My Happy Place Row Along – Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone EQ

When I heard the theme for this year’s Row Along I didn’t have to think about it at all. Yellowstone National Park is my happy place and has been for over a decade. I especially enjoy watching the geysers and observing the changes in geothermal activity from year to year. And I also love the wildlife, the hikes, the beautiful views and the general peaceful feeling of the park. With millions of visitors every year Yellowstone might not feel very peaceful to the average visitor but you just need to get off the beaten path. As soon as you get away from the big crowds it is a wonderful place to visit with lots of things to see and do.

Yellowstone My Happy Place Row

Yellowstone Wall Hanging

I started my design with Old Faithful Geyser and the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River. The most difficult part of the whole process was trying to set up the background just right, to make it go smoothly from the geyser area to the canyon view. I knew that I wanted to add a bison and bison calf but then thought there was something missing and added Grand Prismatic Spring on the left. Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest hot spring in the US, and the colours are created by mats of thermophile bacteria.

Northcott Fabrics generously offered their fabrics to all the designers, and we could choose anything from their current collections for our projects. Their “Naturescapes” lines were exactly what I needed for my row, and I chose four fabrics for the background. The sky, trees and rocks were just perfect for Yellowstone’s rugged landscape. Thank you, Northcott, for your beautiful fabrics. I turned my row into a wall hanging and registered it for our quilt show in October. The pattern for the row will be available for free download for a week. Afterwards the pattern for the complete wall hanging will be available for purchase. If you know me, you know that I am fond of tiny appliqué pieces, and I appliquéd every piece of my design that isn’t marked as embroidery. Some of those pieces are very small, and if you don’t enjoy working with them, you can always embroider the details.

Edit: It’s been more than a week, and I moved the pattern over to the store today where it will be available for purchase. It includes instructions for a complete wall hanging.

Christmas is Coming

“Christmas is Coming” is a pattern by local designer Barb Cherniwchan of Coach House Designs. This is Brenda’s version, and she wasn’t happy with the nutcracker’s face and made some changes along the way. Didn’t he turn out adorable? The quilt is assembled in rows, from snowflakes in the top row to wrapped gifts at the bottom. I tried to echo these designs in the background quilting and added a little texture to the motifs themselves. I don’t really need Christmas to come just yet but Brenda will sure be ready this year.

Christmas Is Coming

Sneak Peek

What I Am Working On: Pansies

Technically I am still working on the square dance quilt. I just need one more border but this one has a complicated design, and I worked on it all weekend in EQ (Electric Quilt 8 = quilt design software). And on Sunday night I was finally done, saved the project one last time and closed it. And when I opened it again I received the “unreadable polygon” error. All my work is just gone, and I have to start over. Yes, I did back up the file but this error message means that there was some kind of drawing error somewhere that the program can’t resolve when loading the project file, and everything that would be loaded after the drawing error is just gone forever and cannot be recovered. And what annoys me most is that this error has been around for a long time. Of course I contacted EQ Tech Support, and they are telling me they are trying to fix this but it is extremely difficult. Well, I have never personally encountered this error before but a quick search online shows posts from 2007 about wiped out projects with unreadable polygon. That’s 11 years! Sorry, but you can’t tell me that you can’t fix a major error that wipes out a whole project in more than a decade. It seems to me that this is just not important to them because it so rarely happens.

Anyway, sorry about the rant but I was really upset about losing all my work. I was planning on actually sewing the border this week but had to come up with a backup plan. I remembered the postcards I made for Quilt Canada, with the pansies and the snowdrops. Back then I thought it would be really nice to turn these into wall hangings. They are both lovely designs but I am sure no one wants to fiddle with dozen of very tiny pieces. I had already worked on the designs and “just” needed to actually make the samples. I started with the pansies and put the block together, it just needs stitching around the pieces. And I thought it would be more efficient to assemble the snowdrops as well and then sew both blocks at once. Guess what happened when I tried to open the snowdrops design file in EQ… yep, you are right, another “unreadable polygon” error. This one is not as bad as I still have the original postcard file and just need to resize and add the borders but still… I have been using EQ for 18 years without any issues, and now I lose two files in one week? If you read this far, thank you for listening to my rant, and if not, I don’t blame you but I needed to get it out of my system. I hope that you at least enjoy the pretty pansies, they will be available as a pattern as soon as I find the time.

