Free Pattern: Summer Squares

Yes, I know that summer is over (at least in this hemisphere) and Christmas is coming. But let’s be honest… if you aren’t already making good progress with your Christmas projects you won’t be getting them done anyway, so why not focus on a cute little quilt for next summer? Maria Wallin of Pink Pony Design added just a touch of appliqué to a mostly pieced quilt, and wow, what a difference this makes. Her instructions include directions for a simple trapunto appliqué method that makes the shapes stand out nicely. She designed the project for Moda Bake Shop, so it calls for precuts but if you don’t mind cutting your own squares and strips, you can easily use any fabrics you like for this cheerful little summer quilt.

Ja, ich weiß, der Sommer ist vorbei (zumindest auf der nördlichen Halbkugel), und Weihnachten steht vor der Tür. Aber wenn wir ehrlich sind, müssen wir doch zugeben, dass es für Weihnachtsprojekte schon fast zu spät ist. Wer jetzt noch nicht gute Fortschritte gemacht hat, dürfte Schwierigkeiten haben, überhaupt noch bis Weihnachten fertig zu werden, also können wir uns doch gleich auf ein Projekt für den nächsten Sommer konzentrieren, oder? Maria Wallin/Pink Pony Design hat einen überwiegend gepatchten Quilt entworfen und nur einige wenige Applikationen hinzugefügt, und das Ergebnis kann sich sehen lassen. Ihre Anleitung (auf Englisch, aber mit Bildern) enthält auch ihre einfache Trapunto-Methode, die die Applikationen hervorhebt. Da sie diesen Quilt für den Moda Bake Shop entworfen hat, verlangt die Anleitung nach Precuts (Charm Pack und Jelly Roll), aber wem es nichts ausmacht, seine Quadrate und Streifen selbst zu schneiden, kann selbstverständlich auch andere Stoffe für diesen netten Sommerquilt verwenden.

What I am working on: Rose Wreath

I am really kicking myself for giving away my Rose Garden quilt… I am pleading temporary insanity. I made it a long time ago and didn’t remember how much work had gone into those small pieces. I finished cutting and ironing the centre block in the meantime but won’t start stitching around the pieces until I have all the designs fused and ready. This is the first time that I have ever attempted to make one of my designs more than once, and the result will be well worth the trouble.

Ich frage mich immer wieder, warum ich meinen Rosengarten Quilt eigentlich verschenkt habe… ich muss vorübergehend unzurechnungsfähig gewesen sein. Es ist über zehn Jahre her, dass ich ihn gemacht habe, und ich konnte mich nicht mehr daran erinnern, wieviel Arbeit ich mit all den kleinen Teilen hatte. Mittlerweile habe ich den Mittelblock fertig zugeschnitten und aufgebügelt. Mit dem Nähen um die Teile herum fange ich aber erst an, wenn alles aufgebügelt ist. Dies ist das erste Mal, dass ich einen meiner Entwürfe zum zweiten Mal nähe, und ich denke, das Endergebnis wird die ganze Mühe wert sein.

Free Pattern: I Fall To Pieces

With the purchase of my APQS Millie came a free subscription of Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting Magazine. I love appliqué and usually prefer quilts with at least a little appliqué but I can’t resist a pretty pieced quilt either. In the July/August 2016 issue of the magazine there is a free project that I find absolutely stunning. The quilt is called “I Fall To Pieces” and was designed by Angie Milligan. The good news is that it is much easier to make than it looks. The pinwheel block is made in three different colourways with all the same fabrics in different places, and the layout of the blocks creates a stunning effect.

And while many people might tolerate the use of their pictures, especially if they are used to promote their products, this is still a violation of copyright if you don’t get permission first. Mit dem Kauf meiner APQS Millie kam auch ein Jahresabonnement für Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting Magazine. Normalerweise bin ich ja ein Fan von Applikationen und bevorzuge Quilts, die zumindest ein paar kleine Applikationen enthalten, aber manche “nur” gepatchten Quilts sind auch solche Hingucker, dass ich ihnen nicht widerstehen kann. In der Juli/August 2016 Ausgabe ist ein freies Muster enthalten, das mir super gut gefällt. Der Quilt heißt “I Fall To Pieces” und wurde entworfen von Angie Milligan. Und er ist einfacher zu nähen als es aussieht. Der Pinwheel Block ist immer der gleiche, nur in drei verschiedenen Farbvarianten. Auch die verwendeten Stoffe sind immer gleich, sie finden sich nur an unterschiedlichen Stellen im Block wieder. Durch geschicktes Positionieren der unterschiedlichen Blöcke entsteht ein toller Effekt.

