What I am working on: February Pattern

Time sure flies… January is already half over. And I am halfway done with my free pattern for February. I had lots of ideas and fiddled around with them for a while and then finally chose one design. The good news: there are no half-square triangles this time, it’s all 2″ squares. The colours are red and pink and cream or maybe tan. I don’t think that will be a big surprise to anyone since it is a pattern for February, and February means Valentine’s Day. Currently I am laying out my squares to make my sample, I am hoping to have it done by the end of this week.

Die Zeit vergeht wie im Flug… der halbe Januar ist schon wieder vorbei. Und ich bin halb fertig mit meiner freien Anleitung für Februar. Ich hatte eine Menge Ideen und habe gezeichnet und verworfen und gezeichnet und verworfen, bis ich mich schließlich für einen Entwurf entschieden habe. Und diesmal besteht er auch nur aus 2″ Quadraten, keine Half-Square Triangles. Das Farbschema ist rot, pink und creme oder beige. Da es ein Muster für Februar ist, und Februar bedeutet Valentinstag, dürfte das wohl niemanden wirklich überraschen. Im Moment lege ich gerade meine Quadrate aus, um mein Probeteil zu nähen. Ich hoffe, dass ich das noch diese Woche beenden kann.

Geometric Puzzle

If you know me, then you know that as a rule I prefer bright, bold fabrics, preferably in pink, over muted greys and browns. But there is an exception to every rule, and the Geometric Puzzle quilt I quilted for Dina is the exception to this one. I love the modern design and how the red pops out and pulls everything together. Large background spaces called for a bigger, bolder quilting design, and we decided that “Peacock Feathers” was the perfect pantograph for Dina’s quilt. I asked her if there was a pattern for this, and she told me she had taken a class, and the finished project was supposed to be a bed runner. Since she had no use for a bed runner, she changed the layout and turned it into a lap quilt. I love the result, great job, Dina!

Wer mich kennt, der weiß, dass ich kräftige, leuchtende Farben bevorzuge, gerne Pinktöne, und dass mich gedämpfte Braun- und Grautöne eher nicht ansprechen. Aber keine Regel ohne Ausnahme, und Dina’s “Geometric Puzzle” Quilt, den ich für sie gequiltet habe, ist die Ausnahme für diese Regel. Das moderne Design gefällt mir richtig gut, und der rote Stoff ist das Tüpfelchen auf dem i. Es waren relativ große Hintergrundflächen zu füllen, und wir wählten das Muster “Peacock Feathers”. Ich fragte Dina, ob sie für den Quilt eine Anleitung hatte, und sie erzählte mir, dass sie an einem Kurs teilgenommen hat, und das fertige Produkt sollte eigentlich ein Bettläufer sein. Da sie für Bettläufer keine Verwendung hat, hat sie kurzerhand das Layout geändert und das Projekt in einen Lap Quilt umgewandelt. Das Endergebnis gefällt mir sehr gut, eine tolle Arbeit!

Free Pattern: Hugs Before Kisses

Since I am working on a pattern for February right now, I have been looking at lots of Valentine’s Day designs. And I found one that I find very creative, it’s not your average pink and red hearts quilt. It is called “Hugs Before Kisses” and was designed by Melissa Corry of “The Happy Quilter”. It is a Moda Bake Shop pattern, so it calls for a Jelly Roll but it is also a nice scrappy pattern for leftover fabric. And it doesn’t even have to be a Valentine’s Day quilt. The alternating X and O blocks create a nice secondary pattern that would look wonderful in any colourway. Be sure to check out her method of squaring up the lattice units for the X blocks by using masking tape on her ruler – a very simple and effective way to turn your ruler into a template. Hugs-Before-Kisses

Da ich ja gerade an einem Pattern für Februar arbeite, dreht sich bei mir zur Zeit alles um Valentinstag-Designs. Und dabei bin ich auf ein Muster gestoßen, das ich sehr kreativ finde, da es eben kein rosaroter Herzchenquilt ist. Es heißt “Hugs Before Kisses” und wurde entworfen von Melissa Corry/“The Happy Quilter”. Sie hat die Anleitung für den Moda Bake Shop geschrieben und daher mit einer Jelly Roll gearbeitet, aber es eignet sich auch gut für Stoffreste. Und es muss nicht mal ein Valentine’s Day Quilt sein. Das Muster besteht aus zwei verschiedenen Blöcken, X und O, die abwechselnd angeordnet ein sekundäres Muster ergeben, das auch in anderen Farben sicher gut aussieht. (Wer sich fragt, was das nun eigentlich mit Valentine’s Day zu tun hat: XOXO steht für “Hugs and Kisses”, also “Umarmungen und Küsse”). Nachahmenswert ist auch Melissas Methode, ihr Lineal mit Hilfe von Malerkrepp in eine Schablone für die Lattice Blöcke zu verwandeln, einfach, günstig und effektiv. Churn Dash

