Last year right before Christmas I shared a link to a free pattern for a tree skirt, and I jokingly said at the time that I should make one right after Christmas, this way I would at least have a tree skirt for next year’s Christmas. And guess what – that’s exactly what I did. I went fabric shopping on Christmas Eve and made the skirt over the holidays. I even quilted it, all that was still left to do was cut out the circle and do the binding. In January it went into a drawer, and I never looked at it again until I realized about two weeks ago that December was almost here. So I sat down and finished it, and it is now ready for the tree that we will buy next weekend.
Im letzten Jahr hatte ich kurz vor Weihnachten den Link zu einem Tutorial für eine Weihnachtsbaumdecke gepostet und dabei halb scherzhaft gesagt, dass ich dieses Projekt am besten gleich nach Weihnachten starten sollte, damit ich wenigstens im nächsten Jahr eine Weihnachtsbaumdecke hätte. Und genau das habe ich dann auch gemacht. Am Heiligabend habe ich morgens Stoffe gekauft und dann über die Feiertage genäht. Sogar gequiltet hatte ich sofort, ich musste nur noch das Loch in der Mitte ausschneiden und das Binding annähen. Im Januar wanderte das Teil dann in eine Schublade, und bis vor zwei Wochen habe ich es nicht mehr angerührt. Dann fiel mir plötzlich auf, dass der Dezember schon fast vor der Tür steht, und hier in Nordamerika stellen wir den Baum ja deutlich früher auf als in Deutschland. Also habe ich mich hingesetzt und das Projekt beendet, und jetzt wartet die Decke nur noch auf den Baum, den wir am Wochenende kaufen wollen.
Here is the next of my patterns that I wrote before the quilt show, I just finished the German version today. It is a mug rug that I designed as a gift for a friend, and it is quite different from my usual style. I tried to come up with something that she would like, and a modern look seemed more suitable. The Flying Geese and the Rainbow Stripe are foundation pieced, the triangles are irregular and not suitable for rotary cutting. I made the original gift as a set of two mug rugs, one being the mirror image of the other, and the pattern contains foundation patterns and instructions for both versions.
Und weiter geht es mit der nächsten Anleitung, die ich vor der Quilt Show geschrieben habe, die deutsche Version habe ich heute endlich beendet. Es ist ein Mug Rug, den ich für eine Freundin entworfen und genäht habe, und er ist vom Stil her ganz anders als meine sonstigen Designs. Ich habe mich absichtlich bemüht, etwas zu nähen, das ihr gefallen würde, und ein moderner Look schien mir da angebrachter. Die Flying Geese und der Regenbogenstreifen sind über Papier genäht. Die Dreiecke sind unregelmäßig und eignen sich nicht zum Schneiden mit dem Rollschneider. Ich hatte als Geschenk ein Set bestehend aus zwei Mug Rugs genäht, wobei einer das Spiegelbild des anderen war, und die Anleitung enthält die Muster für beide Varianten.

I wrote a few patterns for smaller projects and made samples before the quilt show in October, and I am currently working on the German versions. The first one I have ready in both languages is this Elephant Pillow. I made the original version two years ago as a gift for a friend and was really happy with the result, it does indeed look like an elephant. And people seem to agree, this was one of my best selling patterns at the show.
In den Wochen vor der Quilt Show habe ich noch schnell ein paar Anleitungen für kleinere Projekte geschrieben und Muster dafür genäht, und im Moment bin ich damit beschäftigt, die deutschen Versionen zu schreiben. Dieses Elefantenkissen ist das erste Projekt, das ich in beiden Sprachen fertig habe. Das Originalkissen habe ich vor zwei Jahren als Geschenk für eine Freundin genäht, und der Elefant hat mir richtig gut gefallen, weil er so echt aussieht. Und anscheinend sehe das nicht nur ich so, diese Anleitung hat sich auf der Show super gut verkauft.

