Darlene made this lap quilt as a birthday gift for her son and asked me to quilt it for her. She just wanted a not too small meander which was quick and easy to do. I love the colours in this quilt, they remind me of chocolate and caramel, it looks cozy and comforting.

Sie wollte nur ein nicht zu kleines Meander-Muster, und das ließ sich schnell und einfach erledigen. Die Farbkombination gefällt mir gut und erinnert mich an Schokolade und Karamell, der Quilt vermittelt Wärme und Gemütlichkeit.
I came across another cute St. Patrick’s Day project this week, a Shamrock Table Runner designed by Joan Ford of Hummingbird Highway for the Bernina We All Sew blog. Her instructions combine piecing and appliqué to create the shamrocks, and you get to use your green scraps again, yay. That’s always a good reason to start yet another project, right? The tutorial has lots of pictures, and her explanations are easy to follow. This is a project that can easily be finished in time for St. Patrick’s Day.
Ich habe noch ein weiteres St. Patrick’s Day Projekt gefunden, das mir gut gefällt, einen Shamrock Tischläufer, den Joan Ford/Hummingbird Highway für den Bernina We All Sew Blog entworfen hat. Ihre Shamrocks sind eine Kombination aus Patchwork und Applikation und verwenden grüne Reste. Resteverwertung ist doch immer eine gute Ausrede, um ein neues Projekt anzufangen, oder? Das Tutorial ist auf Englisch und in Inch, aber mit vielen Bildern. Der Tischläufer lässt sich ganz sicher noch vor St. Patrick’s Day fertigstellen.
It took me a while to realize that a pattern for March was actually not that difficult with St. Patrick’s Day coming up. Once I had that idea drafting the pattern was easy. I just didn’t have time to make a sample but in a mad rush finished everything yesterday. I put a hint of an Irish Chain into the corners of the wall hanging and quilted the background in diagonal lines. Scroll down for the link to the free download. Now on to April’s pattern, I am determined to finish a little earlier next month.
Es hat eine ganze Weile gedauert, bis ich die zündende Idee für März hatte. Dabei war das eigentlich gar nicht so schwierig. Aber St. Patrick’s Day ist in Deutschland ja im Gegensatz zu Nordamerika keine große Sache, daher hatte ich das zuerst gar nicht auf der Rechnung. Das Pattern selbst war dann kein Problem mehr, ich hatte bloß keine Zeit zum Nähen und habe dann gestern einen flotten Endspurt hingelegt und alles gerade noch rechtzeitig beendet. In den Ecken findet sich die Andeutung einer Irish Chain, daher habe ich den Hintergrund in diagonalen Linien gequiltet. Wie immer steht die Anleitung zum Download zur Verfügung. Und ich werde gleich anfangen, mir Gedanken über das Pattern für April zu machen, noch so eine Last Minute Punktlandung möchte ich lieber vermeiden.

Three weeks ago I wrote a post about auditioning pantographs, and I used Carol’s Haberdashery quilt as an example in the pictures. And today I am going to show the result. I never even suggested the “Honey Drops” pantograph to her, I thought it was quite obvious in the picture that it didn’t work for her quilt. The “Turbulence” pantograph would have worked but I thought it was a little boring, it works better with more complicated geometrical blocks. I let Carol choose without telling her what I was thinking, and to my delight she picked what I would have picked, the “Ginger Star” pantograph. Carol brought the Haberdashery fabric back from the UK, and the whimsical star design complements it nicely.
Vor drei Wochen hatte ich beschrieben, wie ich Quiltmuster mit Hilfe von durchsichtiger Folie ausprobiere. Als Beispiel dafür hatte ich Carols Haberdashery Quilt verwendet. Und heute zeige ich nun das Ergebnis. Das erste Muster, “Honey Drops”, hatte ich ihr gar nicht erst gezeigt, ich fand, dass das Bild ganz klar zeigte, dass es überhaupt nicht passt. Das zweite Muster, “Turbulence”, hätte man nehmen können, aber es wäre nicht meine erste Wahl gewesen, es funktioniert meiner Meinung nach besser mit komplizierteren geometrischen Blöcken. Ich ließ Carol wählen, ohne ihr eine Empfehlung zu geben, und es hat mich sehr gefreut, dass sie sich für das dritte Muster, “Ginger Star”, entschied, das hätte ich auch genommen. Den Haberdashery Stoff hat Carol aus England mitgebracht, und das unkonventionelle Sternenmuster passt gut dazu.