This Churn Dash quilt was made by Ginger as a gift for her niece. She chose the Turbulence pantograph, a favourite with classic geometric quilt blocks, the curves go well with the straight piecing lines. Her backing fabric was almost another quilt top, she used leftover fabrics and randomly scattered a few blocks across. What a wonderful gift!

Ginger hat diesen Churn Dash Quilt genäht, als Geschenk für ihre Nichte. Auch sie hat als Quiltmuster das Design “Turbulence” gewählt. Es eignet sich hervorragend für klassische, geometrische Blöcke, die Kurven lockern die geraden Nähte sehr schön auf. Und ihr Rückseitenstoff war fast ein Quilttop für sich. Sie hat Stoffreste, die vom Top übriggeblieben waren, hier verwendet und mehrere Blöcke nach dem Zufallsprinzip über die Fläche verstreut. Ein wunderbares Geschenk!

Block/Pattern of the Month

January Snowman

Hello, 2017! Happy New Year! I am sure you are all determined to finish your UFO’s this year and not start any new projects until you do so… right? I have a few projects that I need to finish but I am still pretty good in the UFO department. And a new small project here and there doesn’t hurt. Remember the Dancing Garland wall hanging I made before Christmas? I have just the right wall spot for it, it covers up some weird little nook in our hallway, I have no idea what that is for. So now that Christmas is over I thought it would be nice to have a different wall hanging there. And I also liked that I could use all my 2″ scraps for this project. I wondered if I could come up with a design for January that would also use 2″ squares and ended up with this funny snowman. I called it “January Snowman”, hoping I will be able to come up with a design for every month this year. I already have an idea for February but after that… who knows. I have uploaded the pattern and made it available for free download. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Frohes Neues Jahr 2017! Ich bin mir sicher, dass alle meine Leser fest entschlossen sind, in diesem Jahr ihre UFOs abzuarbeiten und keine neuen Projekte zu starten, bevor nicht alles fertig ist, oder? Ich habe zwar auch eine Handvoll Projekte, die noch nicht vollendet sind, aber nach wie vor habe ich kaum UFOS. Und ab und zu ein neues kleines Projekt kann ja auch nicht schaden. Vor Weihnachten hatte ich ja den Dancing Garland Wandbehang genäht. Und für diesen hat sich auch gleich der richtige Platz an der Wand gefunden. Im Flur haben wir so eine seltsame winzige Nische, mit der wusste ich nichts anzufangen, und die wird von dem Wandbehang wunderbar verdeckt. Nachdem Weihnachten nun vorbei ist und mir auch gut gefallen hat, dass ich für das Projekt meine Reste verwenden konnte, überlegte ich, ob mir nicht für Januar ein anderes Design einfallen würde, das sich ebenfalls aus 2″ Quadraten herstellen lässt. Dabei kam dieser lustige Schneemann heraus. Ich habe ihn großspurig “Januar Schneemann” genannt und hoffe, dass mir für jeden Monat des Jahres ein Design einfallen wird. Für Februar habe ich schon eine Idee, aber danach… wir werden sehen. Die Anleitung steht als kostenloser Download zur Verfügung. Ich hoffe, der fröhliche Schneemann gefällt Euch auch so gut wie mir.

Hollywood

Dalle made this black, white and tan quilt that she calls “Hollywood”. The top is very busy, and the pictures are definitely the focus, the quilting needs to take a step back here. We discussed different patterns for the different areas and ended up with separate designs for the blocks, sashing, cornerstones and borders. The backing is tan Fireside, and the quilting shows up very well here… so well that when Dalle picked up the quilt she joked she would have to put the label on the front because the back would be the new front.

Hollywood

Dalle brachte mir diesen Quilt in schwarz, weiß und beige, dem sie den Namen “Hollywood” gab. Das Top ist durch die verwendeten Stoffe recht unruhig, und die Betonung liegt auf den Bildern, so dass das Quilten hier in den Hintergrund treten musste. Wir diskutierten verschiedene Muster und fanden schließlich unterschiedliche Designs für die Blöcke, das Sashing, die Cornerstones und den Rand. Die Rückseite ist Fireside, und hier kann man die Quiltmuster sehr gut erkennen… so gut, dass Dalle, als sie den Quilt abholte, scherzhaft meinte, sie würde das Label nun auf die Vorderseite nähen müssen, da die Rückseite die neue Vorderseite wäre.

