Free Pattern: Geese Migration

“Geese Migration” is a free pattern designed by Cynthia Brunz of Quilting is more fun than Housework (great name by the way). Cynthia combined squares and flying geese to an unusual block that I find quite interesting. And I also like her use of colour and value. The quilt is not that difficult to make, it looks worse than it actually is, and the result is just stunning. The pattern can also be used for a scrappy quilt but as much as I like using up scraps, I think this particular pattern looks better the way Cynthia designed it.

“Geese Migration” ist ein freies Muster von Cynthia Brunz/Quilting is more fun than Housework. (Und das ist auch mal ein sehr origineller Name!). Cynthia hat Quadrate mit Flying Geese kombiniert, und dabei kam dieser ungewöhnliche Block heraus, den ich sehr interessant finde. Sehr gelungen finde ich auch, wie sie für ihr Layout mit Farben gespielt hat. Der Quilt ist nicht wirklich schwierig zu nähen, es sieht schlimmer aus, als es ist. Das Muster eignet sich auch zur Resteverwertung, aber in diesem speziellen Fall denke ich, dass der Quilt besser wirkt, wenn die Farben mit Methode plaziert werden, wie es die Designerin vorgemacht hat.

50th Anniversary Quilt

This quilt is a gift for a 50th wedding anniversary. Gail was one of the bridesmaids at the wedding, and she made this scrappy quilt as a gift for her friend. She included several pieces that have a special meaning, for example a wedding bouquet and a picture of Elvis. The pantograph we used to quilt her gift is called “Seaside Swirl”. This is another nice design for using up scraps, I will have to keep it in mind.

Dieser Quilt ist ein Geschenk zur goldenen Hochzeit. Gail war damals eine der Brautjungfern und hat ihn jetzt für ihre Freundin zum Jubiläum genäht. Einige der verwendeten Stoffe haben eine besondere Bedeutung, zum Beispiel der Brautstrauß und das Bild von Elvis. Das Pantograph-Muster, das wir verwendet haben, heißt “Seaside Swirl”. Mir gefällt, wie die Restestreifen angeordnet sind, das muss ich unbedingt im Hinterkopf behalten für meine Resteverwertung.

Free Pattern: Film At Five

Here is another scrappy quilt that I would really like to make. “Film At Five” was created by Deanna of “Wedding Dress Blue”, and it uses 2 1/2″ squares. When I am done with my 2″ projects, I can move on to the next size and empty that drawer. Be sure to check out Deanna’s tutorial and scroll all the way down. This project has been around for a while, and Deanna has updated the post with pictures that quilters around the world sent to her of their finished projects. Many of them are scrappy but some quilters limited their fabric choices to just a few colours with stunning results.

Hier ist ein weiterer Scrap Quilt von meiner To-Do-Liste: “Film At Five”, entworfen von Deanna/Wedding Dress Blue. Sie hat 2 1/2″ Quadrate verwendet, und das kommt mir sehr entgegen. Wenn ich mit meinen 2″ Projekten fertig bin, kann ich zur nächsten Größe wechseln und eine weitere Schublade leeren. Deannas Tutorial (auf Englisch mit vielen Bildern) ist auch deshalb sehenswert, weil sie am Ende des Posts Bilder eingefügt hat von fertigen Projekten, die ihr Quilter aus aller Welt geschickt haben. Sie hat das Tutorial schon vor mehreren Jahren gepostet, so dass sie zwischenzeitlich jede Menge Feedback bekommen hat. Und wer keine Scrap Quilts mag, findet dort auch Anregungen, wie man das Muster mit weniger Farben nähen kann.

Shattered Dishes

Joanne made this quilt top that she calls “Shattered Dishes”, a fun variation of the traditional Broken Dishes block. For quilting she chose the pantograph “Swirling Feathers”, also a very traditional design that complements the pieced triangle blocks well. Isn’t it amazing what you can do with “just” half-square triangles?

