Once Upon A Story Row Along – Bremen Town Musicians

Bremen Town Musicians EQ

I found this year’s Row Along theme a little more difficult than last year’s. I am not really familiar with any North American nursery rhymes, and they don’t make a lot of sense if you don’t grow up with them. Well, nursery rhymes don’t make a whole lot of sense in general, I guess 😉 Anyway, I started thinking about fairy tales, being German I grew up with the Grimm Brothers and their stories. Unfortunately a lot of these stories have been turned into Disney movies, and I knew I needed to stay away from those. I finally chose the “Bremen Town Musicians” for my row. Not only is this a very German story (Bremen is a city in northern Germany) but the animals on top of each other also worked very well with the row format. If you are not familiar with the story, you can find an English version here.

Bremen Town Musicians Row

My row shows the four animals outside the cottage in the forest as they are climbing on top of each other, getting ready to drive the robbers out and chase them away. It is all fusible appliqué with a machine blanket stitch. I then added two outside borders to turn it into a wall hanging which I registered for our local quilt show in October.

Northcott Fabrics generously offered their fabrics to all the designers again this year, and we could choose anything from their current collections for our projects. I chose three fabrics this time, the night sky, the forest floor and the cottage wall. Thank you, Northcott, for your beautiful fabrics. The pattern for the row will be available for free download for a week. Afterwards the pattern for the complete wall hanging will be available for purchase. If you know me, you know that I am fond of tiny appliqué pieces, and I appliquéd every piece of my design that isn’t marked as embroidery. Some of those pieces are very small, and if you don’t enjoy working with them, you can always embroider the details.

Tuxedo Cats BOM – Block #9

A big thank you to all of you for your patience and especially those who took the time to leave a comment. I know that I don’t owe anybody anything but the internet can be a weird place. Being a perfectionist and overachiever I realize that I am usually putting more pressure on myself than necessary, so not publishing the block on time is a big thing for me. Progress, I guess 🙂 And thanks for all the good wishes for my son. He is already starting his third year at the university, time sure flies. He just added math as a second major, “for fun”. I am sure that anyone who thinks college level math is fun, will do just fine. Speaking of fun, our Tuxedo Cat has his Ginger Cat buddy with him in September’s free pattern. Those two must be watching something interesting… probably birds or squirrels. The pattern will be available for free download until the end of the month and move to the store section when the October block is published.

EDIT: The month of free download is over, and the block has moved to the pattern store where it is now available for purchase.

Anne of Green Gables

It doesn’t get more Canadian than Anne of Green Gables! Darlene purchased these kits for five Anne-themed wall hangings in a quilt shop on Prince Edward Island, Anne’s home province. She decided to combine the five blocks into one big quilt, and I was thrilled when she asked me to quilt it for her. I had a blast coming up with different designs to enhance the background. It was a bit tricky quilting through all those layers of fusible, and I had to make a few compromises to make it work but it ended up being one of my favourite projects ever. For some reason I didn’t take a picture of the whole quilt but you wouldn’t be able to see all the details anyway.

Judy Niemeyer Flower Garden

Lynne made this quilt designed by Judy Niemeyer in a class. This isn’t her first Judy Niemeyer project but the first that has appliqué. She asked for an overall quilting pattern and chose the design “Ginger Flower” for her quilt. This is a huge quilt that was difficult to photograph, and the pictures don’t do it justice at all but this was the best I could do.

Tuxedo Cats BOM – Block #8

I hope you are all enjoying your summer and doing fun things while the weather is good. Or stay inside and sew, if it gets too hot. I seem to be allergic to something and spend a lot of time hiding inside, hoping we will either figure out what’s going on or it will just go away. But looking on the bright side, I am getting a lot of sewing done and finally feel I am accomplishing something. I am actually writing this a week in advance… a whole week, that’s absolutely unheard of 🙂 This month’s block shows a stretching kitty, probably just woke up from a nap. It will be available for free until the end of August but please make sure you download right away as I am not sure yet about the timing for next month’s block. My son will be moving from off campus to a dorm room for the next term, and we will be busy Labour Day weekend helping him move. I might have to post the September block earlier or later, but I will definitely announce in advance what I am going to do.

Scrap Crazy

For this quilt, Beverly was determined to use up scraps and orphan blocks. The top is mostly organized and within a certain colour scheme, and she did a lot of crazy-quilt-style embroidery. But for the back she decided that anything would go… large and small scraps, pieced, appliquéd and embroidered orphan blocks – whatever was at hand went into it. I had to laugh when she warned me before she pulled it out of her bag. Yes, it certainly was quite wild but at least she found a use for all these leftovers. I quilted it with the pantograph “Celtic Scroll”, this was definitely a quilt that didn’t need a lot of intricate quilting.

Animal Adventure

Edit: I am not sure why I am suddenly overwhelmed by people asking me for the pattern. I am assuming someone is promoting the Animal Adventure pattern somewhere and linking to my page. I am NOT the designer of this pattern. I only sell my own patterns and only as downloads, and I don’t do embroidery designs. My main business is longarm quilting, and this was a quilt I quilted for a customer. Sorry, but I don’t know where to purchase this pattern. Maybe a Google search can help.

This adorable animal quilt was made by Beverly as a gift for her grandson. It has lots of embroidery and didn’t need much quilting, I just stitched around the blocks to stabilize everything and tried to stay away from the motifs. I couldn’t decide which details to show as they are all so cute, so there are lots of detail pictures today.

Tuxedo Cats BOM – Block #7

Happy Canada Day! If you are celebrating this holiday, I hope you have some fun things planned for today. The weather here is supposed to be lovely, warm and sunny but not too hot. If you are in Europe, stay cool und hydrate. I thought it was hot when I was visiting, I am sure glad I am missing this heatwave. We had some cool and rainy days this past week but I am not complaining, I’ll take rain over heat any day.

Tuxedo Cat #7

With today’s block we are already more than halfway through this year’s block of the month. After feeling overwhelmed for months I was wondering if I should do another BOM next year, and I am still a little undecided but ideas keep popping into my head. Maybe that’s a sign 🙂 I have been feeling more organized for the past two weeks, and I am getting more things done without feeling stressed. But back to the Tuxedo Cats, as always, this block will be available for free download until the end of the month and then move over to the store section when the August block is published.

EDIT: The month of free download is over, and the block has moved to the pattern store where it is now available for purchase.

Little Birdies Growth Chart

This super cute wall hanging was made by Wendy. There will be a tape measure added to the tree trunk, and it will become a growth chart. What a wonderful gift for a baby shower! The appliqué is wool, and the details are embroidered. I only stitched around the shapes and filled the background with swirls. An adorable project, and lots of fun to work on.

Tuxedo Cats BOM – Block #6

June has arrived, and summer is here. Can you believe that we are already halfway through the Tuxedo Cats blocks? The months have just been flying by. I will be in Germany when you read this, and I have made changes to my schedule for when I return, and hopefully I will feel less stressed and have a little more time to do some sewing. Here is this month’s kitty, providing another dot of colour with her red water bowl. The pattern is available for free download until the end of the month and will move over to the store on Canada Day with the release of the seventh block.
