Pantograph

Cherri made this Trip Around The World quilt top a long time ago. She doesn’t remember exactly but thinks it was probably more than ten years ago. She had started quilting it on her domestic machine but gave up after a while. I don’t blame her, this is a king size quilt, and it is quite hard on the neck and shoulders to move all that bulk around and through that small machine. But now she wants to give it to someone, so she unpicked her quilting stitches and asked me to quilt it on Millie instead. She chose the pantograph “Fleur de Swirl” but the fabrics and also the backing are so busy that the quilting doesn’t show very much.

Dieses “Trip Around The World” Quilt Top hat Cherri schon vor langer Zeit genäht. Es ist so lange her, dass sie sich nicht einmal mehr genau erinnern kann, wann das eigentlich war, aber sie ist sich sicher, dass es auf jeden Fall mehr als zehn Jahre her ist. Sie hat damals auch begonnen, selbst mit der Maschine zu quilten, dann aber ziemlich schnell aufgegeben. Was ich gut verstehen kann, das Top ist sehr groß (King Size), was das Quilten auf einer normalen Nähmaschine sehr anstrengend macht. Jetzt möchte sie den Quilt aber verschenken, daher hat sie sich hingesetzt und die Quiltstiche wieder aufgetrennt und mich dann gebeten, den Quilt mit Millie zu quilten. Das Quiltmuster, das Cherri gewählt hat, heißt “Fleur de Swirl”, lässt sich hier aber nicht gut erkennen, da die verwendeten Stoffe zu gemustert sind, ebenso der Rückseitenstoff.

This floral quilt was pieced by Coleen and will be taken to New Zealand as a gift. Coleen chose the “Rose Garden” pantograph because it went well with her feature fabric. She asked for a quilting thread to match the green background fabric. I only had a green that was a little darker but offered her a light yellow thread that matched the yellow fabric in her quilt and blended well with the light green. In the end Coleen decided to follow my recommendation of the willow green, and I think it was a good choice. I understand that not everyone likes the quilting to stand out as much as I do but there is no reason to completely hide it either, and the willow green was a nice compromise.

Coleen hat dieses Quilttop genäht, und der fertige Quilt wird als Geschenk nach Neuseeland gehen. Coleen wählte als Quiltmuster “Rose Garden”, weil es gut zu dem Rosenstoff in ihrem Quilt passte. Sie hätte gern ein Quiltgarn in dem gleichen Hellgrün gehabt wie ihr Hintergrundstoff, aber damit konnte ich leider nicht dienen, ich hatte nur eins, das ein bisschen dunkler war. Ich bot ihr stattdessen ein hellgelbes an, in der Farbe des gelben Stoffes in ihrem Quilt, das auch auf dem grünen Hintergrund sehr unauffällig war. Letztendlich beschloss sie dann aber doch, meiner Empfehlung zu folgen und das etwas dunklere Grün zu nehmen (Farbname Willow = Weide), und ich denke, es war die richtige Entscheidung. Mir ist schon klar, dass nicht jeder das Quilting gern so hervorgehoben hat, wie ich es mag, aber es gibt auch keinen Grunde, es ganz zu verstecken, so dass das Weidengrün ein guter Kompromiss war.

Penny brought me another quilt, and this one was even bigger than the last one. It is a gift for her mom, and she chose the “Rose Garden” pantograph. The pictures didn’t turn out well, I had to edit the colours a lot, they look so much better in reality. The vibrant batiks are just stunning against the blue background, and I like the quilted roses very much, it is a beautiful design.

Penny hat mir wieder einen Quilt gebracht, und dieser ist sogar noch größer als der erste. Er ist ein Geschenk für ihre Mutter, und sie hat als Quiltmuster “Rose Garden” gewählt. Leider sind die Bilder nicht besonders gut geworden, ich musste ganz schön an den Farben herumspielen, in Wirklichkeit sieht der Quilt noch viel besser aus. Die leuchtenden Batikstoffe heben sich toll von dem dunkelblauen Hintergrund ab, und die gequilteten Rosen gefallen mir gut, ein schönes Design.

Three weeks ago I wrote a post about auditioning pantographs, and I used Carol’s Haberdashery quilt as an example in the pictures. And today I am going to show the result. I never even suggested the “Honey Drops” pantograph to her, I thought it was quite obvious in the picture that it didn’t work for her quilt. The “Turbulence” pantograph would have worked but I thought it was a little boring, it works better with more complicated geometrical blocks.  I let Carol choose without telling her what I was thinking, and to my delight she picked what I would have picked, the “Ginger Star” pantograph. Carol brought the Haberdashery fabric back from the UK, and the whimsical star design complements it nicely.

