different on the blocks. The circles in the block design reminded me of the pussy willow fabric, and I resized the design as needed to make it fit. The background filler was inspired by a Matt Wheeler quilt at our quilt guild meeting. When I saw the tiny free motion squares on one of his modern quilts I thought right away that they would be perfect for Ginger’s sampler. So I tried it, and I loved it. And it is much easier to do than meandering because you can cross your previous lines as often as you want to.

Diesen Modern Sampler hat Ginger genäht und als “Feature Fabric” einen Bettbezug mit Weidenkätzchen verwendet. Die Blöcke sind alle verschieden groß und zufällig auf dem weißen Hintergrund verteilt. Sie wollte gern den Hintergrund mit einem Free-Motion-Füllmotiv gequiltet haben und die Blöcke mit einem anderen Muster. Für die Blöcke kam ich ziemlich schnell auf das Design, die Kreise erinnerten mich an die Weidenkätzchen auf dem Stoff, und ich habe die Größe immer nur entsprechend angepasst. Die Inspiration für das Füllmuster kam von Matt Wheeler, der auf unserem Gildetreffen seine Quilts gezeigt hat. Als ich dieses Muster auf einem seiner modernen Quilts sah, wusste ich sofort, dass es genau richtig für Gingers Hintergrund war. Und es ist auch einfacher zu quilten als Stippling, denn man darf die Linien so oft kreuzen, wie man möchte, kann sich also nicht in eine Ecke manövrieren.

I am still working on using up my scraps and made another scrap quilt. Since I got bored of the pattern I changed it a little this time. The basic idea of alternating scraps and background fabric is still the same but I only used two small squares instead of four. It still looks very similar but I had to pay attention when I was sewing. For quilting I started out with diagonal lines through the white squares and then added designs to fill the blocks. This quilt will be donated to the Chilliwack Piecemakers Quilting Guild’s “We Care” Program.

Ich versuche immer noch, meine Reste aufzubrauchen, daher habe ich einen weiteren Restequilt genäht. Allerdings wurde es langweilig, immer das gleiche Muster zu nähen, und ich habe ein bisschen variiert. Die Grundidee ist noch immer die gleiche, Reste und Hintergrundstoff wechseln sich ab, aber bei diesem Quilt habe ich nur zwei kleine Quadrate aneinandergenäht und nicht vier. Das Muster sieht dem Original immer noch sehr ähnlich, aber ich musste beim Nähen schon aufpassen, dass ich nicht durcheinander komme. Gequiltet habe ich zunächst diagonal durch die weißen Quadrate und dann die dadurch entstandenen Blöcke mit weiteren Mustern gefüllt. Diesen Quilt habe ich als Spende für das “We Care” Programm der Chilliwack Piecemakers Quilting Guild genäht.

Janet made this amazing quilt top, and I had a lot of fun quilting it for her. She suggested the design for the diamonds but otherwise let me do what I thought would work. Since the blocks are essentially made up of triangles and there was some negative space to fill on the outside I decided to extend the triangles into the border. Everything is stitched in the ditch as well, so it took quite a while to finish this quilt but I love the result and it was definitely worth all the time I spent on it.

Janet hat dieses Quilt Top genäht, und ich hatte viel Spaß beim Quilten. Sie hat das Design vorgeschlagen, das ich in den Diamonds verwendet habe, aber grundsätzlich hat sie mir freie Hand gelassen, so zu quilten, wie ich es für richtig hielt. Da der ganze Quilt im Grunde aus Dreiecken besteht und der schwarze Hintergrund ja auch irgendwie gefüllt werden musste, habe ich das Dreiecksmuster in den Rand weitergeführt. Außerdem sind alle Teile “in the ditch” gequiltet, was bei der Longarmmaschine ja ein bisschen aufwendiger ist, da man für gerade Linien ein Lineal verwenden muss. Daher hat es eine ganze Weile gedauert, bis ich fertig war, aber ich bin vom Ergebnis begeistert, und die investierte Zeit hat sich auf jeden Fall gelohnt.

2017 is Canada’s 150th birthday year, and the Canadian Quilters Association has organized a special event for the occasion. They will hold a big quilt bee at the Quilt Canada show in Toronto in June. The goal is to make and donate (at least) 1,000 quilts for Ronald McDonald Houses all across Canada. They are collecting  slab blocks with a finished size of 12″, and the only condition is that at least one piece of one of the official Canada 150 celebration fabrics has to be used in each block. Both Chilliwack guilds are making blocks, and some members are even making whole quilt tops. Kate made this twisted Log Cabin top, and I volunteered to quilt it. The red centre pieces were just screaming for maple leaves, that was very obvious from the beginning. As for the rest, I quilted straight lines in the dark areas and free motion swirls and maple leaves in the white areas. 

In diesem Jahr feiern wir Kanadas 150. Geburtstag, und zu diesem Anlass hat die Canadian Quilters Association eine besondere Veranstaltung organisiert. Bei der Quilt Canada Show in Toronto im Juni wird ein großes Quilt Bee stattfinden. Das Ziel ist, (mindestens) 1.000 Quilts zu nähen, die dann an Ronald McDonald Häuser überall in Kanada gespendet werden. Dafür werden sog. “Slab Blöcke” mit einer fertigen Größe von 12″ gesammelt. Die einzige Bedingung ist, dass jeder Block mindestens ein Stück von einem der offiziellen 150 Jahre Kanada Stoffe enthalten muss. Beide Gilden in Chilliwack beteiligen sich an der Aktion, und manche Mitglieder nähen nicht nur einzelne Blöcke, sondern ganze Quilttops. Kate hat dieses Twisted Log Cabin Top genäht, und ich habe angeboten, es für sie zu quilten. Die roten Mittelstücke riefen von Anfang an nach Ahornblättern, das war mir sofort klar. Dann habe ich die dunklen und hellen Regionen unterschiedlich gequiltet, in den dunklen Flächen gerade Linien, in den hellen Flächen Free Motion Swirls und Ahornblätter.
