Block/Pattern of the Month

Tuxedo Cats BOM – Block #1

Happy New Year and welcome to 2019! I have a brand new BOM for you this year called “Tuxedo Cats”. There are twelve blocks, each featuring a tuxedo cat in a different pose. The quilt is mostly black and white. The directions are for fusible appliqué, and the finished block size is 10”. The black part of the cat is usually cut in one piece, with additional pieces for the white paws, face, breast and sometimes the tip of the tail. The details are mostly embroidered. I use a very small satin stitch and do my embroidery by machine. I opted for a larger block size than last year but some of the pieces are still quite small (e.g. the eyes and the nose). I don’t mind working with tiny pieces but if that’s not your cup of tea, feel free to embroider them instead.

Daylight Time.

A new block will be published on the first day of every month at 9 am Pacific Standard/Daylight Time. This means it will already be the second day of the month for some of you. Please be patient and please don’t email me asking when the next block will be published. I don’t like to schedule posts to be published in the middle of the night. Last year there was a problem with one of the pattern files, and I was able to fix it within minutes instead of waking up to dozens of messages complaining about the bug. If you find an issue, then please don’t hesitate to contact me, so I can fix it ASAP.

Each block will be available for free download during the month of its publication. It will be moved to the store section when the next block is published. If you miss a block, you can still purchase it for a small fee. Please do not email me asking me to email you the pattern for free. I will ignore these requests. I only charge $2 per block (and that’s Canadian dollars, so it is even less for you in the US), and I will make bundle packs available again for three or six blocks, once we get there, that will give you an additional discount. Please respect my copyright and don’t pass your copy of the pattern on to your friend who might have missed the free download. This will just result in designers not offering free patterns anymore.

Each pattern contains fabric requirements and cutting instructions for the whole quilt. Block #12 will have the instructions for the sashing and construction of the top. The sashing is foundation pieced this time and mostly made up of Flying Geese units.

I love to see what others do with my designs. So if you actually make the blocks right away and don’t just collect the patterns for later, please send me a picture. My email address can be found on the last page of every pattern file.

EDIT: The month of free download is over, and the block has moved to the pattern store where it is now available for purchase.

Have A Wonderful Christmas

My plan was to only take time off between Christmas and New Year’s Day. And then WordPress decided it was a good idea to launch a major update right before the holidays. My site hasn’t updated yet but I expect my hosting company to update within the next 24 hours and am bracing myself for trouble. The changes will mostly affect me as they are changing the post editor to a completely different version. But who knows how it might influence other parts of the website and what might not be working anymore after the update. I hope to fix potential bugs quickly, luckily my computer expert son is already home for the holidays. So I have decided to stop blogging until the new year and concentrate on making sure the website is in working order. Have a wonderful Christmas [or insert holiday that you celebrate here], and I will see you in 2019 for the first block of the brand new Tuxedo Cats BOM!

Christmas Forest Card 2018

New Pattern: Puppy Paws

Guess what… all the customer quilts that needed to be finished before Christmas are done. After working extra shifts in November I actually finished earlier than expected. I used the extra time to work on my patterns, and today I present the first new pattern in quite a while. I made the “Puppy Paws” wall hanging as a gift for a dog lover. It can easily be used as a table runner too and will appeal to dog lovers of all ages. I especially like the dog bone border and I added even more bones while quilting. The pattern will be available with a discount until December 24, 2018, enter the code PUPPY during checkout for 20% off.

Digiprove

Gift Basket

“Gift Basket” is a pattern by Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts, and this quilt was pieced and appliquéd by Lisa. She prefers quilting that isn’t too dense, and my focus was on stabilizing the bigger pieces and connecting them with a continuous swirly design.

Baskets

Virtual Cookie Exchange: German Butter Cookies or Have You Ever Skinned Almonds?