This is one of the most beautiful quilts I have ever quilted for someone. It was made by Penny and will be given to her daughter for Christmas… this one is a different Penny though, not the one who made last week’s Batik Leaves. It is a king size Grandmother’s Flower Garden, and every flower is made up of seven different fabrics. There are a few repeats in the green background but all the fabrics for the flowers were only used once. It was all done by hand and took Penny five years to finish this project, working on it on and off. She says she started quilting in the 1980s and collected a lot of fabrics, and her friends gave her lots of fabric pieces for her flowers as well. She didn’t know how she wanted it quilted and ask me to “make the flowers look like flowers”. That’s what I did… and I have to admit that I was surprised myself how well that turned out. I absolutely loved working on this quilt and enjoyed looking at all the pretty flowers while quilting them. This will be a wonderful Christmas surprise for her daughter.
Dieser Quilt ist definitiv einer der schönsten, die ich je für jemanden gequiltet habe. Er wurde von Penny genäht als Weihnachtsgeschenk für ihre Tochter… es handelt sich hierbei um eine andere Penny, nicht die Dame, die den Batik Leaves Quilt genäht hat, über den ich letzte Woche geschrieben habe. Es ist ein King Size Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilt (ca. 2,50 m x 2,50 m), und jede Blume besteht aus sieben verschiedenen Stoffen. Im grünen Hintergrund wiederholen sich einige Stoffe, aber jeder Stoff, der für eine Blume verwendet wurde, kommt nur einmal im gesamten Quilt vor. Er ist komplett mit der Hand genäht, und dafür hat Penny insgesamt (mit Pausen) fünf Jahre gebraucht. Sie hat in den 80er Jahren mit dem Quilten angefangen und viele Stoffe gesammelt, und ihre Freunde haben ihr auch immer wieder Stöffchen für die Blumen zukommen lassen. Wie sie ihn gequiltet haben wollte, wusste sie nicht so genau, sie bat mich nur, die “Blumen wie Blumen aussehen zu lassen”. Das habe ich gemacht, und ich war selbst erstaunt, wie gut das wirkt. Diesen Quilt zu quilten hat riesigen Spaß gemacht, und die vielen verschiedenen Stoffe machten es sehr abwechslungsreich, es gab immer wieder etwas Neues zu entdecken. Das wird eine tolle Weihnachtsüberraschung für ihre Tochter.
When I started this project in January I wasn’t sure if I would be able to come up with a pattern for each month. And now it is suddenly November, and there is only one left for December that I still have to design and make. Wow, this year sure went by fast. I decided to make an umbrella for November. In rainbow colours. I think I am in my rainbow phase right now. But November is often grey and rainy, so cheerful colours seemed appropriate. For quilting I tried to give the umbrella some texture. The free motion umbrellas that fill the background are my own design.
Als ich im Januar mit diesem Projekt angefangen habe, war ich mir nicht sicher, ob mir überhaupt für jeden Monat etwas einfallen würde. Und jetzt haben wir schon November, und mir fehlt nur noch ein Design für Dezember. Das Jahr ist mal wieder ganz schön vorbeigerast. Für November habe ich einen Regenschirm genäht. In Regenbogenfarben. Da der November oft so grau und regnerisch ist, fand ich fröhliche Farben sehr passend. Und außerdem bin ich, glaube ich, gerade in einer Regenbogenphase. Beim Quilten habe ich versucht, dem Regenschirm etwas Struktur zu geben. Die Free Motion Regenschirme, die den Hintergrund füllen, sind mein eigenes Design.

It is my turn today to show my project for the Enter If You Dare Blog Hop. A big thank you goes to Marian of Seams To Be Sew for organizing it and for inviting me to participate. This is my first blog hop but definitely not my last, I had a lot of fun coming up with a project for today. We had our quilt show here in town on Friday and Saturday, and I was busy both days as a vendor selling patterns and also as a guild member helping with the set up, so I didn’t want to do a big project and considered a mug rug. But inspiration doesn’t work that way… When I thought of doing something with shadow pumpkins on an orange background I realized that I wouldn’t be able to include a lot of detail in a mug rug. Okay, it would have to be a wall hanging instead. The pumpkins are based on actual pumpkins that my husband carved a few years ago, so the project is a family effort. I played around with the layout, and then the name “Stack O’ Jacks” suddenly popped into my head. I thought it was funny, so I stacked the pumpkins on top of each other and decided to keep them that way.