Vor drei Wochen hatte ich beschrieben, wie ich Quiltmuster mit Hilfe von durchsichtiger Folie ausprobiere. Als Beispiel dafür hatte ich Carols Haberdashery Quilt verwendet. Und heute zeige ich nun das Ergebnis. Das erste Muster, “Honey Drops”, hatte ich ihr gar nicht erst gezeigt, ich fand, dass das Bild ganz klar zeigte, dass es überhaupt nicht passt. Das zweite Muster, “Turbulence”, hätte man nehmen können, aber es wäre nicht meine erste Wahl gewesen, es funktioniert meiner Meinung nach besser mit komplizierteren geometrischen Blöcken. Ich ließ Carol wählen, ohne ihr eine Empfehlung zu geben, und es hat mich sehr gefreut, dass sie sich für das dritte Muster, “Ginger Star”, entschied, das hätte ich auch genommen. Den Haberdashery Stoff hat Carol aus England mitgebracht, und das unkonventionelle Sternenmuster passt gut dazu.

Janet made this Chained Star Quilt a while ago as a mystery quilt project and wasn’t too enthusiastic about the result. I am not sure why. I like the modern look and I love how the red fabric stands out from the white and black background. The pantograph is called “Swirling Feathers”, a rather classic design and a nice way to bring the traditional blocks and the modern colour choices together.

Janet hat diesen Quilt vor einiger Zeit als Mystery-Projekt genäht und war mit dem Ergebnis nicht ganz glücklich. Was genau ihr daran nicht gefällt, konnte sie auch nicht sagen, aber manchmal ist es eben so. Durch die verwendeten Farben und Stoffe sieht der Quilt recht modern aus, was ich persönlich gern mag, und besonders schön finde ich, wie das Rot hervorsticht aus dem schwarz-weißen Hintergrund. Als Quiltmuster haben wir “Swirling Feathers” verwendet, was wiederum sehr klassisch ist und gut die traditionellen Blöcke mit dem modernen Farbschema verbindet.

Alida made this cheerful quilt using a layer cake of batiks. The bright colours remind her of summer, and when she saw the “Going Sailing” pantograph with the sail boats and the waves, she thought it would be perfect for her project. I had a lot of fun quilting this, it is quite different from the usual swirls and feathers, and I think it turned out really cute.

Für diesen fröhlichen Quilt hat Alida einen Layer Cake mit Batikstoffen verwendet. Die kräftigen Farben vermitteln ihr ein Gefühl von Sommer, und als sie das “Going Sailing” Muster mit den Segelbooten und den Wellen sah, wusste sie sofort, dass es perfekt für ihren Quilt war. Ich hatte viel Spaß beim Quilten, das war doch mal ganz anders als die üblichen Swirls und Feathers, und das Endergebnis gefällt mir sehr gut.

Myrna asked me to quilt this beautiful top for her. I love the rich autumn colours and especially how the small inner border pulls everything together. The relatively large blocks called for a bold design, and I thought of the Peacock Feathers right away. We auditioned a few more that Myrna liked but the Peacock Feathers were definitely the winner. Working with Myrna’s quilt was a pleasure, she has excellent sewing skills. I have never had a quilt top before that was as flat as this one on the frame… and that includes my own!

Diesen wunderbaren Quilt habe ich für Myrna gequiltet. Die warmen Herbsttöne gefallen mir gut, und der schmale innere Rand bringt alles gut zusammen. Die einzelnen Blöcke waren relativ groß, und ich dachte sofort an die Peacock Feathers, als ich das Top sah. Wir haben noch ein paar andere Muster ausprobiert, die Myrna gefielen, aber sie entschied sich dann doch für die Peacock Feathers. Das Arbeiten mit diesem Quilt hat viel Spaß gemacht, Myrna näht außergewöhnlich exakt. Ich hatte noch nie einen Quilt, der so glatt auf dem Rahmen gelegen hat… und das schließt meine eigenen mit ein!

Cherri made this wonderful sampler for her daughter, and I was happy to quilt it for her. The pantograph she chose is called “Swirling Feathers”, and the curves complement the geometric blocks nicely. I love the stars in the sashing and also the colour scheme. The fabrics were chosen by Cherri’s daughter, and she loves purple. Quilting for others gives me so many great ideas, and I am quite surprised how many things I suddenly like that are very different from my usual bright colours.

Diesen schönen Sampler hat Cherri für ihre Tochter genäht, und ich habe ihn gern für sie gequiltet. Das Muster, das sie ausgewählt hat, heißt “Swirling Feathers”, und das kurvige Design passt wunderbar zu den geometrischen Blöcken. Besonders gefallen haben mir auch die Sterne im Sashing und das Farbschema. Die Stoffe hat Cherris Tochter selbst gewählt, und sie mag lila besonders gern. Ich bin immer wieder erstaunt, was mir plötzlich alles gefällt, obwohl es ganz anders ist als meine üblichen knalligen Farben und ich freue mich, dass mir das Quilten für andere so viele schöne Ideen liefert.