Diesen Quilt hat mir Joanne zum Quilten gebracht. Sie nennt ihn “Shattered Dishes”, die Blöcke sind eine Variation des traditionellen Blocks “Broken Dishes”. Als Quiltmuster hat sie die “Swirling Feathers” gewählt, ein ebenfalls traditionelles Muster, das auch hier die geometrischen Blöcke gut ergänzt. Es ist doch immer wieder beeindruckend, was man aus “nur” Half-Square Triangles so alles machen kann.

Christmas Tree

It’s never too early to think about Christmas, and Barbara brought me this charming little wall hanging that she made from a Christmas tree panel in April. She chose to have it quilted with a small meander. While I am usually not the biggest fan of meandering, I agree that it was the best choice for this project. Elaborate quilting designs would have been lost in the tree part and would have been too much in the background areas. This was a quick and relaxing project for me, just the right thing to tackle after my return from Europe to get back into things.

Es ist ja nie zu früh, an Weihnachten zu denken, und nach diesem Motto verfuhr Barbara und brachte mir im April diesen hübschen Wandbehang, den sie aus einem Weihnachtsbaum-Panel genäht hat. Als Quiltmuster wählte sie nur ein Meander, was ich ja normalerweise nicht so schön finde, aber in diesem Fall gab ich ihr recht, es war die beste Wahl. Aufwendige, detaillierte Muster wären im Weihnachtsbaum verloren gegangen und im Hintergrund zuviel gewesen. Es war ein schnelles und entspanntes Projekt für mich, genau richtig, um nach meiner Rückkehr aus Deutschland wieder in den Quiltrhythmus zu kommen.

Free Pattern: Scrap Jar Stars

Here is another scrappy quilt pattern to use up all those leftovers that keep piling up. Amber Johnson of Gigi’s Thimble wrote a tutorial with lots of pictures. Her version uses only red, blue and aqua but it works equally well with scraps of all colours. For the centres you will need 2″ squares, and the half-square triangles for the star points use 4 1/2″ squares. Or you could also change the pattern a little and make a four patch from 3 1/2″ squares for the centre of the star… that’s what I would have to do since I am *really* running low on 2″ squares after all my scrappy projects this year. It is a very versatile pattern, so be sure to check it out.

Hier ist ein weiteres Tutorial für einen Scrap Quilt, um all die Reste zu verwenden, die sich immer ansammeln. Amber Johnson/Gigi’s Thimble hat die Anleitung geschrieben, auf Englisch, aber mit vielen Bildern. Für ihre Version hat sie nur rot, blau und türkis verwendet, aber das Muster eignet sich wunderbar für Reste in allen Farben. Für die Mitte werden 2″ Quadrate verwendet, die Dreiecke für die Sternenspitzen entstehen aus 4 1/2″ Quadraten. Oder man könnte auch aus vier 3 1/2″ Quadraten ein Four Patch für die Mitte nähen, das würde ich vermutlich tun, da ich mittlerweile kaum mehr 2″ Quadrate herumliegen habe, nach all der Resteverwertung in diesem Jahr. Es ist ein vielseitig verwendbares Muster, Abspeichern lohnt sich.

Monkey Business

This is another of Ginger’s quilts that she asked me to quilt for her. If you are wondering where the monkey in the quilt name is coming from, the pieced blocks go by many names, and one of them is “Monkey Wrench”. The other popular name you might have come across is “Churn Dash”. I quilted one motif in the pieced blocks and another in the alternating squares and chose a third motif for the blue border squares. A quick and easy fun project!

Dies ist ein weiterer Quilt, den ich für Ginger gequiltet habe. Wer sich fragt, woher der Name “Monkey Business” kommt… der gepatchte Block in diesem Quilt ist unter vielen verschiedenen Namen bekannt, und einer davon ist “Monkey Wrench”. Ebenfalls sehr bekannt ist die Bezeichnung “Churn Dash”. Gequiltet habe ich zwei verschiedene Motive abwechselnd in den gepatchten Blöcken und den hellen Quadraten sowie ein drittes Motiv in den blauen Blöcken des äußeren Randes. Das war ein schnelles Projekt, das viel Spaß gemacht hat.