Anmerkung: Heutzutage lädt jeder Kopien aller möglichen Photos auf seine Website. What I am working on: Star Border

With quilting, working on the website and writing blog posts I sometimes wonder if I will ever find the time to work on my patterns. I have a bunch of them written, they “just” need a final edit. And I need samples for some of them. Many were written a long time ago, and the finished quilts were given away in the meantime. Yes, I know, not the best planning on my part. But I never really planned to do anything with them. Right now I am working on making another sample of my favourite quilt ever that I designed. It has a lot of appliqué but so far I have only managed to sew the pieced inner border.

Ich bin im Moment so sehr mit Quilten, der Website und den Blog Posts beschäftigt, dass ich mich manchmal frage, ob ich jemals dazu kommen werde, an meinen Patterns zu arbeiten. Ich habe eine ganze Menge schon lange fertig, ihnen fehlt “nur” noch der letzte Schliff. Und ich brauche Muster für einige von ihnen. Die meisten habe ich schon vor langer Zeit geschrieben und die Musterquilts in der Zwischenzeit verschenkt. Schlechte Planung, ich weiß, aber ich hatte ja nie wirklich geplant, daraus etwas zu machen. Daher arbeite ich im Moment an einem Musterquilt für mein Lieblingspattern, das gefällt mir immer noch am besten von allen. Es hat eine Menge Applikationen, aber bisher habe ich nur den gepatchten inneren Sternenrand zusammengesetzt.

Free Pattern: Hope Chest Quilt

When I first started quilting I didn’t like scrap quilts at all. Don’t ask me why, it might just have been my OCD kicking in. I preferred order and symmetry, and scrap quilts were just too wild for my taste. And of course I didn’t have the stash of scraps that I would have needed. That certainly has changed, and while I still like order and symmetry I have come to like a certain type of scrap quilts very much. Too many different fabrics next to each other still don’t appeal to me but colourful scraps put together with a background colour are a different story. You might have seen my three scrap quilts in white, black and blue. This pattern is still my favourite to use up leftovers but I am always on the lookout for others that I can use. And in the age of Facebook and Pinterest I am probably saving more patterns than I can ever make.

Als ich mit dem Quilten angefangen habe, konnten mich Scrap Quilts nicht wirklich begeistern. Ich weiß gar nicht so genau warum, wahrscheinlich war es meine Zwanghaftigkeit. Ich wollte Symmetrie und Ordnung in meinen Quilts, und Scrap Quilts waren mir zu wild und durcheinander. Und natürlich fehlten mir auch die notwendigen Reste für solche Quilts. Das hat sich inzwischen geändert, und obwohl ich Symmetrie und Ordnung immer noch gern mag, auch in Quilts, habe ich doch in der Zwischenzeit Gefallen an einer bestimmten Art von Scrap Quilts gefunden. Zuviele bunte Stoffe durcheinander sprechen mich immer noch nicht an, aber wenn die Reste mit einer eindeutigen Hintergrundfarbe kombiniert werden, dann sieht das doch gleich viel besser aus. Ich denke da an meine drei Scrap Quilts in schwarz, weiß und dunkelblau. Dieses Muster gefällt mir immer noch sehr gut für meine Reste, aber ich halte ständig die Augen offen, ob mir noch etwas anderes gefällt. Und im Zeitalter von Facebook und Pinterest speichere ich vermutlich mehr Anleitungen, als ich jemals nähen kann.

Ich habe begonnen, Blöcke für einen Quilt zu nähen, der Hope Chest heißt. Eigentlich ist es, glaube ich, gar nicht der Quilt, der Hope Chest heißt, sondern die Stoffserie, die für den Quilt verwendet wurde. Die Anleitung ist ein freies Muster der Designerin Erin Turner/Penny Rose Fabrics und kann von der Riley Blake Designs Website heruntergeladen werden (auf Englisch und in Inch). Man braucht für einen Block je zwei 5″ große Quadrate eines Hintergrund- und eines Akzentstoffs. Damit qualifiziert sich der Quilt vermutlich gar nicht mehr als Scrap Quilt… jedenfalls nicht für die ganz kleinen Reste. Aber das Muster gefällt mir gut und ist einfach zu nähen, es ist ein Disappearing Four Patch. Bisher habe ich nur vier Blöcke fertig, aber man kann bereits das sekundäre Muster erahnen, das sich beim Zusammennähen ergeben wird.

