Wow, it’s February already! Time to replace January’s Snowman! February means Valentine’s Day, so I played around with hearts and flower designs. But there is only so much you can do with 2″ squares and limited space, and I quickly abandoned any complicated ideas about roses and such. I ended up with a basic heart in red and pink on a tan background. Sometimes less is more, and in this case I agree. I enjoyed playing with all my pretty pink and red scraps, and I had fun quilting. I love free motion feathers as a background filler, they are much more satisfying than just meandering. I hope you enjoy this little pattern too, once again it is available for free download. Now keep your fingers crossed that I can come up with something for March!

Und schon ist es Februar! Und es wird Zeit, den Januar Schneemann von der Wand zu nehmen. Februar bedeutet Valentinstag, und daher habe ich mit Herzen und Blumen herumgespielt. Aber mit 5 cm großen Quadraten und begrenztem Platz kann man der Phantasie nicht wirklich freien Lauf lassen, und ich habe ziemlich schnell meine komplizierten Ideen von Rosen und ähnlichen Dingen verworfen. Herausgekommen ist nun ein recht einfaches Herz in rot und pink auf beigem Hintergrund. Manchmal ist weniger eben doch mehr, und in diesem Fall war das so. Ich hatte viel Spaß, mit all den schönen Resten in pink und rot herumzuspielen, und auch mit dem Quilten bin ich zufrieden. Ich liebe Free Motion Feathers als Füllmuster für den Hintergrund, das sieht viel schöner aus als nur Meandering. Das Muster steht wieder als freier Download zur Verfügung. Und jetzt bitte die Daumen drücken, dass mir auch für März etwas einfällt.

What I am working on: Scrap Quilt

I made another scrap quilt with my favourite pattern. It is a great way to use up all my leftovers, and it looks more complicated than it is. I usually put it together in rows but for quilting I decided to treat the sixteen small squares as one block and the rest as sashing with different designs. I didn’t want a traditional feather border, I thought it would be a little too much for the scrappy design, so I went with waves and bubbles instead. This quilt will be donated to the Chilliwack Quilters Guild’s “We Care” Program.

Ich habe einen weiteren Restequilt nach meinem bewährten Lieblingsmuster genäht. Es eignet sich hervorragend für all die Reste, die sich so ansammeln, und es sieht viel komplizierter aus als es ist. Ich nähe das Muster immer in Reihen, aber zum Quilten habe ich beschlossen, die sechzehn kleinen Quadrate als einen Block zu betrachten und den Rest als das Sashing drumherum. Blöcke, Sashing und Cornerstones haben jeweils ein eigenes Quiltmuster bekommen. Für den breiten Rand wollte ich nichts Traditionelles, also keine Federn oder ähnliches, das erschien mir dann doch zuviel für einen Restequilt, also wurden es Wellenlinien und Bubbles. Diesen Quilt habe ich als Spendenquilt für das “We Care” Programm der Chilliwack Quilters Guild genäht.

Block/Pattern of the Month

January Snowman

Hello, 2017! Happy New Year! I am sure you are all determined to finish your UFO’s this year and not start any new projects until you do so… right? I have a few projects that I need to finish but I am still pretty good in the UFO department. And a new small project here and there doesn’t hurt. Remember the Dancing Garland wall hanging I made before Christmas? I have just the right wall spot for it, it covers up some weird little nook in our hallway, I have no idea what that is for. So now that Christmas is over I thought it would be nice to have a different wall hanging there. And I also liked that I could use all my 2″ scraps for this project. I wondered if I could come up with a design for January that would also use 2″ squares and ended up with this funny snowman. I called it “January Snowman”, hoping I will be able to come up with a design for every month this year. I already have an idea for February but after that… who knows. I have uploaded the pattern and made it available for free download. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Frohes Neues Jahr 2017! Ich bin mir sicher, dass alle meine Leser fest entschlossen sind, in diesem Jahr ihre UFOs abzuarbeiten und keine neuen Projekte zu starten, bevor nicht alles fertig ist, oder? Ich habe zwar auch eine Handvoll Projekte, die noch nicht vollendet sind, aber nach wie vor habe ich kaum UFOS. Und ab und zu ein neues kleines Projekt kann ja auch nicht schaden. Vor Weihnachten hatte ich ja den Dancing Garland Wandbehang genäht. Und für diesen hat sich auch gleich der richtige Platz an der Wand gefunden. Im Flur haben wir so eine seltsame winzige Nische, mit der wusste ich nichts anzufangen, und die wird von dem Wandbehang wunderbar verdeckt. Nachdem Weihnachten nun vorbei ist und mir auch gut gefallen hat, dass ich für das Projekt meine Reste verwenden konnte, überlegte ich, ob mir nicht für Januar ein anderes Design einfallen würde, das sich ebenfalls aus 2″ Quadraten herstellen lässt. Dabei kam dieser lustige Schneemann heraus. Ich habe ihn großspurig “Januar Schneemann” genannt und hoffe, dass mir für jeden Monat des Jahres ein Design einfallen wird. Für Februar habe ich schon eine Idee, aber danach… wir werden sehen. Die Anleitung steht als kostenloser Download zur Verfügung. Ich hoffe, der fröhliche Schneemann gefällt Euch auch so gut wie mir.