Kalei’s Quilt

Cindy made this quilt as a gift for her daughter Kalei. We chose the pantograph “Peacock Feathers” since this design looks very nice on rectangular blocks. Cindy didn’t just piece the top, she also made large half-square triangle blocks from the leftover fabrics for the backing which turns this into a reversible quilt. I love the colour combination, and the fabric with the peace signs is my favourite.

Diesen Quilt hat Cindy als Geschenk für ihre Tochter Kalei genäht. Als Quiltmuster haben wir die “Peacock Feathers” (Pfauenfedern) ausgesucht, die passen immer so gut zu rechteckigen Blöcken. Und Cindy hat nicht nur das Top gepatcht, sondern aus den restlichen Stoffen auch Half-Square Triangles genäht und daraus die Rückseite zusammengesetzt, so dass der Quilt nun beidseitig verwendbar ist. Die Farbkombination gefällt mir richtig gut, und besonders schön finde ich den Stoff mit den Peace Zeichen.

Block/Pattern of the Month

June Butterfly

Another month has come and gone, this time it seemed to be really fast since I was away for half of May. I had originally planned a bug for June but when I started playing around with ideas I couldn’t make it work. So I tried a butterfly instead, and that design came together quickly. My first draft used cool blue colours but it didn’t look like summer, so I changed the colours to red, orange and yellow. For quilting I tried to follow the butterfly colours for texture with large flowers as the focus in the centres of the wings. The background is quilted with free motion butterflies and loops. Und wieder ist ein Monat vorbei. Diesmal kam mir die Zeit besonders kurz vor, da ich ja den halben Mai gar nicht hier war. Eigentlich hatte ich für Juni einen Marienkäfer geplant, aber da wollte mir das Design so gar nicht gelingen. Also bin ich dann auf Schmetterling umgeschwenkt, und das zeichnete sich dann schon fast von selbst. Der erste Entwurf war allerdings in kühlen Blautönen, das sah sehr elegant aus, aber nicht wirklich sommerlich, also habe ich die Farbpalette dann auf rot, orange und gelb umgestellt. Beim Quilten habe ich wieder versucht, den Schmetterlingsflügeln Struktur zu geben, und die großen Blumen erschienen dann irgendwie wie von selbst. Der Hintergrund ist mit freihändig gequilteten Schmetterlingen gefüllt. Das Muster gibt es wie immer zum freien Download.

Canadian Flowers

Jane started this amazing quilt back in 1990 and decided it needed to be finished this year in time for Canada’s 150th birthday. The blocks show the flowers of the Canadian provinces/territories and are all hand appliquéd and embroidered. They are surrounded by piping and were then appliquéd to the white background fabric. A huge amount of work went into this project, and I felt honoured that Jane asked me to quilt it for her. She says she enjoys sewing but isn’t really a quilter. Quilter or not, she did a fantastic job, and I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Jane hat diesen wunderbaren Quilt 1990 begonnen, und Kanadas 150. Geburtstag, der in diesem Jahr ansteht, war dann ihre Motivation, das Projekt nun zu vollenden. Die Blöcke zeigen die offiziellen Blumen der kanadischen Provinzen und Territorien und sind alle handappliziert und bestickt. Eingerahmt werden sie von einer Paspel, dann wurden sie auf den weißen Hintergrundstoff appliziert. Eine unglaubliche Arbeit, und ich fühle mich sehr geehrt, dass ich diesen Quilt für Jane quilten durfte. Jane sagt über sich selbst, dass sie zwar gern näht, aber absolut keine Quilterin ist. Quilterin oder nicht, das Ergebnis ist einfach umwerfend, eine sehr beeindruckende Arbeit.