Heute bin ich an der Reihe, mein Projekt für den Enter If You Dare Blog Hop zu zeigen. Ein großes Dankeschön geht an Marian von Seams To Be Sew für die Organisation und die Einladung, daran teilzunehmen. Dies ist mein erster Blog Hop, aber ganz sicher nicht mein letzter, ich hatte viel Spaß daran, mir ein Projekt hierfür auszudenken. Wir hatten ja am Freitag und Sonnabend unsere Quiltshow hier im Ort, und ich hatte dort einen Stand, um Patterns zu verkaufen, und gleichzeitig bin ich auch Gildemitglied und habe beim Auf- und Abbau geholfen. Daher wollte ich kein großes Projekt planen und dachte erst an einen Mug Rug. Aber wie das so ist mit der Inspiration, sie geht ihre eigenen Wege. Ich hatte dann die Idee, Schattenkürbisse auf einen orangen Hintergrund zu legen, und mir wurde schnell klar, dass ein Mug Rug zu klein ist, um dort ins Detail zu gehen. Also mutierte der Entwurf zu einem Wandbehang. Die Kürbisse basieren übrigens auf echten Halloween-Kürbissen, die mein Mann vor ein paar Jahren geschnitzt hat. Während ich mit verschiedenen Entwürfen herumspielte, fiel mir plötzlich der Name “Stack O’ Jacks” für das Muster ein, und das fand ich lustig, also stapelte ich die Kürbisse aufeinander. (“Stack” bedeutet Stapel, und Jack ist hier die Abkürzung für Jack-O’-Lantern, so heißen die geschnitzten Kürbislaternen auf Englisch).

In meinem Kürbisstapel sieht man die Stiele der Kürbisse zwar nicht mehr, die Schablonen in der Anleitung sind aber für die vollständigen Kürbisse. Wer sie also nicht stapeln möchte, kann leicht einzelne Blöcke daraus nähen und anders anordnen, es sind viele Variationen möglich. EDIT 1. To celebrate my first blog hop I will have the pattern for “Stack O’ Jacks” available for free download until Halloween. In November I will move it over to the shop, so be sure to download it right away. Although the stems of the pumpkins are not visible in my stacked version of the design, the templates are for the whole pumpkins, you can easily make them as individual blocks and even turn them into a table runner. Or just pick one and turn it into a pillow. The possibilities are endless, and I hope you will enjoy this project as much as I do. It’s a new month already, autumn is here, and October means Halloween. I was planning on a pumpkin for October from the beginning but I wasn’t thinking Jack-O’-Lantern at first. When I started playing around with ideas I realized quickly that a pumpkin would be very close to my September Apple pattern, and I found that a little boring. And then I noticed that a purple background for a Halloween pumpkin would be great for using up lots of purple scraps. For quilting, I used Leah Day’s “Escargot” again for the pumpkin and her “Pumpkin Patch” design as a background filler.
Und wieder ist ein Monat vorbei, und wir haben Oktober. Da war natürlich ein Kürbis naheliegend, aber eigentlich war kein Halloween-Motiv geplant. Aber als ich anfing, meine Ideen zu Papier (bzw. in den Computer) zu bringen, stellte ich ziemlich schnell fest, dass ein Kürbis dem September Apfel zu ähnlich war, und das fand ich langweilig. Und dann dachte ich, ein lila Hintergrund wäre doch mal eine Abwechslung und eine gute Gelegenheit, auch den Stapel an lila Resten etwas zu reduzieren. Gequiltet habe ich den Kürbis wieder mit dem Muster “Escargot” von Leah Day, und auch das Hintergrundmuster ist diesmal von ihr, passenderweise heißt es “Pumpkin Patch”.

This stunning quilt was made by Lynne using Shania Sunga’s Canada Batiks. For quilting she chose “Maple Breezes”. This design isn’t as dense as my other maple leaves pantograph “Maple Sugar” and fit this particular project better. Lynne wanted the centre part quilted with white thread but didn’t like the idea of white quilting stitches on the black and red outer border fabric. We decided to keep the pantograph off of the border and do a custom continuous maple leaf border instead, using red thread which blends much better with the fabric. What a fantastic quilt!