In an effort to reduce my leftovers I have started to make blocks for a quilt that is called “Hope Chest”. Actually I am not sure if that really is the name of the quilt. It is the name of the fabric line that was used to make the quilt. It is a free project by designer Erin Turner for Penny Rose Fabrics and can be downloaded from the Riley Blake Designs website. You need two 5″ squares each of a feature fabric and a background fabric for one block, so technically it is not really a scrap quilt… at least not for very small scraps. But the pattern looks very nice and is easy to sew, it is a disappearing four patch. I have only finished four blocks so far but the secondary pattern is already visible.

Heart Pillow Project

Another Load Of Pillows

Yes, I realize that this seems to be the Heart Pillow Project blog, and you are probably all tired of my heart pillow posts. And I promise I will stop posting every single pillow I receive and just give occasional updates. But today I received fifteen pillows from a single person, another square dancer. Beverly A. told me she has fifteen more in progress and will bring them in as soon as they are finished. She is the most prolific heart pillow seamstress so far and certainly deserves to be recognized here. And she did some beautiful work. Her first fifteen pillows bring us to almost 80, this means we are already past the halfway mark for a year’s supply!

Mir ist durchaus bewusst, dass sich das hier zum Herzkissenprojekt-Blog entwickelt hat und vermutlich niemand mehr meine ständigen Updates lesen will. Und ich verspreche, dass ich aufhöre, jedes einzelne Kissen zu posten, ich werde nur noch ab und zu darüber berichten. Aber heute habe ich weitere fünfzehn Kissen bekommen, die alle von der gleichen Person genäht wurden. Beverly A. ist Mitglied in unserem Square Dance Club, und sie hat mir bei der Übergabe gesagt, dass sie noch fünfzehn weitere Kissen in Arbeit hat und diese mitbringen wird, sobald sie fertig sind. Damit hat sie mit Abstand die meisten Kissen für die Aktion genäht und verdient, hier einzeln erwähnt zu werden mit all den schönen Herzen. Ihre ersten fünfzehn Kissen machen die 80 fast voll, und wir haben damit schon mehr als den halben Jahresbedarf gesammelt.

Quilt Show

PieceMaking in the Valley Quilt Show

Every year in October, one of the two quilting guilds in Chilliwack hosts a quilt show. This year it was the Chilliwack Piecemakers Quilting Guild. I only joined in September and didn’t have a quilt in the show but I helped with some last minute organizational stuff like checking in the show quilts yesterday. We were busy outside Chilliwack all weekend but I found some time this morning to go and actually look at the quilts. There were lots of wonderful quilts in the show this year, and I didn’t even try to decide which one was my favourite.

Im Oktober organisiert immer eine der beiden Quiltgilden in Chillwack eine Quiltshow. In diesem Jahr war es die Chilliwack Piecemakers Quilting Guild, das ist die Abendgilde, der ich erst im September beigetreten bin. Daher hatte ich diesmal keinen Quilt in der Show, aber ich habe zumindest bei der Organisation geholfen, z.B. war ich gestern morgen damit beschäftigt, die vielen Quilts für die Show in Empfang zu nehmen und zu organisieren. Da wir aber mal wieder das ganze Wochenende unterwegs waren, hatte ich nicht viel Zeit, mich dort zu engagieren, aber heute morgen hatte ich dann doch Gelegenheit, mir die Show tatsächlich anzusehen. In diesem Jahr waren so viele Quilts in der Show, die mir gut gefielen, dass ich nicht mal versucht habe zu entscheiden, welcher mir am allerbesten gefällt.

Heart Pillow Project

The First Delivery

Today I dropped off the first load of heart pillows at the surgeon’s office. At their request I only took twenty-six pillows in, they had cleared a few shelves but were not sure how many pillows they could accommodate. I had wrapped each pillow with a clear plastic bag and added a little note with an explanation what the pillow was for and also washing and drying instructions. It was wonderful to watch the two ladies digging through the bags, oohing and aahing over the pillows and the different fabric choices. When they had placed all the pillows on the shelves it turned out that there was room to fit more, so I will drop off another load next week. This project is off to a good start, and I am very grateful for all the support.

