Quilt

Myrna asked me to quilt this beautiful top for her. I love the rich autumn colours and especially how the small inner border pulls everything together. The relatively large blocks called for a bold design, and I thought of the Peacock Feathers right away. We auditioned a few more that Myrna liked but the Peacock Feathers were definitely the winner. Working with Myrna’s quilt was a pleasure, she has excellent sewing skills. I have never had a quilt top before that was as flat as this one on the frame… and that includes my own!

Diesen wunderbaren Quilt habe ich für Myrna gequiltet. Die warmen Herbsttöne gefallen mir gut, und der schmale innere Rand bringt alles gut zusammen. Die einzelnen Blöcke waren relativ groß, und ich dachte sofort an die Peacock Feathers, als ich das Top sah. Wir haben noch ein paar andere Muster ausprobiert, die Myrna gefielen, aber sie entschied sich dann doch für die Peacock Feathers. Das Arbeiten mit diesem Quilt hat viel Spaß gemacht, Myrna näht außergewöhnlich exakt. Ich hatte noch nie einen Quilt, der so glatt auf dem Rahmen gelegen hat… und das schließt meine eigenen mit ein!

Cherri made this wonderful sampler for her daughter, and I was happy to quilt it for her. The pantograph she chose is called “Swirling Feathers”, and the curves complement the geometric blocks nicely. I love the stars in the sashing and also the colour scheme. The fabrics were chosen by Cherri’s daughter, and she loves purple. Quilting for others gives me so many great ideas, and I am quite surprised how many things I suddenly like that are very different from my usual bright colours.

Diesen schönen Sampler hat Cherri für ihre Tochter genäht, und ich habe ihn gern für sie gequiltet. Das Muster, das sie ausgewählt hat, heißt “Swirling Feathers”, und das kurvige Design passt wunderbar zu den geometrischen Blöcken. Besonders gefallen haben mir auch die Sterne im Sashing und das Farbschema. Die Stoffe hat Cherris Tochter selbst gewählt, und sie mag lila besonders gern. Ich bin immer wieder erstaunt, was mir plötzlich alles gefällt, obwohl es ganz anders ist als meine üblichen knalligen Farben und ich freue mich, dass mir das Quilten für andere so viele schöne Ideen liefert.

Ruth made this quilt for her grandson as a Christmas gift. It reminded me a little of Dina’s “Geometric Puzzle”, and the first pantograph I auditioned was the Peacock Feathers. And they didn’t work at all. Sometimes it is really amazing how a design you think might look good just doesn’t go with the quilt. So I auditioned a few more pantographs, and the only one that felt right for Ruth’s quilt was the one called “Maple Sugar” – maple leaves all over. I love that design, it’s so Canadian, and since this quilt was made for a man, it was more appropriate than feathers or swirls. Ruth liked it too, and off to work I went. I am quite happy with the way it turned out, and – which is even more important – Ruth is happy too.

In case you are wondering about the pantograph audition: I traced all my pantographs on clear plastic sheets that can be placed on the quilt top. This gives me at least an idea of how it will look like. I should probably take pictures and write a separate post about this procedure.

Ruth hat diesen Quilt für ihren Enkel zu Weihnachten genäht. Auf den ersten Blick hat er mich ein bisschen an Dinas “Geometric Puzzle” erinnert, und daher habe ich als erstes nach den Peacock Feathers als Quiltmuster gegriffen. Und die passten so gar nicht zu diesem Quilt. Manchmal ist es schon erstaunlich, man denkt, ein Muster könnte gut aussehen, und dann spricht es einen so gar nicht an. Also mussten weitere Muster ausprobiert werden, und letztendlich passten die Ahornblätter, das Muster “Maple Sugar” am besten zu Ruths Quilt. Ich liebe dieses Muster sowieso, es ist so kanadisch, und da dieser Quilt für einen Mann bestimmt ist, eignet es sich auch besser als die üblichen Feder- oder Kringelmuster. Ruth gefiel es auch, also habe ich losgelegt. Mit dem Ergebnis bin ich sehr zufrieden, und – was ja noch wichtiger ist – Ruth ist es auch.

Und wer sich jetzt fragt, wie ich die Muster eigentlich ausprobiere: Ich habe sie alle auf durchsichtige Plastikfolie nachgezeichnet, die kann ich dann auf das Quilttop legen, und das gibt mir einen guten Eindruck, ob ein Muster passt oder nicht. Ich werde mal Bilder davon machen und einen eigenen Post über dieses Auswahlverfahren schreiben.

If you know me, then you know that as a rule I prefer bright, bold fabrics, preferably in pink, over muted greys and browns. But there is an exception to every rule, and the Geometric Puzzle quilt I quilted for Dina is the exception to this one. I love the modern design and how the red pops out and pulls everything together. Large background spaces called for a bigger, bolder quilting design, and we decided that “Peacock Feathers” was the perfect pantograph for Dina’s quilt. I asked her if there was a pattern for this, and she told me she had taken a class, and the finished project was supposed to be a bed runner. Since she had no use for a bed runner, she changed the layout and turned it into a lap quilt. I love the result, great job, Dina!

Wer mich kennt, der weiß, dass ich kräftige, leuchtende Farben bevorzuge, gerne Pinktöne, und dass mich gedämpfte Braun- und Grautöne eher nicht ansprechen. Aber keine Regel ohne Ausnahme, und Dina’s “Geometric Puzzle” Quilt, den ich für sie gequiltet habe, ist die Ausnahme für diese Regel. Das moderne Design gefällt mir richtig gut, und der rote Stoff ist das Tüpfelchen auf dem i. Es waren relativ große Hintergrundflächen zu füllen, und wir wählten das Muster “Peacock Feathers”. Ich fragte Dina, ob sie für den Quilt eine Anleitung hatte, und sie erzählte mir, dass sie an einem Kurs teilgenommen hat, und das fertige Produkt sollte eigentlich ein Bettläufer sein. Da sie für Bettläufer keine Verwendung hat, hat sie kurzerhand das Layout geändert und das Projekt in einen Lap Quilt umgewandelt. Das Endergebnis gefällt mir sehr gut, eine tolle Arbeit!
