Once Upon A Story Row Along – Show and Tell Day

Today is Show and Tell Day for the Row Along, and here are the links to the participating bloggers. I already posted a picture of the finished wall hanging that I made from my row here in my original Row Along post. We are ten days away from the Chilliwack Quilt Show, and I am busy with preparations. And since I have nothing better to do, I have signed up for another blog hop. I will share the details in another post, today please visit the participating bloggers and check out their project. There are a few more giveaways that you can enter as well.

I Woolly Love Ewe

Isn’t this just the cutest quilt? I was thrilled when Wendy asked me to custom quilt it for her. There was so much negative space to fill, block background, sashing, borders, I had a lot of fun playing with it and coming up with different designs for the different areas. Wendy provided the picture of the finished quilt, and I have permission to share it. I agree with the little girl, the black sheep was my favourite too 🙂

I Woolly Love Ewe

Several people have asked for the pattern, I didn’t design this quilt, I just quilted it. The designer’s name is Janet Stone, and it was published in Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting magazine, in the Jan/Feb 2009 issue. It looks like it is still available as a digital edition here.

Tuxedo Cats BOM – Block #10

October is quilt show month in Chilliwack which means I am super busy again. I didn’t do much in September, my mom was visiting from Germany, and it was her first visit to North America. We took her on a nice trip down to Seattle, Mount Rainier and the Olympic Peninsula, then took the ferry back to Vancouver Island and spent a few days there. Then I dragged her with me to quilt guild meetings and square dancing, and we also went up to Kelowna where our son is going to school at UBC Okanagan. We had a few very rainy days but overall we were lucky with the weather… a week later, and there would have been snow on the Coquihalla (that’s the Highway Thru Hell, if you are familiar with the TV show). We had a great time, and after she left I discovered that I had nothing left to do for this month’s BOM pattern other than write this post. Looks like I was well organized ahead of time, and I don’t even remember 🙂 As always, the pattern will be available for free download until the end of the month and move over to the store section when the November block is published.

EDIT: The month of free download is over, and the block has moved to the pattern store where it is now available for purchase.

Under The Sea

When Nicole dropped off this quilt, she told me she wanted bubbles and seaweed quilted in the background and whatever else I could think of that would fill all this negative space. She didn’t have to ask twice, this was one of the most fun projects ever. I went really crazy, quilting any kind of sea creature I could come up with. It ended up being almost an I Spy quilt. I admit it was quite intimidating when I started at the top with all that empty space. I quilted the bigger creatures first and then went back to fill in the background with smaller objects and various filler designs. The full quilt can be seen in one of the smaller gallery pictures, just click on it to enlarge the view.

Once Upon A Story Row Along – Bremen Town Musicians

Bremen Town Musicians EQ

I found this year’s Row Along theme a little more difficult than last year’s. I am not really familiar with any North American nursery rhymes, and they don’t make a lot of sense if you don’t grow up with them. Well, nursery rhymes don’t make a whole lot of sense in general, I guess 😉 Anyway, I started thinking about fairy tales, being German I grew up with the Grimm Brothers and their stories. Unfortunately a lot of these stories have been turned into Disney movies, and I knew I needed to stay away from those. I finally chose the “Bremen Town Musicians” for my row. Not only is this a very German story (Bremen is a city in northern Germany) but the animals on top of each other also worked very well with the row format. If you are not familiar with the story, you can find an English version here.

Bremen Town Musicians Row

My row shows the four animals outside the cottage in the forest as they are climbing on top of each other, getting ready to drive the robbers out and chase them away. It is all fusible appliqué with a machine blanket stitch. I then added two outside borders to turn it into a wall hanging which I registered for our local quilt show in October.

Northcott Fabrics generously offered their fabrics to all the designers again this year, and we could choose anything from their current collections for our projects. I chose three fabrics this time, the night sky, the forest floor and the cottage wall. Thank you, Northcott, for your beautiful fabrics. The pattern for the row will be available for free download for a week. Afterwards the pattern for the complete wall hanging will be available for purchase. If you know me, you know that I am fond of tiny appliqué pieces, and I appliquéd every piece of my design that isn’t marked as embroidery. Some of those pieces are very small, and if you don’t enjoy working with them, you can always embroider the details.

Block/Pattern of the Month

Tuxedo Cats BOM – Block #9

A big thank you to all of you for your patience and especially those who took the time to leave a comment. I know that I don’t owe anybody anything but the internet can be a weird place. Being a perfectionist and overachiever I realize that I am usually putting more pressure on myself than necessary, so not publishing the block on time is a big thing for me. Progress, I guess 🙂 And thanks for all the good wishes for my son. He is already starting his third year at the university, time sure flies. He just added math as a second major, “for fun”. I am sure that anyone who thinks college level math is fun, will do just fine. Speaking of fun, our Tuxedo Cat has his Ginger Cat buddy with him in September’s free pattern. Those two must be watching something interesting… probably birds or squirrels. The pattern will be available for free download until the end of the month and move to the store section when the October block is published.

EDIT: The month of free download is over, and the block has moved to the pattern store where it is now available for purchase.

Anne of Green Gables

It doesn’t get more Canadian than Anne of Green Gables! Darlene purchased these kits for five Anne-themed wall hangings in a quilt shop on Prince Edward Island, Anne’s home province. She decided to combine the five blocks into one big quilt, and I was thrilled when she asked me to quilt it for her. I had a blast coming up with different designs to enhance the background. It was a bit tricky quilting through all those layers of fusible, and I had to make a few compromises to make it work but it ended up being one of my favourite projects ever. For some reason I didn’t take a picture of the whole quilt but you wouldn’t be able to see all the details anyway.

Pretty Pinwheels

Barb made this pretty quilt as a gift for the baby daughter of friends. The quilting design is called “Wandering Daisies” and was just right for this cute girly quilt in all my favourite colours.

Tuxedo Cats Block #9 – Please Read

September 1 is coming up, and there is no way that I can find the time to publish the next block on that day, with our son moving into a dorm room. Move in day is always crazy, and I am not going to put more pressure on myself, trying to get everything up and running on the blog and across social media while helping him move. I will publish the September block on September 2 at the usual time (9 am PDT), and the August block will stay available for free download until then. Thank you for understanding.