Hollywood

Dalle made this black, white and tan quilt that she calls “Hollywood”. The top is very busy, and the pictures are definitely the focus, the quilting needs to take a step back here. We discussed different patterns for the different areas and ended up with separate designs for the blocks, sashing, cornerstones and borders. The backing is tan Fireside, and the quilting shows up very well here… so well that when Dalle picked up the quilt she joked she would have to put the label on the front because the back would be the new front.

Dalle brachte mir diesen Quilt in schwarz, weiß und beige, dem sie den Namen “Hollywood” gab. Das Top ist durch die verwendeten Stoffe recht unruhig, und die Betonung liegt auf den Bildern, so dass das Quilten hier in den Hintergrund treten musste. Wir diskutierten verschiedene Muster und fanden schließlich unterschiedliche Designs für die Blöcke, das Sashing, die Cornerstones und den Rand. Die Rückseite ist Fireside, und hier kann man die Quiltmuster sehr gut erkennen… so gut, dass Dalle, als sie den Quilt abholte, scherzhaft meinte, sie würde das Label nun auf die Vorderseite nähen müssen, da die Rückseite die neue Vorderseite wäre.

Dancing Garland

Last week I shared a free pattern of a Christmas tree wall hanging. It kept creeping back into my mind, and I finally gave in on Saturday and started digging through my stash. I usually cut up all my leftovers into squares, and one size is 2″, so I had most of the squares needed for the little quilt already cut. I even had the bigger ones that I needed for the half square triangles. It was really fast to put the top together, and I quilted it this week and put the binding on. I am quite happy with the way it turned out. A fast, fun and easy project!

Letzte Woche hatte ich ja über ein freies Muster zum Download geschrieben, und das ging mir dann hinterher nicht mehr aus dem Kopf. Also habe ich am Sonnabend begonnen, mich durch meine Reste zu wühlen. Ich schneide ja kleinere Reste immer gleich in Quadrate, und eine der Größen, die ich “vorrätig” habe, ist 2″, daher musste ich für den Quilt fast gar nichts mehr zuschneiden. Ich hatte selbst von den größeren, die ich für die Half Square Triangles brauchte, genug. Es dauerte gar nicht lange, und das Top war fertig. Ich habe es gleich diese Woche noch gequiltet und das Binding genäht, und es gefällt mir richtig gut. Schnell und einfach, und es hat jede Menge Spaß gemacht.

Scrappy Log Cabin

Kathy made this Scrappy Log Cabin quilt and chose a smaller free motion meander for the blocks. For the border she requested “something with feathers” but a carefully drafted traditional feather border winding its way around the quilt seemed to be too much. So we decided to go with a free motion all over feather filler, and I am really happy with the way it turned out. I had so much fun filling the background with feathers in all directions.

Kathy brachte mir diesen Scrappy Log Cabin Quilt und wählte ein Free Motion Meander Muster für die Blöcke aus. Für den Rand wollte sie gern “etwas mit Federn” haben, aber ein traditioneller Federrand, der sich einmal um den Quilt herumwindet, erschien ihr dann doch zuviel. Also haben wir uns auf Free Motion Federn als Füllmuster geeinigt, und ich bin sehr zufrieden damit. Es hat richtig Spaß gemacht, den ganzen Hintergrund mit Federn in allen Richtungen zu füllen.

Christmas Trees

Bonnie made this wonderful Christmas wall hanging, and she knew exactly how she wanted it quilted: small loops in the background and bigger loops on the trees. I think it was an excellent choice, doesn’t this look like decorated Christmas trees? And I love the fabric choice for the tree in the centre, it adds so much to the design.

Bonnie hat diesen Weihnachtswandbehang genäht, und sie hatte auch eine genaue Vorstellung davon, wie sie ihn gequiltet haben wollte: kleine Loops im Hintergrund und größere Loops auf den Bäumen. Das war eine richtig gute Idee, sieht das nicht aus wie geschmückte Weihnachtsbäume? Und der Baum in der Mitte gefällt mir besonders gut, die Stoffwahl gibt dem Design den richtigen Pep.