Coastal Bliss

“Coastal Bliss” is a quilt by Canadian designer Shania Sunga, you might remember her “Canadian Mystery Quilt” for Canada’s 150th anniversary last year. It uses a combination of patchwork, appliqué and fabrics that Shania designed for this project. This version was made by Naida. When I saw the wavy pattern of the border fabric, it reminded me of my “Fantasy Flames” pantograph, and that’s what we chose for Naida’s quilt. With a little imagination the flames could also be waves, and they pick up the border fabric design nicely.

Coastal Bliss

Quilt Patch Flowers

This pretty quilt was made by Brenda, using a pattern from the Quilt Patch Pattern Company. I figured out a design for the checkerboard panels that I could stitch without starting and stopping. This always requires a little planning but is actually not as difficult as it sounds. For the flower panels, I filled the background with several designs and only quilted the flowers as much/little as necessary which gives them a nice three-dimensional look. I am very happy with the way this quilt turned out.

Quilt Patch Flowers

New Pattern: Frosty Times Placemats

Okay, I have to admit that this pattern isn’t really new, at least the English version has been around for a while, I just never had the time to write the German pattern. But now I finally managed to get it done, and since the snowman placemats haven’t been featured on the blog before, I am showing them off today. Maybe thinking about winter and snowmen will cool us down a little in this heat. Fabric requirements and instructions are for four placemats. Placement guides and templates are included for the snowman pictured below and also for a mirror image version.

Frosty Times

Digiprove

Quilts for Teachers

Lori made these two quilts as year end gifts for two of her children’s teachers. Many of the blocks have special meanings, and Lori chose stars and musical notes as quilting designs with the two teachers in mind. There are so many cute details, I just love these quilts! And I am sure the recipients loved them even more. Very thoughtful and beautiful handmade gifts!

Teacher Quilt 1
Teacher Quilt 2

Personal Projects

Taminations

I finished the centre part of the square dance quilt last night. I won’t be able to work on it this weekend because… I will be square dancing 🙂 You are probably wondering about the blocks that I placed between the dancing couples. If you are a serious square dancer, you know what they are, otherwise not so much. There is a website called “Taminations” that explains all the different moves in square dancing, from Basic up to the Challenge levels. It has animations for all the different positions and it a very helpful resource for square dancers. Each of the four couples is represented by a colour, and the boys and girls positions are represented by different shapes. I took ten different formations and made them into blocks. The animations also show when dancers are supposed to touch hands, represented by small circles, and my Scan N Cut did a great job cutting all these tiny shapes. The quilt will have several borders, so I am not even close to being done.

Autumn Nights

“Autumn Nights” is a pattern by Border Creek Station and was featured in Quilt Sampler Magazine in 2010. This version was made by Joan. The acorn and oak leaves appliqué blocks were all done by hand.  The pictures turned out a little blurry because of all the black but I think you will at least get an idea of what I did for quilting, sorry about that. The quilt looks much better in reality.

Autumn Nights

Miscellaneous

Brother Scan N Cut

I have wanted a fabric cutter for years, and I finally bought one! I am mostly going to use it to cut appliqué pieces, and I wanted it to be able to handle my own designs, so I didn’t even consider the Accuquilt machines. Several of my German friends have a Brother Scan N Cut, and after some research that’s what I ordered as well. And boy, do I love it! I should have bought it a long time ago, especially since I am fond of intricate designs with tiny pieces. Here is an example of what I am working on right now, a square dance quilt. If you know me personally, then you are probably aware that if I am not quilting chances are I will be square dancing. The quilt will have four blocks with dancing couples (a full square), and it took the machine less than two minutes to cut out the dancers. It would have taken me forever to do it by hand, and it wouldn’t have looked half as nice. I am very happy with my new toy 🙂

Dancers