Diesen tollen Quilt hat Lynne genäht und dafür Batikstoffe aus der Kanada-Kollektion von Shania Sunga verwendet. Als Quiltmuster wählte sie “Maple Breezes”. Dieses Muster ist etwas aufgelockerter und nicht ganz so dicht wie mein anderes Ahornblatt-Muster “Maple Sugar” und passte besser zu diesem Quilt. Lynne wollte gern die Mitte mit weißem Garn gequiltet haben, war aber nicht sehr angetan von dem Gedanken, weiße Quiltstiche auf dem roten und schwarzen äußeren Rand zu sehen. Daher beschlossen wir, das Pantograph-Muster nicht auf den äußeren Rand auszudehnen. Dort quiltete ich stattdessen Ahornblätter mit rotem Garn, das passt sich den Farben des Stoffs besser an. Was für ein toller Quilt!
Almost a year ago I posted a link to a free pattern dowloadable from Riley Blake Designs. It was called “Hope Chest” but that was actually the name of the fabric line they used for this project. I started making blocks from my leftovers and kept calling it “Hope Chest” anyway. It is not really a scrap project as you need two 5″ squares of the same fabric per block. Whenever I had enough squares for a block, I made one, and when I had 35, I put them all together. Somehow I didn’t like the result very much. I think most of my leftovers were too dark, not the bright, cheerful colours I like, and the pieces in the finished blocks are still too big for my taste. Scrap quilt pieces have to be small, otherwise my OCD can’t handle all the different fabrics. But I wanted to donate it anyway, so I put it on the frame and started quilting. And boy, do I like how that turned out! It looks like a completely different quilt now. Quilting really makes the quilt!
Vor knapp einem Jahr hatte ich einen Link gepostet zu einem Muster, das kostenlos von Riley Blake Designs heruntergeladen werden konnte. Der Name des Musters war “Hope Chest”, allerdings war das der Name der verwendeten Stoffe und nicht des Musters. In Ermangelung eines besseren Namens bin ich dann einfach bei “Hope Chest” geblieben und habe angefangen, aus Resten Blöcke zu nähen. So ein richtiges Resteprojekt war es eigentlich nicht, da man für jeden Block zwei 5″ große Quadrate aus demselben Stoff brauchte. Ich habe immer, wenn ich genug Stoff hatte, einen Block genäht, und als ich dann 35 hatte, habe ich sie zu einem Top zusammengenäht. So richtig gefallen hat mir das Ergebnis aber nicht. Meine Reste waren zu dunkel, mir fehlten die bunten, fröhlichen Farben, und außerdem waren die Teile am Schluss immer noch zu groß. Viele verschiedene Stoffe kann meine Zwanghaftigkeit offenbar nur verarbeiten, wenn die Teile klein genug sind. Aber ich wollte den Quilt sowieso dem We Care Programm der Gilde spenden, also habe ich ihn auf den Rahmen von Millie gepackt und losgelegt. Und wow, bin ich mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden! Das sieht doch gleich ganz anders aus. Hier macht das Quilten wirklich einen riesigen Unterschied.
Another month has come and gone, and we are still complaining about the heat, wishing for rain. I am so ready for some brisk fall mornings! For September I have created an apple from 2″ squares. The quilting was mostly to give texture to the areas, the design I used for the apple is by Leah Day, and she calls it “Escargot”. It is basically a variation of pebbling, and I like it a lot. It is not as time consuming as pebbling but still quite dense. The background has loops and apples, another design that I came up with myself. Scroll down for the free download link.
Und schon wieder ist ein Monat vorbei, und wir stöhnen hier immer noch über die Hitze. Es wird wirklich langsam Zeit für ein paar kühlere Herbsttemperaturen. Für September habe ich einen Apfel aus 2″ Quadraten zusammengesetzt. Gequiltet habe ich verschiedene Füllmuster, das Muster, das ich für den Apfel selbst benutzt habe, ist von Leah Day, sie nennt es “Escargot”. Es ist eine Pebbling-Variante und gefällt mir richtig gut. Es geht ein bisschen schneller als Pebbling und gibt eine gute Struktur. Die Äpfel im Hintergrund sind wieder mein eigenes Design, je öfter ich das mache, um so leichter fällt es mir.