I am so busy quilting right now that I don’t really have time for elaborate blog posts. And my patterns are on the backburner again. I am beginning to think I will never have the time to get those ready. Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining, I love quilting, and I don’t mind doing it all day. But I didn’t have time to look for a free pattern to share, and I am not even sure if I will manage to get my March pattern done until Wednesday. Here is something else instead that is very useful. If you are like me and a math person, then you can stop reading right away because none of this will be new to you and you will think it is all obvious anyway. But there are many quilters out there who find yardage requirement calculations confusing and intimidating, and if you are one of them, then this will be very helpful. Debora of Studio Dragonfly Quilts makes understanding the math behind quilt borders very easy, and she created a handy flow chart (availabe for free download) that will simplify things even more. Just measure your quilt top and put the numbers into the chart. Check it out, I think it’s awesome. But then again, I think math is fun anyway.
Ich bin im Moment so sehr mit Quilten beschäftigt, dass ich keine Zeit habe, vernünftige Blogposts zu schreiben. Und meine Patterns geraten auch wieder ins Hintertreffen. Langsam glaube ich, dass ich dafür nie Zeit finden werde. Aber ich beklage mich nicht, das Quilten macht viel Spaß und ich habe kein Problem damit, das den ganzen Tag lang zu tun. Nur hatte ich keine Zeit, ein freies Muster zu finden, das ich hier teilen könnte. Ich weiß auch nicht, ob ich es bis Mittwoch überhaupt schaffe, meine freie Anleitung für März fertig zu bekommen. Aber ich habe eine sehr nützliche Anleitung zum Berechnen der benötigten Stoffmenge für Quiltränder gefunden. Natürlich auf Englisch und bezogen auf das Imperial System. Wer wie ich findet, dass Mathe Spaß macht und keine Probleme mit dem Berechnen von Stoffmengen hat, der braucht dieses Tutorial sicher nicht. Aber die Arbeit im Quilt Shop hat mir gezeigt, dass sehr viele Quilter nicht genau wissen, wie sie so etwas berechnen sollen. Debora von Studio Dragonfly Quilts hat das ausführlich und Schritt für Schritt erklärt und sogar ein Flussdiagram erstellt, das kostenlos heruntergeladen werden kann. Ihre Erklärungen lassen sich selbstverständlich auch auf metrisches Nähen übertragen, allerdings müssen dann die Zahlen im Flussdiagramm entsprechend angepasst werden.
Janet made this Chained Star Quilt a while ago as a mystery quilt project and wasn’t too enthusiastic about the result. I am not sure why. I like the modern look and I love how the red fabric stands out from the white and black background. The pantograph is called “Swirling Feathers”, a rather classic design and a nice way to bring the traditional blocks and the modern colour choices together.
Janet hat diesen Quilt vor einiger Zeit als Mystery-Projekt genäht und war mit dem Ergebnis nicht ganz glücklich. Was genau ihr daran nicht gefällt, konnte sie auch nicht sagen, aber manchmal ist es eben so. Durch die verwendeten Farben und Stoffe sieht der Quilt recht modern aus, was ich persönlich gern mag, und besonders schön finde ich, wie das Rot hervorsticht aus dem schwarz-weißen Hintergrund. Als Quiltmuster haben wir “Swirling Feathers” verwendet, was wiederum sehr klassisch ist und gut die traditionellen Blöcke mit dem modernen Farbschema verbindet.
Alida made this cheerful quilt using a layer cake of batiks. The bright colours remind her of summer, and when she saw the “Going Sailing” pantograph with the sail boats and the waves, she thought it would be perfect for her project. I had a lot of fun quilting this, it is quite different from the usual swirls and feathers, and I think it turned out really cute.
