Daisies

Mary made this cheerful quilt for her granddaughter and brought her along to pick a pantograph. The little girl knew exactly what she liked, one look at the butterflies, and she was sold. The pantograph name is “Butterfly Tango”, it works well with the daisy fabrics. The back is a purple Fireside, once again my camera didn’t capture the right colour, it looks much too blue in the picture.

Daisies

Homecoming

This wall hanging is one of my personal projects that I usually just post on my private sewing blog. But I quilted it on the longarm machine, and since it is so beautiful I decided to show it here as well. If you are a Canadian quilter, then you are probably aware of this pattern, and chances are you bought the kit yourself. It is very popular here, and rightfully so. It is a pattern by BC designer Shania Sunga, and I fell in love with it instantly. In my opinion it’s the most beautiful interpretation of the Canadian flag ever. Adding the Canada geese was just genius. For quilting, I free motion stitched around the edges of all the pieces, taking care of appliqué and quilting at the same time, and then decided that the piece didn’t need much more. I just added some texture and motion to the white background and maple leaves to the red panels.

Kanada feiert in diesem Jahr seinen 150.

Yellow Brick Road

Alida made this Yellow Brick Road quilt top using cozy flannel fabrics. We auditioned a few floral pantographs because of the pansies in the outer border but then decided that an autumn theme would work better with all the leaf fabrics. The pantograph she chose is called “Oak Leaves and Acorns”. It isn’t very visible on the busy fabrics but the backing is a solid cream flannel that shows off the quilting nicely.

Yellow Brick Road

Happy Campers

This is one of the greatest quilts I have ever seen, and I felt very honoured that Kris asked me to quilt it for her. She made it as a gift for her daughter and family. The pattern is by Amy Bradley Designs and comes with many options to customize. I spent a lot of time just looking at all the beautiful details. For quilting I tried to stay away from the appliqué as much as possible and just added texture where needed. The outer border called for cross hatching, and Kris had requested something with leaves for the inner borders, so I drew a continuous maple leaf design and resized it as needed. The loopy design between the two camper blocks picks up the loops in the small inner border. I spent a lot of time on this quilt and I am quite happy with the result.

Happy Campers

What I am working on: Another Scrap Quilt

I am still working on using up my scraps and made another scrap quilt. Since I got bored of the pattern I changed it a little this time. The basic idea of alternating scraps and background fabric is still the same but I only used two small squares instead of four. It still looks very similar but I had to pay attention when I was sewing. For quilting I started out with diagonal lines through the white squares and then added designs to fill the blocks. This quilt will be donated to the Chilliwack Piecemakers Quilting Guild’s “We Care” Program.

Scrap Quilt

Rabbits Haven

Kris made this adorable quilt as a gift using a pattern by Rabbits Haven. The colours are very soft and pretty, and the embroidery is just wonderful. I am probably not patient enough to even attempt something like this. We decided to leave the embroidered blocks unquilted, I just stitched around them in the ditch. The background is filled with free motion flowers and loops.

Rabbits Haven

Jelly Roll Star

Sandra made this star quilt using strips from a Jelly Roll. The black background fabric makes the colours pop, and the piano key border uses up any leftover strips. Sandra chose the pantograph “Ginger Star”, it adds interest to the plain black areas but doesn’t take away from the pieced star. And her backing fabric is just gorgeous. It doesn’t show the quilting at all because it is a very busy print but I love the colours and the design.

Jelly Roll Star

Magic Tiles

Alida started making this Magic Tiles quilt top a long time ago but never had it quilted until now. I recognized some of the fabrics in this quilt from way back… does anyone else remember the “Fossil Fern” line by Pat Campbell? Alida chose the pantograph “Fleur de Swirl”. For some reason my camera doesn’t like to take pictures of dark blue, the backing colour looks horrible and nowhere close to reality. But the quilting shows up nicely, so I am posting the picture anyway.

Magic Tiles

Evening Mist

Kim made this quilt as a gift and used the requested colours of “greige” as she called it… grey/beige/taupe. She chose the “Swirling Feathers” pantograph, and the result is a very elegant quilt. “Greige” is definitely not my favourite colour, it is no secret that I prefer bright and bold colours, but the quiet elegance of the fabrics in combination with the timeless swirls and feathers is very pretty.

Evening Mist

Tumbling Rainbow Blocks

Janet made this amazing quilt top, and I had a lot of fun quilting it for her. She suggested the design for the diamonds but otherwise let me do what I thought would work. Since the blocks are essentially made up of triangles and there was some negative space to fill on the outside I decided to extend the triangles into the border. Everything is stitched in the ditch as well, so it took quite a while to finish this quilt but I love the result and it was definitely worth all the time I spent on it.

Tumbling Rainbow Blocks
