Carol is busy using up her scraps and ended up making not just one but two of these scrap quilts. I like how she framed the blocks and put sashing in between, it organizes the “chaos” of all the different fabrics and draws attention to the individual blocks. Lots of quilting designs work with scrappy quilts, and Carol chose “Ground Cover”, a leaf pattern, for the first quilt and “Ginger Flower” for the second.
This quilt was also made by Maureen, and again I love looking at it, waiting for the secondary pattern to emerge. Maureen is a very accurate piecer, and it is always a pleasure to work on her quilts. The pantograph we chose is called “Melange”, a nice mixture of fairly traditional quilting elements that work well with this quilt.
Maureen made this quilt showcasing a floral fabric. I love how the chain pattern emerges when you look at it long enough. All these straight lines and sharp angles needed a curvy, flowing pattern to finish it, and we went with “Whisper”. It is a basic scroll pattern, and I especially like it because it is not as structured and symmetrical as many of these patterns are. Yes, I know… it’s weird that I say this considering that I am usually all about symmetry 🙂 But I really like how it flows across the quilt in a seemingly random manner.
Karen (a different Karen, not the one who made the Arctic quilt) made this modern Christmas quilt, using a pattern by Zen Chic. There is a lot of negative space which would have been fun to fill with custom quilting but that is very time-consuming, and Karen opted to go with a pantograph instead. We chose “Advent”, a Christmas tree pattern that works well with the pieced trees and fills the background nicely.
Tomato season has arrived, yay! If I could grow only one thing, I would definitely choose tomatoes. Nothing tastes better than the first homegrown tomato of the year. I thought it would probably take a bit longer this year with the cool, wet weather in June but the cherry tomatoes have been going strong for almost three weeks now, and I harvested the first big tomato yesterday. I am also starting to drown in cucumbers, I have blanched and frozen quite a few loads of beans, and my butternut squash looks better than ever. After a very frustrating start, this gardening year turned around quickly, and with the hot weather we are having now, I am really enjoying our drip irrigation, it was so worth it.
This month’s bunny is feeding geese at the pond. It is a fairly simple block, at least by my standards 😀 I really tried to keep the number of pieces down this year but there are a few blocks coming up later where it just wasn’t possible, so enjoy it while you can. The pattern will be available for free download until the end of the month and move to the pattern store when the September block is released.

Karen bought the material for this quilt as a kit on a cruise to Alaska a few years back. Unfortunately the thread colour isn’t visible in the pictures, we chose a variegated black/blue/purple/teal thread and the pattern “Felicity” and decided it was representing the northern lights. It looks so much better in reality but this was the best I could do. What a great souvenir!
I am going to take next week off but the August BOM block will of course be published on Monday.
This sweet little baby quilt was made by Lisa. The back is cozy Fireside, and it shows the quilting nicely. The cheerful floral pattern is called “Flowers Rise Again”.
Here is another quilt made by Angela of Cozy Cottons Quilting. She had all these beautiful rose fabrics, almost too pretty to cut into pieces, and showcased them using this layout. I have a rose quilting pattern but we thought that would be too much, and Angela picked a leaf pattern called “Ground Cover” instead.
Let’s do a bit of Christmas in July with this beautiful quilt made by Angela of Cozy Cotton Quilting. I quilted it with the design “Holly Berries” which looks really nice on the white background and matches some of the Christmas fabrics she used.
Pat made this quilt using a variety of rose fabrics. Her backings are usually a work of art too, she pieces them using leftover fabrics turning them into a second quilt top. It is pretty much impossible to center a quilt on a longarm machine in both directions because the backing is rolled up, and the top ends up where it ends up. Pat knows this and doesn’t care if it is perfectly centered or not. I quilted it with the pattern “Rose Garden”.