Pinwheel Stars

This is another quilt made by Kathleen. She added pinwheels to the centres of traditional Ohio Star blocks. The pantograph she chose is called “Fleur de Swirl”, another timeless design that enhances geometric blocks. The unusual sashing adds another element of interest to this quilt.

Auch diesen Quilt hat Kathleen genäht. Traditionelle Ohio Star Blöcke wurden mit Pinwheels kombiniert. Das Pantographmuster, das sie gewählt hat, heißt “Fleur de Swirl”, ein schönes und zeitloses Design, das sich gut auf geometrischen Blöcken macht. Besonders gut gefällt mir auch das Sashing mit den schmalen Streifen und großen Quadraten.

Carpenter’s Wheel

This traditional Carpenter’s Wheel quilt top was made by Kathleen. She chose the “Turbulence” pantograph because it matches the swirls design of the backing. I think it was an excellent choice also for the top, the curves and swirls go very well with the strict geometric pattern. Kathleen is also a beginner but you wouldn’t believe this if you could see the quilt top up close. Her points match perfectly, the top was pressed meticulously, and the borders were flatter than some of mine… a pleasure to work with!

Kathleen hat dieses Quilttop im traditionellen Carpenter’s Wheel Muster genäht. Auch sie wählte das Pantograph Muster “Turbulence”, und zwar weil es so gut zum Spiral-Design des Rückseitenstoffs passte. Aber auch zum Top passt es richtig gut, finde ich, die Wellen und Kurven lockern das streng geometrische Muster schön auf. Kathleen quiltet noch nicht lang, aber das würde man nie vermuten, wenn man das Top aus der Nähe sieht. Die Ecken passen super genau aufeinander, es war absolut penibel ausgebügelt, und die Ränder lagen flacher als so manche, die ich selbst fabriziere… es war rundherum ein Vergnügen, diesen Quilt zu quilten!Carpenters-Wheel-2

Surfer’s Paradise

Penny made this gorgeous quilt top in blue, green and turquoise Bali Watercolors. It reminded her of the ocean, and she chose the “Turbulence” pantograph that looks like waves. The variegated thread colour she chose is called “Surfer’s Paradise”, and Penny thought this was a wonderful name for the whole quilt. Can you believe that this is Penny’s first quilt? She did an awesome job!

Penny brachte mir dieses wunderbare Quilttop, das sie aus blauen, grünen und türkisen Bali Watercolor Stoffen genäht hat. Es erinnerte sie an das Meer, und daher wählte sie als Quiltmuster “Turbulence” aus, ein Wellenmuster. Das Multicolorgarn in blau und türkis heißt “Surfer’s Paradise”, und Penny fand, dass das ein guter Name für den ganzen Quilt ist. Es ist kaum zu glauben, dass dies der erste Quilt ist, den Penny genäht hat. Eine ganz tolle Arbeit!Surfers-Paradise-1

Dancing Garland

Last week I shared a free pattern of a Christmas tree wall hanging. It kept creeping back into my mind, and I finally gave in on Saturday and started digging through my stash. I usually cut up all my leftovers into squares, and one size is 2″, so I had most of the squares needed for the little quilt already cut. I even had the bigger ones that I needed for the half square triangles. It was really fast to put the top together, and I quilted it this week and put the binding on. I am quite happy with the way it turned out. A fast, fun and easy project!

Letzte Woche hatte ich ja über ein freies Muster zum Download geschrieben, und das ging mir dann hinterher nicht mehr aus dem Kopf. Also habe ich am Sonnabend begonnen, mich durch meine Reste zu wühlen. Ich schneide ja kleinere Reste immer gleich in Quadrate, und eine der Größen, die ich “vorrätig” habe, ist 2″, daher musste ich für den Quilt fast gar nichts mehr zuschneiden. Ich hatte selbst von den größeren, die ich für die Half Square Triangles brauchte, genug. Es dauerte gar nicht lange, und das Top war fertig. Ich habe es gleich diese Woche noch gequiltet und das Binding genäht, und es gefällt mir richtig gut. Schnell und einfach, und es hat jede Menge Spaß gemacht.