We all probably have some childhood memories that make Christmas special, and as funny as it sounds, skinning almonds is one of mine. I have always found it fascinating that blanching almonds in boiling water loosens the skin and that you can squeeze them out after they cool down. Of course we didn’t just quietly squeeze them out of their skins back then, my brother, my sister and I shot them all across the kitchen and at each other until my mom intervened. To this day it doesn’t feel like Christmas until I am skinning almonds, and it will probably not surprise you that these cookies are always the first I make each year. They are rather simple butter cookies but sometimes less is more, and these taste amazing. If you find my way of decorating them with just some egg yolk and an almond too boring, you can decorate them any way you please, of course.

German Butter Cookies

A few words of caution/disclaimer: This is a German recipe. Germans measure only liquids by volume, solid ingredients are measured by weight. And everything is metric, of course. With the help of the internet I have provided the imperial measurements but there is no guarantee these are correct… it’s the internet after all. So if a number looks suspicious to you, please double check the math. Another difference are North American ranges. Having to choose between “bake” and “broil” doesn’t really translate to German full convection ovens. So please keep an eye on the cookies and decide for yourself if they need longer or are done faster in your oven than required by the recipe.

And I also have a little virtual cookie Christmas gift for all of you. When I signed up for this blog hop a vision of a gingerbread man popped into my head. And he made himself at home in there and also invited a gingerbread woman, and I turned them both into mug rugs and called them Ginger and Fred. The pattern is available for free download until Sunday, I will move it to the shop on Monday. This way people who don’t have time during the week to hop from blog to blog will also have a chance to download the pattern. Have a great holiday season and thank you for stopping by today.

Edit: Ginger & Fred moved over to the store and are available for purchase now, if you missed the free download.

Quilt Show

Quilt Show 2018

As you can probably tell by the silence, the Christmas rush is in full swing, and I have no time for blogging. I have come to the conclusion that I will never find the time to post pictures from the quilt show but here are some videos instead. Our guild member Norma H. took pictures of everything and spent a lot of time turning them into videos and uploading them to Youtube. So grab a cup of coffee and enjoy! And thank you, Norma, for all the work you put into this.

Colourful Cats

This quilt for cat lovers was designed and made by Cynthia using colourful batik fabrics. Each block features a different cat motif, and I chose two different filler designs, alternating them to quilt the background. The cat motifs are just outlined, and I quilted the sashing with a simple swirl design. The outside borders were so narrow that I decided stitching in the ditch was enough.

Colourful Cats

Allemande Left

And here is – finally – the finished square dance quilt. I managed to take a few pictures while it was hanging in the show last weekend. I am very happy with the way it turned out.

Square Dance Quilt – The Finished Top

I finally finished the top of the square dance quilt. It was the sheet music border that took forever, first it was my EQ program crashing on me and losing all my work, then it was figuring out how to actually do it. And I wouldn’t want to attempt it again, it took a lot of time to get it right. My biggest problem was how to create the five line staff all around the border. I didn’t want to cut narrow strips of fabric and I didn’t want to embroider them either… doing inches and inches of satin stitch didn’t really appeal to me. I was experimenting with couching and hand embroidery thread when I came across some black 1/8″ wide ribbon and it occurred to me that this might just be what I needed. It was still a lot of work to sew on yards and yards of ribbon (and getting it all as straight and parallel as possible) but it worked well and I am happy with the result. Now I just need to find the time to actually quilt one of my own projects.

Allemande Left Finished Top

Hudson’s Memory Quilt

Ginger made this quilt for her little granddaughter, using her baby clothes to make the blocks. It was designed to fit Hudson’s “big girl” bed. I couldn’t quilt over some of the elements, for example the button tabs and embellishments, therefore we couldn’t use a pantograph. We decided to go with a free motion allover design, this way I could avoid areas that would give me trouble and quilt around them. I was trying to go with a heart pattern at first but it just didn’t look right, and I finally settled on flowers.

Hudson's Memory Quilt