Heute habe ich die erste Ladung Herzkissen beim Chirurgen abgeliefert. Sie hatten zunächst nur um eine kleine Menge gebeten, da sie sich nicht sicher waren, wieviele sie unterbringen konnten, daher packte ich sechsundzwanzig ein. Ich hatte alle einzeln in durchsichtige Tüten verpackt und einen kleinen Zettel hinzugefügt, der den Sinn und Zweck des Kissens erklärt und auch eine Waschanleitung beinhaltet. Die beiden Damen in der Praxis haben dann die Tüten ausgepackt, und ihre Begeisterung über die vielen verschiedenen Kissen hat mich sehr gefreut. Nachdem alles im Regal verstaut war, stellte sich heraus, dass noch Platz übrig war, also werde ich nächste Woche noch mehr Herzkissen abliefern. Der Anfang ist gemacht, und ich freue mich sehr, dass ich soviel Unterstützung gefunden habe.

Heart Pillow Project

Much Better Than Expected

I had secretly hoped for a good turnout of heart pillows at the guild meeting but it was even better than expected. We put an extra table up front where everyone could drop off their pillows, and the pile kept growing and growing. I went home with another forty-eight pillows. Forty-eight! Thank you so much to all the amazing ladies that contributed one or more. I collected more than one third of a year’s supply in just one month, and I haven’t even talked to the Piecemakers Quilting Guild yet, I am scheduled to speak there tomorrow. As soon as I got home I called the surgeon’s office, and the receptionist was as happy as I am with the result. I will drop in this Thursday with the first load of pillows.

Ich hatte ja heimlich auf ein gutes Ergebnis gehofft, aber die Gilde hat dann meine Erwartungen bei weitem übertroffen. Wir hatten vorn einen Extra-Tisch für die Herzkissen aufgestellt, und der Stapel wuchs und wuchs kontinuierlich. Ich konnte achtundvierzig weitere Kissen mit nach Hause nehmen. Achtundvierzig! Mein Dank geht an alle, die ein oder mehrere Kissen genäht haben. Damit habe ich innerhalb eines Monats mehr als ein Drittel des Jahresbedarfs gesammelt, und dabei habe ich das Projekt noch nicht mal bei der Piecemakers Quilting Guild vorgestellt, das mache ich morgen abend. Als ich zu Hause war, habe ich gleich beim Büro des Chirurgen angerufen, und die Sprechstundenhilfe hat sich genauso gefreut wie ich. Am Donnerstag werde ich hinfahren und die erste Lieferung Herzkissen abgeben.

Heart Pillow Project

More Heart Pillows

The October meeting of the Chilliwack Quilters Guild is tomorrow, and I am pretty excited about the heart pillow project. Tonight I received another three heart pillows, this time from a lady who is not a guild member but a square dancer. I am also a member of the Chilliwack Rhythm Reelers, a square and round dance club. Many of the ladies make their own outfits, so I thought it would be a good idea to introduce them to the project. The night I talked about the heart pillows was Bev’s first time ever at our club, and she was the first to come forward and get a pattern and also the first to actually make a pillow… or even three in this case. Her fabric choices are just adorable. Everybody loves Mickey Mouse, right?

Morgen findet das Oktobertreffen der Chilliwack Quilters Guild statt, und ich bin schon ganz gespannt, wie das Herzkissenprojekt angenommen wurde. Heute abend jedoch wurde ich mit drei weiteren Kissen überrascht. Diese kamen nicht von einem Gildemitglied, sondern von unserem Square und Round Dance Club, den Chilliwack Rhythm Reelers. Da dort viele Damen ihre Outfits selbst nähen, dachte ich, es wäre eine gute Idee, das Projekt dort auch vorzustellen. An dem Abend, als ich darüber geredet habe, war Bev das erste Mal bei uns, und sie war die erste, die kam und sich ein Pattern holte, und sie ist auch die erste, die ein Kissen (oder in diesem Fall sogar drei) fertiggestellt hat. Sie hat schöne Stoffe ausgewählt… Mickey Mouse ist doch nie verkehrt, oder?