Für diesen fröhlichen Quilt hat Alida einen Layer Cake mit Batikstoffen verwendet. Die kräftigen Farben vermitteln ihr ein Gefühl von Sommer, und als sie das “Going Sailing” Muster mit den Segelbooten und den Wellen sah, wusste sie sofort, dass es perfekt für ihren Quilt war. Ich hatte viel Spaß beim Quilten, das war doch mal ganz anders als die üblichen Swirls und Feathers, und das Endergebnis gefällt mir sehr gut.
We are already way into February, and March is just around the corner. This means St. Patrick’s Day is coming up, and I found this cute mini quilt to celebrate. The tutorial is by Aby Quilts and uses strip piecing but this can easily be adapted to using up all your green scraps. It might take a little longer to piece but since scraps seem to always grow exponentially, this is another neat pattern to make use of them. The Irish Chain pattern is, of course, a perfect choice for St. Patrick’s Day, and if you love to quilt, it gives you lots of room to explore all your creative ideas. And if free motion quilting is not your thing, then classic cross-hatching is a beautiful finish as well.
Der Februar ist auch schon wieder halb vorbei, und der März steht schon fast vor der Tür. Im März ist St. Patrick’s Day, ein Feiertag, der in Deutschland keine Bedeutung hat, in Nordamerika dafür umso mehr. Aber Quilter brauchen ja keinen Feiertag, um einen Quilt zu nähen, und ich habe ein Tutorial für einen Mini-Quilt gefunden, der auch in anderen Farben gut aussehen würde (auf Englisch, aber mit vielen Bildern). Aby Quilts hat in ihrer Anleitung Strip Piecing verwendet, um die Sache zu beschleunigen, aber auch hier kann man wieder gut Reste aufbrauchen. Es dauert zwar ein bisschen länger, die Quadrate alle einzeln zusammenzunähen, aber da sich Reste ja irgendwie immer exponentiell vermehren, kann es nichts schaden, das zumindest im Hinterkopf zu behalten. Das Irish Chain Muster eignet sich natürlich hervorragend für St. Patrick’s Day, und wer gern quiltet, kann auf den Zwischenblöcken der Phantasie freien Lauf lassen. Und wer mit Free Motion Quilting ein bisschen auf Kriegsfuss steht, kann den Quilt wie vorgeschlagen mit klassischen diagonalen Linien quilten.
“Christmas Bears” was made by Naida using a pattern by local designer Barb Cherniwchan ofCoach House Designs. It is mostly pieced with just a little appliqué, a cute little Christmas wall hanging. Although you need lots of patience to piece all those bear paw blocks. The result is definitely worth the trouble, and Naida did a great job. She chose the pantograph “White Out”, and the snowflakes complement the design nicely.
Für ihren Wandbehang “Christmas Bears” hat Naida ein Muster der lokalen Designerin Barb Cherniwchan/Coach House Designs verwendet. Das Top ist überwiegend gepatcht mit ein paar Applikationen, eine sehr schöne Weihnachtsdekoration. Allerdings braucht man eine Menge Geduld, um die ganzen Bear Paw Blöcke zu nähen, aber das Endergebnis lohnt den Aufwand auf jeden Fall. Naida hat das Pantographmuster “White Out” gewählt, die Schneeflocken passen gut und drängen sich nicht in den Vordergrund.
The progress on my patterns is much slower than I would like but unfortunately there are only so many hours in a day, and I am quite busy quilting right now. But I have the first batch of pattern files edited and ready, I am now working on putting it all up on the website. I have one more pattern that still needs a final edit and a few more that need a new sample because I gave the old one away. The one I am editing right now is one of my favourite quilts ever, Coming Up Roses. It already has its own page on the website, so I am not going to repeat myself here. Mit meinen Patterns komme ich leider nicht so schnell voran, wie ich das gern hätte. Ich bin mit Quilten ganz gut beschäftigt, und der Tag hat eben nur 24 Stunden. Danach habe ich dann noch ein weiteres Pattern, das noch überarbeitet werden muss und mehrere, für die ich einen neuen Musterquilt nähen muss, weil ich die Originale verschenkt habe.
